A game offered through Xbox Free Play Days is a time-limited trial and normally stops launching when the advertised event ends. A Game Pass download is subscription access, not ownership: it works only while your subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog. A title redeemed through the former Games with Gold program follows different platform rules: Xbox One entitlements require a current qualifying subscription, while eligible Xbox 360 redemptions were generally permanent digital licenses.
The fastest way to identify your situation is to look at how the game reached your account, not whether it is still installed. Installation is only a local copy; the Xbox service checks the account entitlement each time you start the game.

These categories can overlap in the Xbox interface, so the fact that a game appears under “Ready to install” does not by itself prove that you own it.
Free Play Days: a trial, not a permanent copy
What the program promises
Xbox describes Free Play Days as letting eligible members “try critically acclaimed games for free for a limited time.” The wording is deliberate: the promotion grants temporary play rights, not a purchase license. The eligible membership tiers named on the Xbox Free Play Days program page are Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential.

What happens at the deadline
Every event has a defined window. Xbox Wire published one event running from October 1 through October 4, 2026. When that window closes, the trial entitlement expires. The game can remain installed, but launching it normally produces a message that you need to buy the title or have another valid entitlement. The exact cutoff can depend on the event’s stated time zone and the store’s service processing, so treat the published end date as the latest guaranteed time rather than planning to play after it.
How to continue without losing access
- Open the game’s Microsoft Store page before the Free Play Days window ends.
- Check that the purchase option is for the full game rather than an add-on, demo or trial extension.
- Complete the purchase on the Microsoft account you use on the console.
- After the transaction appears in your order history, start the installed copy again. If the console still shows the trial restriction, quit the game completely and restart the console so it refreshes the account license.
The promotion itself does not convert into ownership merely because you downloaded the game or played for several hours. Buying it is the remedy if you want uninterrupted access after the event.
Game Pass: access follows the subscription and the catalog
Downloading is not buying
A Game Pass game is licensed as part of the catalog service. The download places game files on your console, but it does not create a permanent purchase entitlement. Xbox advises members to use their member discount to buy a title before it leaves the catalog. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules also make access subject to the applicable Xbox and Game Pass terms.

Two separate conditions must remain true
- Your subscription is active. If the membership that grants the catalog benefit expires, the catalog license is no longer available to you.
- The game is still in the catalog. A title can leave even while your subscription remains paid. Renewing after removal will not bring back catalog access to that title.
If either condition fails, the installed game may stay on the storage drive, but the service will ask you to renew the qualifying plan or purchase the game. If you renew while the title is still listed, access can be restored under the membership’s rules. If Xbox has removed the title, purchase is the reliable way to keep playing.
What the member discount changes
The discount is an opportunity to purchase the game before removal; it is not an automatic ownership upgrade. Verify that the checkout is for the base game or the edition you want. Buying downloadable content alone will not license a base game that you only accessed through Game Pass.
Plan for a catalog removal
- Open the Game Pass section and select the game to see whether Xbox displays a leaving-date notice.
- Back up any saves according to your normal Xbox settings before the removal date; the catalog entitlement and your local save data are separate systems.
- Use the displayed member discount to purchase the game, or finish your playthrough before removal.
- After buying, confirm the game appears in your owned-games list rather than only in the Game Pass list.
Games with Gold: the platform determines the result
Xbox One titles
Xbox Wire’s August 2, 2023 guidance on the Games with Gold transition states: “You can continue to access any Xbox One games previously redeemed through Games with Gold in My Games and Apps if you remain a Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate member.” In practical terms, an Xbox One game redeemed through that program is tied to the qualifying membership. On a compatible Xbox Series console, the same Xbox One entitlement still requires that current membership.

If Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate expires, the title can remain visible in your library but will not be playable until you restore a qualifying membership. This is different from a Game Pass catalog game: the relevant question is whether you redeemed the Xbox One title through Games with Gold, not whether it is currently listed in the catalog.

Older Xbox 360 redemptions were generally treated as permanent licenses under the Games with Gold platform rules. Once redeemed, an eligible Xbox 360 title normally remains associated with the Microsoft account without requiring an ongoing Game Pass Core or Ultimate subscription. “Permanent” does not override Microsoft’s normal digital-license conditions: you must use the account that redeemed the game, and service or availability limitations can still affect downloading or redownloading.
Do not infer the platform from the console you currently own. A backward-compatible Xbox 360 game running on an Xbox One or Xbox Series console can retain the Xbox 360 entitlement rules. Check the original platform and redemption history if the license behavior is unclear.

Purchased games and redeemed retail codes
A direct purchase from the Microsoft Store or a successfully redeemed retail code creates a purchase entitlement rather than a promotional trial. The Microsoft account’s owned-games view is the authoritative place to verify that status. If the game appears there as owned, you can generally reinstall it without an active Game Pass subscription, subject to the account and digital-license conditions that apply to all Xbox purchases.
A code that granted a trial, an add-on or in-game currency is not the same as a code for the full game. Read the redemption confirmation and order history if the store page is ambiguous.
A decision tree for the “free” game on your console
- Does the store page say Free Play Days or show a specific end date? Treat it as a trial. Expect the launch right to stop at that date and buy the game to continue.
- Is it labeled as a Game Pass title? Access lasts only while your subscription and the catalog listing are active. If it is leaving, buy it with the member discount or complete your play before removal.
- Did you redeem it through Games with Gold? Identify the platform. Xbox One/Series use requires a current Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate membership; an eligible Xbox 360 redemption may be a permanent license.
- Did you buy it or redeem a full-game retail code? Check the owned-games view. That purchase entitlement is separate from a trial or catalog listing.
If none of these descriptions fits, open the game’s Store page while signed into the account that installed it and review the purchase history. Avoid buying again until you know whether a different Microsoft account owns the license.
How to verify what your account actually owns
On the Xbox console
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used for the download or redemption.
- Open My games & apps, then view the game’s details or manage its installation.
- Look for an ownership or purchase indication rather than only an “installed” label.
- If the title came from Games with Gold, check whether the account still has Game Pass Core or Game Pass Ultimate.
- If it came from Game Pass, compare the game’s current catalog status with your subscription status.
In your Microsoft account records
Review your order or redemption history for a purchase, a full-game code or a subscription benefit. A dated purchase receipt is stronger evidence of ownership than an old installation. If another household member redeemed the game, sign into that account or use the console’s approved sharing arrangement; the local profile that played the game is not necessarily the license holder.
Why a game may stop launching even when it is installed
- Trial ended: The Free Play Days event date has passed. Purchase the game.
- Subscription expired: Renew the plan that supplied Game Pass or the Xbox One Games with Gold entitlement.
- Catalog removal: Game Pass no longer lists the title. A subscription renewal alone is insufficient; purchase it.
- Wrong account: The license belongs to another Microsoft account. Sign in with the account shown in the purchase or redemption record.
- License refresh delay: Quit the game, restart the console and check the Store page while online so the service can revalidate the entitlement.
- Platform mismatch: Xbox 360 Games with Gold rules differ from Xbox One rules. Confirm which version was redeemed.
Do not delete the installed game as a first response. Removing files does not change the entitlement and can force a lengthy re-download after you restore access.
Important timing and account details
Promotions are governed by the dates and eligibility shown in the Xbox announcement or Store page. The October 1–4, 2026 Free Play Days event is one dated example, not a universal schedule for every game. Another event can use different dates, regions or eligible membership tiers.
Likewise, “free” does not describe one permanent category in Xbox’s ecosystem. A trial ends on an event deadline; a subscription benefit ends when membership or catalog eligibility ends; a redeemed Xbox 360 Games with Gold title can remain a license; and a purchase remains tied to the purchasing account. Recording which path you used is the simplest way to predict what will happen before you uninstall or let a subscription lapse.
