Yes—but only after adding Sony’s separately sold PlayStation 5 Disc Drive (model CFI-ZDD1). The PS5 Pro itself has no optical drive. With the compatible drive attached, it can play supported physical PS4 game discs and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD movies. Without the drive, the console is limited to digital games and streaming or downloaded video.
The short answer: PS5 Pro needs an add-on drive
Unlike a disc-equipped PlayStation 5, the PS5 Pro is sold without an optical drive. There is no slot hidden behind a removable panel and no way to read a PS4 game disc or movie disc until a compatible drive is installed.

The required accessory is the PlayStation 5 Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1. Sony sells it separately for use with the PS5 Pro. Once it is physically attached and paired with the console, the drive provides the optical-disc functions that the Pro hardware does not include on its own.
This distinction matters when choosing between a digital purchase and a physical copy. A PS5 Pro bought without the drive can still download and run digital PS5 and PS4 games, but it cannot authenticate a PS4 disc, install from a disc, or play a Blu-ray or DVD. Adding CFI-ZDD1 turns the same console into a system that accepts supported game discs and the principal home-video disc formats.

Which discs work with PS5 Pro?
| Disc type | PS5 Pro by itself | PS5 Pro with CFI-ZDD1 | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 physical game disc | Not supported | Supported when the individual PS4 game is compatible | Sony lists a small number of PS4 titles that are not compatible with PS5 consoles. |
| PS5 physical game disc | Not supported | Supported | The drive is designed for PS5 physical discs as well as supported PS4 discs. |
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movie | Not supported | Supported | Playback requires the attached disc drive. |
| Standard Blu-ray movie | Not supported | Supported | Playback requires the attached disc drive. |
| DVD movie | Not supported | Supported | Playback requires the attached disc drive. |
The table describes the console’s disc capability, not a guarantee that every game disc will run. Game compatibility is determined title by title, while the movie formats are supported by the drive-equipped console.
Can you use PS4 game discs?
Yes, provided three conditions are met: the PS5 Pro has the CFI-ZDD1 drive installed, the PS4 title is among the supported games, and the disc is usable by the console. Sony says that more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5 Pro. That figure describes the broad PS4 library, not an assurance that every release works.
How compatibility affects a physical copy
A physical PS4 disc does not bypass the compatibility list. If Sony identifies a particular PS4 game as incompatible with PS5 consoles, inserting its disc into a PS5 Pro will not make it playable. Before buying a used disc or relying on a favorite older title, check that game’s current PlayStation compatibility information.

Some PS4 functions may not be available when a game runs on PS5 hardware. Sony warns that compatibility can involve feature differences, so “playable” should not be read as “identical to the original PS4 experience.” The supported-game statement also does not promise that every peripheral, mode or legacy feature behaves exactly as it did on PS4.
What the drive changes
The drive supplies the physical-disc reader and lets the console verify a disc-based game license. It does not expand the list of compatible PS4 software. If a title is supported, the drive makes its physical edition usable; if a title is excluded, purchasing the accessory will not change that status.
Can PS5 Pro play Blu-ray movies?
With CFI-ZDD1 attached, the PS5 Pro can play three relevant movie-disc categories:

- 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs
- Standard Blu-ray Discs
- DVDs
Sony describes the disc-equipped PS5 platform as supporting video playback from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, ordinary Blu-ray and DVD media. Therefore, a PS5 Pro with the correct drive can serve as a 4K Blu-ray player as well as a game console. The base Pro unit, without the accessory, cannot read any of those discs.
What “4K Blu-ray support” means here
The supported format is 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, the physical-disc standard marketed for 4K movie releases. This is separate from streaming a 4K movie through an app and separate from a standard Blu-ray disc. You need the disc drive and the corresponding physical disc format for disc playback.
3D Blu-ray limitation
Sony states that 3D stereoscopic output is not supported. A 3D-capable disc or television therefore does not turn the PS5 Pro into a 3D stereoscopic player. The console can handle the listed 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD formats, but 3D stereoscopic output remains a stated limitation.

How to add the disc drive to PS5 Pro
The accessory must be installed on the console and paired before you expect disc playback to work. Use the drive’s installation instructions and keep the console’s software current.
- Obtain the correct model. Choose the PlayStation 5 Disc Drive identified as CFI-ZDD1. Do not assume that an unrelated optical accessory or a drive intended for another device will work.
- Turn off and prepare the PS5 Pro. Shut the console down completely, disconnect it as directed by Sony’s hardware instructions, and place it on a stable surface before removing or fitting any cover panel.
- Attach the drive. Follow the CFI-ZDD1 installation directions to fit the drive to the PS5 Pro. The drive is a physical hardware attachment; downloading software alone cannot add disc-reading capability.
- Connect the console to the internet for initial pairing. Sony advises that an internet connection may be required when the drive is first paired with the console. This is an initial setup requirement, not evidence that every later movie session needs an active connection.
- Install current system software. Update the PS5 Pro if it requests a system-software update during setup. Sony recommends current software for the drive and console to work correctly.
- Test with the disc you intend to use. Insert a supported PS4 game disc, PS5 game disc or movie disc. If a game does not start, confirm the title’s compatibility rather than assuming the drive is defective.
The first pairing is the step most likely to surprise owners who expected a purely offline accessory. Plan to connect the console before taking it somewhere without internet access, especially if you want to use the drive at a second location.

Digital games and apps still work
Removing the disc requirement does not make the PS5 Pro unusable. Digital games, downloaded PS4 titles, downloaded PS5 titles and streaming applications remain available through the console’s online software ecosystem. The trade-off is ownership format: a drive-free system cannot use a physical disc as the game license or movie source.

Physical collections require the accessory
If your PS4 library is mostly discs, or you own a shelf of Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray or DVD movies, the separate drive is not optional. Buying the console alone leaves those discs unreadable. The accessory is also relevant to anyone who buys pre-owned physical games or wants to lend and borrow discs rather than purchase digital licenses.
The drive does not remove software restrictions
CFI-ZDD1 is a hardware enabler, not a compatibility patch. It cannot make an unsupported PS4 game run, restore PS4-only functionality, or add 3D stereoscopic output. Those limitations come from the PS5 platform and Sony’s software support, not from the absence of the accessory.
Choosing between the two PS5 Pro setups
| Setup | Best for | Disc capability | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Pro without a drive | Owners who buy games digitally and stream or download video | No physical games or movie discs | Existing PS4, Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray and DVD collections cannot be used directly. |
| PS5 Pro with PlayStation 5 Disc Drive (CFI-ZDD1) | Players with PS4 or PS5 discs and movie collections | Supported PS4 and PS5 game discs; 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD | Requires a separate accessory, installation, initial pairing and current system software. |
Sony’s current price and retail availability for CFI-ZDD1 are not stated in the compatibility information summarized here, so check the accessory listing for your region before budgeting. Compatibility can also vary by market and stock conditions; verify that the listing explicitly identifies PS5 Pro support.

Troubleshooting disc problems
The PS5 Pro does not recognize any disc
- Confirm that the CFI-ZDD1 drive is fully attached and that the console completed its initial pairing.
- Connect the console to the internet if pairing has not yet occurred.
- Install the latest available system software, as Sony recommends current software for setup and operation.
- Test another known-supported disc to separate a drive or installation issue from a problem with one title.
A PS4 disc is rejected or the game will not start
- Check whether that exact PS4 game is supported on PS5. Sony’s more-than-8,500-game figure includes a small number of exclusions.
- Do not treat the presence of a disc drive as proof that every PS4 release is compatible.
- Remember that some PS4 functionality may be absent on PS5 even for a supported game.
A movie disc plays but a 3D feature is unavailable
This is expected under Sony’s stated limitation: 3D stereoscopic output is not supported. The drive’s support for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD does not include 3D stereoscopic playback.
Practical buying checklist
- Choose the PS5 Pro with the expectation that its base configuration is digital-only for games and movies.
- Add the PlayStation 5 Disc Drive (CFI-ZDD1) if you need any physical media.
- Confirm that your important PS4 games appear on Sony’s supported list before buying discs specifically for the Pro.
- Allow time for internet-based initial pairing and a system-software update.
- For movies, distinguish 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray from standard Blu-ray and DVD; all three are supported once the drive is installed.
- Do not buy the accessory expecting 3D stereoscopic output or restoration of every PS4-era feature.
Bottom line for PS4 and Blu-ray owners
The PS5 Pro can replace a disc-equipped PS4 or Blu-ray player only after you add Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive. That combination supports supported physical PS4 games, PS5 discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD. The standalone PS5 Pro has no optical drive, and the accessory cannot override unsupported PS4 titles, missing legacy functions or the lack of 3D stereoscopic output.
