Can you play Breath of the Wild on PS5? Not as an official, supported release. Nintendo lists the game for Nintendo Switch and says it is supported on Nintendo Switch 2; Sony’s PS5 compatibility guidance covers PS4 games, not Nintendo Switch games. A GamesRadar report dated October 5, 2026 described an unofficial demonstration using emulation on a jailbroken PS5, but that does not make the game compatible with a standard PS5.
Does Breath of the Wild work on PS5 without jailbreaking?
No official PS5 version is listed by Nintendo, and Sony does not identify Nintendo Switch games as PS5-compatible. Sony’s guidance says the overwhelming majority of PS4 games can be played on PS5; it is not a general promise that games from other consoles will run on the system. Nintendo lists Breath of the Wild for Nintendo Switch, while Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility page addresses PS4 titles.

That means a regular PS5 cannot play the game through an official disc, download, or compatibility feature. Owning the Nintendo Switch version does not turn it into a PS5 game or provide a PS5 upgrade.

What was the jailbroken-PS5 emulation demonstration?
GamesRadar reported on October 5, 2026 that Breath of the Wild had been demonstrated running through emulation on a jailbroken PS5. That is a report about an unofficial setup—not an announced PS5 release, normal PS5 compatibility, or an endorsed way to play the game. The report does not establish that the method is reliable, available to ordinary PS5 owners, or lawful in every jurisdiction. GamesRadar’s report

- Discover Hyrule as never before: by making your own path, choices, and consequences
- Ingenuity is the key to survival: find multiple solutions to tons of dynamic puzzles
- Surprises hide around every corner: scavenge weapons, armor, plants, animals, and more
- Live off the land: find weapons and armor, cook food, and brew elixirs
- Utilize special technology: the in-game Sheikah Slate controls, objects and enemies in fun ways
Keep three questions separate: whether the platform officially supports the game, whether a particular modified setup works in practice, and whether a person’s actions are lawful where they live. Nintendo and Sony’s official platform information answers the first question; the demonstration report speaks only to a specific unofficial setup; neither settles every legal question.
Are PS5 emulation and jailbreaking legal?
There is no single answer here that applies to every country, console modification, game copy, and use. Company terms and support pages are relevant, but they are not a universal court ruling about every emulator or every user’s conduct.

Nintendo’s position on emulators and game copies
Nintendo’s US support FAQ says downloading and uploading pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal. It also says some unauthorized emulators circumvent security measures, while describing emulator software generally as software that lets software run on a device it was not originally made for. Those are Nintendo’s statements; they should not be read as a ruling that all emulator software is unlawful in every circumstance. Nintendo’s US FAQ on emulators and pirated games

Sony’s PS5 software terms
Sony’s US PS5 system software license prohibits use of unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit, or modified hardware or software with the system software. It also restricts tools that bypass PS5 encryption, security, or authentication, and using system software to make a PS5 accept unauthorized, illegal, or pirated software or hardware. Sony says these restrictions are construed to the greatest extent permitted by the user’s jurisdiction. This is the US agreement; applicable terms and law may differ by region.
