Yes, but opting out of AI training and deleting chatbot data are separate actions. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini provide controls that can limit the use of future conversations for model improvement, plus tools for deleting chats or account activity. Those controls do not promise that material already reviewed by people, included in a training run, or retained for safety will disappear immediately. The exact result depends on the provider, your account type and the setting you change.
This guide covers current consumer-account guidance checked on October 11, 2026. Menus and policies can change, so confirm the label shown in your own account before relying on it.

Opting out is not the same as deleting your data
An AI-training opt-out normally controls future use of conversations for improving a model. It does not automatically erase chat history, saved memories, uploaded files, feedback, shared links or data held by connected services.
Deletion is a separate request. Removing a conversation from the visible history may start a backend deletion process, but providers describe different retention periods for safety, legal, security and human-review purposes. No setting should be described as removing content from a model that has already been trained.

- Chat deletion: removes an individual conversation or activity record from the service interface and begins the provider’s stated deletion process.
- Account deletion: is a broader request that may cover the account and associated data, subject to the provider’s policy and exceptions.
- Separate data paths: memories, thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, shared links, uploaded files and connected services may require their own cleanup.
Check your account type first
Personal, business, school and employer-managed accounts can have different defaults and administrator controls. A workspace administrator may control retention or prevent you from changing a privacy setting yourself. The steps below describe the reviewed consumer products, not every enterprise configuration.
- Identify whether you are signed into a personal account or an organization-managed workspace.
- Note which provider and app you are using; a mobile app, web app and API account can expose different controls.
- After changing a setting, reopen the privacy or data-controls page and confirm that the new state is still displayed.
- If you need erasure for legal, employment or regulatory reasons, use the provider’s formal account or privacy request process rather than relying only on a chat-history button.
ChatGPT: stop new conversations being used for training
Turn off model improvement for an eligible personal account
- Open ChatGPT while signed in.
- Go to Settings and open Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- Check the switch again after navigating away. OpenAI’s current help guidance says that when this option is off, new conversations will not be used to train OpenAI models.
The setting applies account-wide across devices when you are signed in. It does not remove regular, archived or project chats, so use the chat’s delete control separately if you want those records removed from your history.
Use Temporary Chat for a more limited history
Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories and are not used to improve models. OpenAI says they may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety. That is a retention limit, not a promise that every copy is erased immediately when you close the conversation.
Watch feedback and memory separately
Submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback after opting out can allow the associated conversation to be used for training. A deleted chat also does not automatically delete a saved memory; review and remove memories through the memory controls as a separate step.

Managed workspaces can follow organization policies and offer different self-service controls. If the switch is missing or locked, ask the workspace administrator which policy applies.
Claude: Model Improvement, Incognito chats and deletion
Limit model-improvement use
Anthropic’s consumer products include Free, Pro, Max and Claude Code under those plans. Anthropic says chats and coding sessions may be used when a user allows model improvement, when content is flagged for safety review, or when another explicit opt-in applies. Open the account’s Privacy Settings and disable Model Improvement if you do not want to allow the ordinary improvement-use pathway.
Use Incognito chats for a conversation that should not improve Claude
Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito is therefore a conversation-level option, while the privacy switch governs the broader account setting.

Delete a conversation
Delete the individual conversation from Claude’s history. Anthropic says it disappears from the history immediately and is ordinarily removed from backend systems within 30 days. That timing is an ordinary policy window, not a guarantee that safety, legal or other permitted records are removed on the same schedule.

Understand training already in progress
If improvement use was allowed, Anthropic may retain data in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. Turning Model Improvement off does not remove data from training runs already in progress or from models that have already been trained. Anthropic also says flagged policy-violation inputs and outputs may be retained for up to two years, safety-classification scores for up to seven years and feedback data for five years.
Gemini: turn off Keep Activity and remove Gemini Apps Activity
Stop future chats appearing in Activity or training Google AI
- Open Gemini Apps while signed into your personal Google account.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity.
- Turn off Keep Activity.
- Return to the activity controls and verify that the setting is off.
Google’s current Gemini Privacy Hub says future chats will not appear in your Activity and will not be used to train its AI models unless you choose to send Google feedback. This is a future-use control; it does not erase information retained by other Google services.
Delete Gemini activity or an individual chat
Review and delete records in My Activity. Deleting an individual chat in the Gemini app also deletes the related Activity. If Keep Activity is off, Google says chats are retained for 72 hours so Gemini can provide the service, process feedback and protect users.

When Keep Activity is on, the default auto-delete period is 18 months. Google says you can change it to three months, 36 months or indefinite retention. Chats reviewed by human reviewers are disconnected from your account and may remain for up to three years even after you delete Activity. Turning off Keep Activity does not delete data held by other Google services.

Workspace administrators can control Gemini settings for managed accounts. If your account belongs to a school or employer, the administrator’s policy may override the personal-account controls described here.
Current Copilot guidance is not sufficient for a safe how-to
The Microsoft page located for this comparison explicitly covers the older Copilot app and directs users of the newer experience to different documentation. Do not apply that older app’s menu path to the current app. Before changing Copilot settings or promising deletion, find the current first-party guide for the exact Copilot product, account type and region.

A practical cleanup checklist
Use this sequence when you want both a training opt-out and data reduction:

- Change future-use settings first. Disable ChatGPT’s Improve the model for everyone, Claude’s Model Improvement or Gemini’s Keep Activity, as applicable.
- Delete visible conversations. Remove individual chats or the relevant activity records instead of assuming the opt-out clears history.
- Review memories. In ChatGPT, deleting a chat does not automatically remove a saved memory.
- Remove feedback. Check conversations where you submitted ratings or written feedback; feedback can create a separate data-use path.
- Check shared links and files. A conversation shared with another person, or a file stored in a connected service, may have a separate lifecycle.
- Check connected services. Gemini’s activity controls do not necessarily govern data held by other Google services.
- Confirm the result. Revisit the setting, check that the chat is gone from history or activity, and save any confirmation shown by the service.
- Escalate when necessary. For a full account erasure or a managed workspace, use the provider’s formal privacy request or contact the administrator.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming an opt-out is retroactive
OpenAI describes exclusion for new conversations, Google describes exclusion for future chats, and Anthropic says an opt-out cannot undo training runs already in progress or models already trained. Change the setting before sending sensitive material, not after.
Assuming a deleted chat is erased everywhere instantly
Provider policies include safety and human-review exceptions. OpenAI’s Temporary Chats can last up to 30 days, Claude’s ordinary backend deletion can take up to 30 days, and Google says human-reviewed Gemini material may remain up to three years.
Ignoring account boundaries
A personal setting may not control a work or school workspace. Administrator policies can change defaults, retention and who can perform deletion.
Sending feedback after opting out
Feedback is often treated as an explicit signal for review or improvement. Avoid rating a sensitive conversation if your goal is to minimize additional use, and inspect the provider’s current feedback wording before submitting it.

- You only want to limit future training: turn off the provider’s model-improvement setting and verify it.
- You want a conversation out of the visible account history: delete that chat or activity record as well.
- You used sensitive information in the past: delete the chat, inspect memories and feedback, remove shared artifacts and submit a formal account or privacy request if necessary.
- You use an employer or school account: ask the administrator about retention and deletion authority before assuming you can remove the data.
These controls describe different privacy trade-offs rather than a single “most private” chatbot. Compare the scope of the opt-out, residual retention, human-review rules, feedback handling and managed-account controls for the service you actually use.
