Can You Play BioShock Co‑Op on Steam Deck? What Each Edition Supports

No. BioShock and BioShock Remastered are single-player games on Steam Deck. BioShock 2 has a separate multiplayer mode, but its official description does not offer cooperative story-campaign play. Steam Deck can connect extra controllers and supports Remote Play Together for compatible games, yet those features cannot create a co-op mode that the BioShock game itself does not provide.

The short answer by game

Edition Steam release Modes listed by Steam Steam Deck information What two players can do
BioShock August 21, 2007 Single-player Playable No in-game co-op; one person plays the campaign.
BioShock Remastered September 15, 2016 Single-player; Full Controller Support Playable No in-game co-op; one person plays the campaign.
BioShock 2 February 9, 2010 Single-player and Multi-player A Deck rating is not stated in the compatibility details summarized here. Its multiplayer is a separate Rapture civil-war experience, not cooperative campaign play.

The important distinction is between a game being marked Multi-player and having a cooperative mode. BioShock 2 is the only entry in this group whose Steam listing identifies multiplayer at all, and the description presents that mode as its own experience with progression, maps and competitive modes. It does not describe two players advancing through the single-player story together.

What Steam Deck’s compatibility labels mean

Steam marks both the 2007 BioShock and the 2016 Remastered edition as Playable on Steam Deck. Valve uses that label for games that work but may require some manual configuration. The stronger Verified label means the game works out of the box. Playable is therefore a compatibility qualification, not a multiplayer promise and not a statement that every control or display setting is automatic.

A Playable badge can cover small setup tasks such as selecting a control layout, confirming an on-screen keyboard action or changing a graphics option. It does not change the feature list on the game’s Steam page. If the listing says Single-player, Deck compatibility lets you run that single-player game; it does not add local co-op, split-screen or an additional campaign character.

BioShock (2007): a solo campaign on Deck

The original BioShock release is listed by Steam as Single-player and rated Playable for Steam Deck. Its campaign is designed for one player controlling the protagonist in Rapture. Connecting a second gamepad can give another person a way to watch or take turns, but there is no second-player slot for the campaign.

If your library contains the original Windows release, select it in the Deck’s Library and use the game’s compatibility information as a guide. Because the rating is Playable rather than Verified, allow time for a one-time adjustment if the first launch presents a prompt or a control assignment that is not automatically mapped. That is a setup issue, not a hidden co-op option.

BioShock Remastered: controller-friendly, still single-player

BioShock Remastered, released September 15, 2016, is also marked Playable on Steam Deck. Its Steam feature list explicitly includes Single-player and Full Controller Support. Those entries make it the most straightforward choice for someone who wants to play the campaign with the Deck’s built-in controls or a supported gamepad, but the remaster does not turn the story into a two-player game.

Remastering improves presentation and input support; it does not add a cooperative campaign. A second controller therefore has the same result as with the original: it may be connected to the Deck, but the game has no campaign mode in which to assign that controller to another player.

BioShock 2: multiplayer is not the same as co-op

BioShock 2’s Steam listing contains both Single-player and Multi-player. The description says the multiplayer experience is set during Rapture’s civil war and refers to progression, maps and competitive modes. It describes a distinct online component rather than a way for two people to complete BioShock 2’s story campaign together.

That distinction answers the common question “Does BioShock 2 have co-op or just multiplayer?” It has multiplayer in the broad sense, but the available description does not identify cooperative campaign play. Do not infer co-op from the presence of a multiplayer tab, a player-count field or the word “multiplayer” in a store listing. Look for an explicit co-op, campaign co-op or shared-story mode; BioShock 2’s description does not make that claim.

The compatibility facts available for this comparison do not state a Steam Deck rating or controller-support label for BioShock 2. If you plan to install it, check the current Steam page on your own account for the latest Deck badge and any launch notes. Whatever that badge says, it cannot change the absence of an advertised cooperative story mode.

Why a second controller cannot add co-op

Steam Deck supports local multiplayer hardware and can pair controllers over Bluetooth or USB. Valve also documents Remote Play Together, which lets a host share a compatible game’s session with people using other Steam Decks or computers. These are platform capabilities. The game still has to expose a local or remote multiplayer mode for them to do anything.

In a single-player BioShock campaign, the game creates one player profile, one camera and one set of story progression. A second controller has no character, HUD or input slot to control. Steam can recognize the device while the game continues to listen only to Player 1. Remote Play Together works the same way: it streams or shares the host’s game session, but it cannot rewrite the game’s executable to create a second protagonist.

How to install and play the campaign on Steam Deck

  1. Open your Library. Switch to the BioShock edition you own and open its game page.
  2. Install the game. Choose the internal drive or a compatible microSD card, then wait for the download and installation to finish.
  3. Review compatibility information. On the game’s page, open the section that shows its Steam Deck rating. For BioShock and BioShock Remastered, expect the Playable label rather than Verified.
  4. Launch with the built-in controls first. This establishes whether the default layout works before you add another device. If Steam asks you to confirm a prompt or choose a layout, complete that one-time setup.
  5. Start a new game or load a save. The available story mode is single-player, so the Deck’s built-in controls are sufficient for the campaign.
  6. Use offline mode only after preparation. Install and launch the game while connected when possible, then test offline play before travelling. Valve says ordinary single-player play can generally work offline after installation, but individual games may impose their own requirements.

You do not need a second Steam account, a second controller or Remote Play Together to play either single-player BioShock release. Those additions are relevant only when a game supplies a multiplayer mode that can use them.

Can two people play on one Steam Deck?

Two people can physically share one Deck, but BioShock does not provide a simultaneous two-player campaign. You can connect another controller and take turns, use it for menu navigation or let a second person watch the host’s run. The game will still treat the session as one-player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a quick hardware check, pair the second controller from the Deck’s Bluetooth settings or connect it by USB, then open the game’s controller-layout screen. If both devices appear in Steam but only one affects the game, that is expected for a single-player title. Reassigning buttons cannot create a Player 2 slot.

Do not confuse local controller support with split-screen. “Full Controller Support” on the Remastered listing means the advertised controls can be used without relying on a keyboard and mouse; it does not mean that two complete control sets are supported.

Can Remote Play Together add BioShock co-op?

No. Remote Play Together can share a game that already has a compatible local multiplayer mode. Valve describes it as a way to connect controllers or let other players use another Steam Deck or computer in supported games. It is a transport and input-sharing feature, not a universal multiplayer patch.

If you invite someone to a BioShock session through Remote Play Together, the guest can see the host’s streamed game and may be able to send input, subject to the game’s controls. Because BioShock and BioShock Remastered expose only single-player campaigns, there is no separate guest character for that input to control. BioShock 2’s listed multiplayer is separate from its story and is not described as a shared campaign.

Internet, offline play and multiplayer requirements

Valve states that online multiplayer requires an internet connection. That requirement applies to a genuine online multiplayer session, such as the separate mode advertised for BioShock 2, not to the mere act of connecting a controller locally.

For the single-player releases, download the game and complete any first-launch checks while online. Afterward, ordinary single-player play can generally be attempted offline, although game-specific authentication or launcher requirements can change that behavior. If offline launch fails, reconnect to the internet, open the game once, allow Steam to synchronize the installation, and test offline mode again before relying on it during travel.

Troubleshooting a Playable BioShock installation

A Playable rating means the game is expected to work with possible manual intervention. Use this checklist when the campaign does not start or controls feel wrong:

  • Check the badge and notes. Reopen the game’s Steam Deck compatibility panel and read any current warnings instead of assuming Playable means identical to Verified.
  • Confirm the active control layout. Make sure the built-in Deck controls or your chosen gamepad are assigned to the game, not left on a desktop or generic layout.
  • Complete first-launch prompts. Some Playable games require a one-time confirmation with the touchscreen, a controller button or the on-screen keyboard.
  • Test with one controller. Disconnect the extra pad while diagnosing. A second device can change which controller Steam treats as Player 1, but it cannot provide co-op.
  • Restart after changing settings. Close the game fully, apply the new layout or display choice, and launch again so the title can read the updated configuration.
  • Verify the installation. If files are missing or a saved launch configuration is damaged, use Steam’s installed-game properties to verify the files before trying more invasive changes.
  • Separate network problems from game problems. A failed online connection matters to multiplayer; it should not be interpreted as evidence that the single-player campaign requires a second player.

Which BioShock edition should a Deck owner choose?

Your priority Most relevant option Reason
Play the original campaign with the fewest feature assumptions BioShock (2007) Steam lists it as Single-player and Playable.
Use built-in or gamepad controls with an explicit support label BioShock Remastered Steam lists Single-player, Full Controller Support and Playable Deck compatibility.
Try a separate multiplayer component BioShock 2 Steam lists Multi-player as well as Single-player, but describes it as a separate civil-war experience rather than campaign co-op.
Play the story with a friend controlling a second character None of these editions No listed edition provides an advertised cooperative campaign.

If your purchase decision depends specifically on co-op, do not buy any of these editions expecting two-player story progression. Choose between the original and Remastered editions based on presentation and controller-support priorities, or choose BioShock 2 only if its separate multiplayer offering is what you want and the current Steam listing meets your Deck requirements.

What to expect when someone says “BioShock multiplayer on Steam Deck”

That phrase can refer to three different things: the single-player campaigns running on a portable PC; BioShock 2’s distinct multiplayer component; or a platform feature such as Remote Play Together. Only the second is an in-game multiplayer mode, and the available description frames it as separate from the story. The first is the normal way to play BioShock on Deck, while the third cannot supply a missing co-op design.

The practical test is simple: open the exact edition’s Steam feature list and look for an explicit cooperative mode. The listings summarized here identify Single-player for BioShock and BioShock Remastered, and Single-player plus Multi-player for BioShock 2. None advertises cooperative campaign play, so a second person cannot join the Rapture story as an additional player on one Deck or through Remote Play Together.
