Yes—but only when both speakers support the same Bose linking system. Current SoundLink Speaker Link models can play together in Party Mode, while Stereo Mode requires two speakers of the same model. The name “Bose” alone is not enough to establish compatibility: you must check the exact model and generation first.
The current portable Speaker Link family comprises the SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), SoundLink Max, SoundLink Micro Portable Speaker (2nd Gen), and SoundLink Plus. Older SoundLink products use a separate Bose Connect compatibility list, and SimpleSync is a different feature intended for supported smart speakers or soundbars paired with one Bluetooth product.

What can be paired, and which mode will work?
Bose has more than one way to link products. The correct procedure depends on the model, generation and Bose ecosystem shown in its owner guide or support page.

| Current SoundLink Speaker Link | Links compatible portable Bluetooth speakers for synchronized Party playback or left/right Stereo playback. | Bose lists SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen), SoundLink Max, SoundLink Micro (2nd Gen) and SoundLink Plus. Different models can use Party Mode; Stereo Mode requires two speakers of the same model. |
| Older Bose Connect Party/Stereo | Uses the Bose Connect app, and on some products speaker buttons, to link certain older portable speakers. | Bose’s original SoundLink Flex guidance lists Flex, Color II, Micro, Revolve II, S1 Pro and Revolve Plus/Revolve variants. Exact support depends on the product page and owner guide. |
| Bose app grouping or SimpleSync | Groups compatible smart speakers in the Bose app, or synchronizes a supported Bose smart speaker or soundbar with one Bluetooth product. | This is a separate system. It does not prove that any two standalone Bose Bluetooth speakers can relay audio to each other. |
For current Speaker Link products, Bose describes the two playback choices as follows: Stereo Mode assigns one speaker to the left channel and the other to the right, while Party Mode sends synchronized audio to both. Stereo requires matching models; mixed current models use Party Mode. Bose states this distinction in its June 12, 2025 announcement of the SoundLink Plus and Micro speakers: Bose SoundLink Plus and Micro announcement.

Current models that support Speaker Link
Bose’s current support material identifies four portable models in this linking family:
- SoundLink Flex Portable Speaker (2nd Gen)
- SoundLink Max
- SoundLink Micro Portable Speaker (2nd Gen)
- SoundLink Plus
A pair made from two different entries in that list can play synchronized audio in Party Mode. To obtain left/right stereo separation, choose two units with the same model name and generation. For example, two SoundLink Max speakers can form a stereo pair; a SoundLink Max and a SoundLink Plus can link for Party Mode but are not a Stereo Mode pair.
Party Mode versus Stereo Mode
Party Mode is the flexible option. Both linked speakers play the same program, so it is useful when you want more even coverage across a room, patio or outdoor area. The models can be different as long as both are in the supported Speaker Link family. The sound is synchronized, but it is not a left/right stereo image.
Stereo Mode is stricter because each speaker receives a separate channel. One unit becomes left and the other right. Current Speaker Link requires two speakers with the same model and generation for this mode. A setting cannot turn a mixed pair into a true stereo pair. If the speakers announce Party after linking, the model or generation combination does not meet the Stereo requirement.
Placement also changes with the mode. For Stereo, put the speaker assigned to the left channel on the listener’s left and the right-channel unit on the listener’s right. For Party, place the speakers where they provide the coverage you need; channel orientation is irrelevant because both reproduce the same audio.
How to identify your exact Bose model
Look at the name printed on the speaker, the Bose app device card, the Bluetooth device name, and the label on the bottom or rear of the unit. “SoundLink Flex” is not a complete compatibility answer because the original Flex and the Flex (2nd Gen) belong to different linking arrangements.
The original SoundLink Flex was sold from 2021 and uses Bose Connect Party/Stereo functions where supported. The later Flex (2nd Gen) appears in the current Speaker Link family. Do not assume that a first-generation Flex will behave like a Flex (2nd Gen), even though their names are similar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOnce you have the full name and generation, check Bose’s product-specific support instructions. Bose’s current troubleshooting page for Speaker Link is at Difficulty using Party or Stereo modes. Setup instructions for the SoundLink Max describe the current button flow at Linking Multiple Speakers.

Set up two current Speaker Link speakers
The following manual process is the starting point for the Flex (2nd Gen), Max, Micro (2nd Gen) and Plus. Button labels and prompts can vary slightly by model, so use the exact owner guide if your speaker does not respond as described.
- Power on both speakers. Keep both units nearby while establishing the link and make sure they have sufficient charge.
- Connect your source device to one speaker. Pair the phone, tablet or computer with one speaker over Bluetooth and start playback or leave the source connected.
- Press and release Shortcut on the connected speaker. This begins the Speaker Link flow. The Shortcut button is the control Bose uses for linking on these current products.
- Press Shortcut on the second speaker when prompted. The speakers then negotiate the link and announce the mode. Two matching models announce Stereo and identify left/right roles; different supported models announce Party.
- Listen for the mode announcement. If the pair announces Party when you expected Stereo, verify that the models and generations are identical. A mixed-model pair is designed for Party Mode.
Bose notes that Shortcut-button behavior can be changed in the Bose app. If pressing Shortcut does not start linking, open the app and check the Shortcut assignment before repeating the procedure. The app is also useful for confirming which physical speaker is connected to the source and for installing product updates.
Switch between Party and Stereo after linking
On supported current models, press Shortcut on either linked speaker to change the mode. The Bose app can also provide a Stereo (L/R) switch. The exact control appears only when the connected products and current software support that option; a mixed-model pair cannot be turned into left/right Stereo simply by changing a setting.
If two matching speakers are linked but you still hear Party, check that both units really are the same generation. Rename them in the Bose app, update both products, and repeat the link process. A name such as “Living room left” and “Living room right” makes it easier to identify the units when assigning channels.
Using older SoundLink speakers with Bose Connect
Older models do not automatically become compatible with current Speaker Link speakers. Bose’s support entry for the original SoundLink Flex describes Party and Stereo functions through the Bose Connect app and lists compatible Connect-era products including:
- SoundLink Flex (original generation)
- SoundLink Color II
- SoundLink Micro
- SoundLink Revolve Bluetooth Speaker II
- S1 Pro System
- SoundLink Revolve Plus and related Revolve variants
The list is model-specific rather than a blanket promise for every Bose Bluetooth product. Check the exact product page or owner guide before buying a second unit. Bose’s original Flex instructions are available at Connecting Bose Bluetooth products to one another.
With a supported older combination, Bose Connect provides Party or Stereo controls. Without the app or a product feature that explicitly supports speaker linking, the speaker receives Bluetooth audio but does not forward that audio to another Bluetooth speaker. Ordinary Bluetooth pairing to a phone is therefore not evidence that a second Bose speaker can be added.

SimpleSync and Bose app grouping are different use cases
SimpleSync is designed for a supported Bose smart speaker or soundbar to play in sync with one Bluetooth product, such as supported headphones or a speaker. Bose’s list of compatible products is maintained at Products that support SimpleSync. It is not the same procedure as linking two portable SoundLink speakers with Shortcut.
The Bose app can also group multiple compatible smart speakers for home audio. That grouping depends on the products being app-compatible and does not turn two arbitrary portable Bluetooth speakers into a Speaker Link pair. Bose’s soundbar guidance explains this separate arrangement at Connecting Bose Bluetooth products to one another.
Choose the system that matches your equipment:
- Two current portable SoundLink speakers: use Speaker Link and Shortcut.
- Two older Connect-era portable speakers: use Bose Connect if the exact models are listed as compatible.
- A Bose smart speaker or soundbar plus one Bluetooth product: investigate SimpleSync.
- Several app-compatible smart speakers: use Bose app grouping where supported.
Range, placement and connection limits
Range figures are model and environment dependent. The SoundLink Plus owner guide recommends keeping the two speakers within 30 ft (9 m) of each other and within 30 ft (9 m) of the streaming device. Bose also recommends a shared, unobstructed room or outdoor area. Those are SoundLink Plus recommendations, not a universal specification for every Bose speaker. The guide is available as a PDF at SoundLink Plus Portable Speaker Owner’s Guide.

Walls, furniture, radio interference and distance can reduce reliability, and Bose cautions that actual performance varies with the device and environment. Keep the source device in the same general area as the speakers while testing a new link.
A separate current Speaker Link support page gives approximately 33 ft (10 m) as Bluetooth-range guidance for troubleshooting. Treat that as practical guidance for the cited products rather than a guaranteed distance for every model or room. A link that works in an open room may become unstable when one speaker is behind several walls or near sources of radio interference.
Troubleshoot a failed Party or Stereo link
Nothing happens when you press Shortcut
- Confirm that both speakers are powered on and have adequate battery charge.
- Check in the Bose app that Shortcut is enabled and still assigned to Speaker Link.
- Confirm that both units are one of the current supported models, or that an older pair is listed for Bose Connect.
- Install available product updates, then power-cycle both speakers and retry.
- Keep the two products close during the initial linking process, then move them to their intended positions.
If a model’s Shortcut assignment has been customized, the button may perform another function. Restore or verify the assignment in the app before assuming the hardware is incompatible.
The speakers connect but play in the wrong mode
Two different current models are expected to announce Party. Stereo requires matching model names and generations. If two units that appear identical do not offer Stereo, give them distinct names in the Bose app so you can verify which physical speaker is which, then check their software and generation details.

Audio is delayed, drops out or sounds unstable
- Move the speakers farther apart if they are extremely close, while keeping both within Bluetooth range.
- Move the source device and speakers into the same unobstructed area.
- Reduce distance and remove obstacles such as dense walls or large metal objects.
- Pause other nearby Bluetooth activity and retry.
- Update both products and reconnect from the beginning.
Bose specifically recommends moving products farther apart when delays occur, while still keeping them within the cited Bluetooth range. The right spacing is a practical compromise: enough separation for the link to stabilize, but not so much that the radio connection becomes weak.

The second speaker will not join an older Flex or Connect pair
Do not use current Speaker Link steps on an original Flex and expect the same result. Install or open Bose Connect and confirm that both exact models appear on its compatibility list. If the product is not listed, it may accept Bluetooth audio but lack the ability to transmit that audio onward.
The app sees duplicate or confusing speaker names
Rename the two same-model speakers distinctly in the Bose app, such as “Living room left” and “Living room right.” This does not expand compatibility, but it helps you identify the units when selecting Stereo roles or diagnosing which speaker is connected to the source.
What to check before buying a second speaker
If you want to add a unit, start with the full model and generation of the speaker you already own. Search for a compatible Bose SoundLink speaker only after confirming that it supports the same linking mode. A matching model is required for current Speaker Link Stereo, while a different supported current model is suitable for Party Mode.
Do not choose an arbitrary Bose Bluetooth speaker solely because it uses the Bose name or pairs successfully with your phone. Bose’s compatibility lists are tied to specific product families and software. Retail inventory and availability can change, so verify the current support page before purchase.
If your goal is stereo music, buying a second unit with the same model and generation is the straightforward path. If your goal is wider synchronized playback, a supported mixed-model Party pair may be suitable. In either case, retain the receipt and confirm the exact model designation, since a first-generation and second-generation product may look similar while using different linking instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A quick decision checklist
- Read the complete model name and generation on both speakers.
- Decide whether you need synchronized Party playback or left/right Stereo.
- For current Speaker Link, choose from Flex (2nd Gen), Max, Micro (2nd Gen) and Plus.
- For Stereo, make the two models identical; for Party, supported current models may be mixed.
- For older products, verify Bose Connect compatibility instead of using current Shortcut instructions.
- Keep the speakers and source within the model’s recommended range and in an unobstructed area.
- Update firmware, verify Shortcut settings and give same-model speakers distinct app names if setup fails.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I pair two different Bose speaker models?
Yes, when both are current SoundLink Speaker Link models—Flex (2nd Gen), Max, Micro (2nd Gen) or Plus. A mixed pair plays synchronized audio in Party Mode. Stereo Mode requires two speakers of the same model and generation.
Can two SoundLink Flex speakers make a stereo pair?
It depends on the generation. Two original Flex speakers use the Bose Connect system, while two Flex (2nd Gen) speakers use current Speaker Link. Confirm the generation first and follow the matching Bose instructions.

Can an original SoundLink Flex pair with a Flex (2nd Gen)?
Do not assume they can. The original Flex and Flex (2nd Gen) belong to different Bose linking arrangements. Check the exact model-specific compatibility guidance before attempting a mixed-generation pair.

How do I put current Bose speakers in Party Mode?
Power on both supported speakers, connect your phone, tablet or computer to one over Bluetooth, press and release Shortcut on that speaker, then press Shortcut on the second when prompted. Supported mixed models announce Party after linking.
How do I get left/right Stereo Mode?
Use two current Speaker Link speakers with the same model name and generation. Complete the Shortcut linking process, then use the Stereo (L/R) control in the Bose app or press Shortcut as directed by the model. Mixed models cannot be changed to true Stereo.
Why does pressing Shortcut do nothing?
Check that both speakers are powered on, Shortcut is enabled and still assigned to Speaker Link in the Bose app, and both products are supported. Install available updates, then power-cycle and retry. Older products may require Bose Connect instead.

Can Bose Connect pair any two older Bose Bluetooth speakers?
No. Bose Connect Party and Stereo features apply only to listed products. Bose’s original Flex guidance names Flex, Color II, Micro, Revolve II, S1 Pro and Revolve Plus/Revolve variants, but you should verify the exact model in its owner guide.
Is SimpleSync the same as pairing two portable Bose speakers?
No. SimpleSync links a supported Bose smart speaker or soundbar with one compatible Bluetooth product. It is separate from SoundLink Speaker Link and does not establish that two standalone portable Bose Bluetooth speakers can relay audio.
How far apart can the speakers be?
For SoundLink Plus, Bose recommends no more than 30 ft (9 m) between the speakers and no more than 30 ft (9 m) from the streaming device, preferably in the same unobstructed area. Other models and environments can differ; Bose also cites approximately 33 ft (10 m) as practical Bluetooth guidance on a troubleshooting page.
Why do my two matching speakers still play Party instead of Stereo?
Verify that both units are the same generation, not just the same product family. Rename them distinctly in the Bose app, check for updates, and reconnect. If the products are actually different models or generations, Party is the expected mode.
Can I link more than one other speaker with SoundLink Plus?
The SoundLink Plus owner guide says the speaker can link to one other speaker at a time. Do not treat that model-specific limit as a universal rule for every Bose product; consult the guide for the models you own.
Should I buy a matching Bose speaker or any Bose Bluetooth speaker?
Buy only after checking the exact compatibility list. A matching model and generation is required for current Speaker Link Stereo. A different model is appropriate for Party only when it is one of the supported current Speaker Link products.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Two Bose speakers can play together when they share a supported Bose linking system. Current SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen), Max, Micro (2nd Gen) and Plus models can mix for Party Mode, but Stereo Mode requires two identical models and generations. Older speakers use Bose Connect, while SimpleSync and Bose app grouping serve different smart-speaker and soundbar arrangements.
