Yes, but only when the individual game supports remote input. Apple TV 4K lets you play Apple Arcade titles with the Siri Remote or a game controller, yet the remote is not a universal gamepad. Some games make a controller optional, while others require one before they can be played.
What the Siri Remote can do in Apple Arcade
Apple describes Apple TV 4K Arcade play as supporting either the remote or a game controller. That statement means the Siri Remote is a valid input device for compatible titles; it does not mean every game maps its controls to the remote.

Each Apple Arcade game has its own control requirements. A simple game may work entirely with the remote’s available buttons and directional input, while a title designed around multiple sticks, triggers or other gamepad controls may require a separate controller. The deciding factor is the game’s listing, not the fact that your Apple TV is a 4K model.

How to tell whether a game supports the remote
Check the game’s product page before downloading it. Apple places a controller indicator on each game page to show whether a controller is optional or required. This is the most reliable way to decide what you need because support is set per title and can differ throughout the catalog.
- Open the Arcade app on Apple TV 4K.
- Select the game you are considering.
- Inspect the controller indicator on the game’s page. An optional designation means the game can be played without a dedicated gamepad; a required designation means you must connect one.
- Read the rest of the listing for any hardware or software compatibility notes shown for that title.
- Download only after checking the requirement. Apple TV 4K requires an Apple Arcade subscription to download Arcade games.
Do not infer compatibility from a game’s genre, screenshots or whether another game works with the remote. Two games that look similar can use different input schemes, so the indicator on the specific listing should control your decision.
Playing a remote-compatible game
If the listing identifies the controller as optional, you can start with the Siri Remote already paired to Apple TV 4K. Open the game from the Arcade app and use the remote’s directional and selection controls as the game describes them. The exact layout is determined by the developer, so the on-screen prompts or tutorial are the authority for that title.

- Launch the title from the Arcade app.
- Follow its opening control prompts rather than assuming that every button has the same function as it does in another game.
- Test movement, selection and any menu controls during the tutorial or opening screen.
- If the game does not respond as expected, pause and check its listing again for a required-controller designation or compatibility note.
When a game is marked optional, a controller can still be preferable. The remote may be adequate for short sessions or menu-driven play, whereas a game built around continuous movement can feel easier with physical sticks and triggers. Optional means you have a choice; it does not promise that every player will prefer the remote.
When you need a separate controller
Apple’s Apple TV 4K download guidance says that most games in Apple Arcade require a third-party Bluetooth game controller or another accessory sold separately. “Most” is a catalog-level description, not a rule for every individual title. Use the game-page indicator to determine the requirement for a particular download.
A controller is mandatory when the listing says it is required or when the game’s control design cannot be operated with the Siri Remote. In that situation, connect a supported controller before trying to play. If you share Apple TV with other people, connecting the gamepad before launching the title can avoid interruptions when the game reaches its first control prompt.

Controllers Apple lists as compatible alternatives
Apple identifies several controller families for Apple TV gaming. These are the alternatives named in Apple’s guidance; individual game behavior can still vary.
| Controller family | Connection or compatibility description | When it is relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Sony PlayStation DualShock 4 | Apple-listed compatible controller | For games whose listings require or support a conventional gamepad |
| Sony DualSense | Apple-listed compatible controller | For titles requiring a separate controller and compatible with this family |
| Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth | Apple-listed Bluetooth model | For Apple Arcade titles that call for a Bluetooth game controller |
| Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 | Apple-listed compatible controller | For players who already use this controller family |
| Xbox Adaptive Controllers | Apple-listed compatible controllers | For supported accessibility-focused control setups |
| MFi-compatible game controllers | Controllers certified for Apple devices | For choosing an Apple-compatible gamepad outside the named console families |
The controller is sold separately. Apple’s compatibility list does not establish a universal feature set for every game, so check the title page even after selecting a controller from one of these families.
Choosing between the Siri Remote and a gamepad
Use the Siri Remote when
- The game page marks the controller as optional.
- You want the simplest setup with no additional accessory.
- You are playing a title whose controls are comfortable with directional and selection input.
- You are testing a game before deciding whether it deserves dedicated hardware.
Use a game controller when
- The listing marks a controller as required.
- You expect to play games that use several simultaneous controls.
- You prefer the feel of physical sticks, triggers and a larger button layout.
- You already own one of Apple’s listed compatible controller families.
There is no single best choice for the entire Arcade catalog. The remote is convenient and costs nothing beyond the Apple TV you already have, while a separate controller expands the number of playable titles and may make demanding controls easier. Let the per-game indicator determine whether the accessory is necessary, then let comfort determine whether it is desirable.

Apple TV 4K, software and regional limitations
Apple cautions that game availability and features vary by hardware, software, country and region. A game or control option shown for one Apple TV configuration or market may not appear identically elsewhere. The Apple TV 4K model alone therefore cannot guarantee access to every Arcade title or feature.

Before troubleshooting input, verify that the title is available in your region, that your Apple TV software meets the game’s stated requirements and that the game is supported on your particular hardware. If the Arcade app does not show a title, that may be an availability or compatibility issue rather than a Siri Remote problem.
An Apple Arcade subscription is required to download Arcade games on Apple TV 4K. This subscription requirement is separate from the controller decision: having a compatible gamepad does not replace the subscription, and subscribing does not make a controller-required title playable with the remote.

The game will not start with the Siri Remote
Return to the game’s Arcade listing and inspect the controller indicator. If it says a controller is required, the behavior is expected and you need one of the supported Bluetooth or MFi-compatible options. If the indicator says optional, check whether the game displays a control tutorial or an initial prompt that has not been completed.
The game appears in Arcade but says a controller is required
This is a title-level requirement, not evidence that your Apple TV 4K is defective. Pair a compatible controller, then relaunch the game. If you do not want to buy or connect one, choose another title whose listing marks the controller as optional.

A compatible controller is connected but the game still does not respond
Confirm that the controller is one of the families Apple lists and that its Bluetooth connection is active. Close and reopen the game after pairing, then follow the title’s own prompts. If the game remains unusable, recheck its listing and Apple TV software compatibility; features can vary by hardware and software version.
The remote works in menus but not during gameplay
Menu navigation does not prove that a game accepts remote input. Some titles can be browsed with the Siri Remote but require a gamepad once play begins. Use the controller indicator, rather than menu behavior, as the deciding test.
The title or controller option is missing
Check your country or region, Apple TV model and software version. Apple states that availability and features vary across those factors, so a missing title or option may be an intentional compatibility limitation.
A quick decision checklist
- Do you have an active Apple Arcade subscription for downloading on Apple TV 4K?
- Is the game available for your Apple TV hardware, software and region?
- Does the game page mark the controller as optional or required?
- If required, do you have a Bluetooth or MFi-compatible controller from an Apple-listed family?
- If optional, have you tried the Siri Remote controls shown by the game?
Following those checks answers the practical question before you download: a Siri Remote is enough for remote-compatible games, but a separate controller is necessary for titles that explicitly require one.
