Not directly if the Mac is running macOS. Minecraft’s official desktop edition for macOS is Java Edition, while Bedrock Edition is officially available on Windows 10 and 11 and on supported consoles and mobile devices. Because there is no officially documented native Bedrock client for macOS, a Bedrock world cannot be opened and played in Bedrock on a Mac. You can, however, move a Bedrock world between Windows and another supported Bedrock device with Minecraft Realms, or carry an exported .mcworld backup between computers.
The short answer
The answer depends on what you mean by “between Mac and Windows.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Mac running macOS to Windows Bedrock: You cannot transfer a Java world into Bedrock by simply copying it. A Java world and a Bedrock world use different editions and file formats.
- Windows Bedrock to Mac for native play: You cannot open that Bedrock world in an official Bedrock client on macOS, because Minecraft documents Java Edition—not Bedrock Edition—as the Mac desktop edition.
- Windows Bedrock to another supported Bedrock device: Yes. Realms is Minecraft’s supported cloud-transfer method. You upload the world from the source device and download a copy on the destination.
- Mac and Windows as file storage: You can carry an exported
.mcworldpackage on a USB flash drive or external SSD, but moving the file does not install a Bedrock runtime on macOS.
In practical terms, a Mac can be the place where you store or move a Bedrock backup, but it is not an officially supported place to play that Bedrock world. To play Bedrock after the transfer, the destination must be Windows 10/11 or another platform listed for Bedrock.
Which Minecraft edition does each computer use?
Minecraft’s edition guide states that Java Edition is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The same guide lists Bedrock Edition for Windows 10 and 11, Xbox One and Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile. That platform split is the key limitation behind Mac-to-Windows questions.

| Computer or platform | Official desktop edition listed by Minecraft | Can it run Bedrock natively? |
|---|---|---|
| Mac running macOS | Java Edition | No official macOS Bedrock client is documented |
| Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC | Bedrock Edition is listed; Java is also available for Windows | Yes, for the Bedrock edition |
| Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, or Windows Mobile | Bedrock Edition | Yes, where the platform and game installation are supported |
The distinction is about the game edition, not the brand of computer. Installing a copied world file on a Mac cannot turn Java Edition into Bedrock Edition. Likewise, signing into the same Microsoft account does not change which edition the Mac client runs.
What Realms can and cannot do
Minecraft describes Realms as a way to upload single-player worlds to the cloud and download them on other devices for continued play. For a Bedrock world, this is the supported route between two devices that both run Bedrock.
What Realms does
- Stores a Bedrock world in a Realm slot in the cloud.
- Lets you download that world to another supported Bedrock device.
- Creates a separate local copy on the destination. Minecraft labels the downloaded copy “World name – Copy.”
- Allows the downloaded copy to be renamed with the pencil icon in the destination Worlds list.
What Realms does not do
- It does not add Bedrock Edition to macOS.
- It does not convert a Java world into a Bedrock world.
- It does not make a Bedrock world playable in the Mac Java client.
- It does not remove the need for the destination device to support Bedrock.
Therefore, Realms can move a world from a Windows Bedrock installation to another Windows Bedrock installation, a console, or a supported mobile device. It cannot make that same world playable in Minecraft Java Edition on a Mac.
How to transfer a Bedrock world between supported devices with Realms
Use this procedure when both the source and destination run a supported Bedrock version. Minecraft’s instructions also advise updating both devices before beginning.

1. Update both installations
Install the current available Minecraft update on the source and destination devices. Version differences can prevent a world from appearing correctly or make the transfer harder to diagnose.
2. Open the source world’s Realm slot
- Launch Minecraft on the source Bedrock device.
- Select Play.
- Open the Realms tab and select the Realm you will use.
- In Realms Hub, select a world slot.
- Choose Edit World.
3. Upload or replace the world
At the bottom of the Realm Hub, choose the action that matches the slot:
- Upload World: choose this when the selected slot is empty.
- Replace World: choose this when the slot already contains a world. Confirm the replacement when Minecraft asks.
Wait for the upload to finish before closing Minecraft or switching devices. Replacing a slot changes the world stored in that slot, so select the correct Realm and slot before confirming.
4. Sign in on the destination
- Launch Minecraft on the destination Bedrock device.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used to access the Realm.
- Select Play, open Realms, and select the Realm.
- Open Realms Hub, select the uploaded world slot, and choose Edit World.
- Select Download World.
5. Open and rename the local copy
Return to the destination device’s Worlds tab. The downloaded world appears as “World name – Copy.” Select the pencil icon if you want to give the local copy a different name. The copy is now stored on that supported Bedrock device for ordinary local play.

How much does the Realms transfer route cost?
Realms requires an active trial or subscription. The official Realms page showed these monthly prices when checked in 2026:
| Bedrock Realms option | Price shown | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Realms for Bedrock | $3.99 USD per month | Current monthly product-page price checked in 2026 |
| Realms Plus | $7.99 USD per month | Current monthly product-page price checked in 2026 |
Those are subscription prices, not one-time transfer fees, and prices or availability can vary by region, account, taxes, or later product changes. If you only need to move one world once, check whether an available trial meets your needs before starting a paid subscription. The transfer still requires the destination to use the same Microsoft account and a supported Bedrock installation.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can you move a .mcworld file from Mac to Windows?
Yes, as a file-transfer operation. Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation describes .mcworld as an importable world package and identifies the minecraftWorlds folder as the location used for world data. That makes an exported package useful as a backup artifact or as a way to carry data between systems.
What a file transfer is good for
- Keeping an offline backup of an exported Bedrock world.
- Moving the backup on a USB flash drive or external SSD.
- Importing the package into a supported Bedrock installation on Windows or another compatible device.
- Preserving a copy independently of a Realm subscription.
What a file transfer cannot solve
- It cannot make the Mac Java client load a Bedrock world.
- It cannot supply a missing Bedrock executable for macOS.
- It cannot guarantee that a package exported by one game version will behave identically after a major version change.
Use the file as a backup or transport container, not as an edition converter. If the destination is a Windows 10/11 Bedrock installation, import the package through the supported Minecraft tooling available on that system. If the destination is macOS, the file can remain stored there, but native Bedrock play is still unavailable according to Minecraft’s documented platform list.

Using a USB drive or external SSD
Removable storage is optional. Copy the exported .mcworld package to the drive, eject it safely, connect it to the destination computer, and copy the package locally before importing it into a supported Bedrock installation. Keeping the original package untouched gives you a recovery copy if an import fails.

Common situations and the correct path
You have a Bedrock world on Windows and want to play it on another PC
Install Bedrock on the destination Windows 10/11 PC, update both installations, and use Realms upload and download with the same Microsoft account. If you prefer an offline method, export a .mcworld package and import it on the destination.
You have a Bedrock world on Windows and want to play it on a MacBook
There is no official native Bedrock route on macOS. Realms can hold the world and can deliver it to another supported Bedrock device, but downloading it to a Mac does not make it playable in Java Edition. Use Windows 10/11 or another listed Bedrock platform for the destination.
Best Value
You have Minecraft Java Edition on a Mac and want the same world on Windows Bedrock
Simply copying the Java save or uploading it to a Bedrock Realm is not an officially documented conversion process. The supported Realms workflow described by Minecraft applies to transferring Bedrock worlds between Bedrock devices. Keep the Mac world in Java unless you have a separate, compatible conversion workflow and understand that conversion can change world data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou only need an emergency backup
Export the Bedrock world as a .mcworld package and keep at least one copy on a separate drive. A Realm provides cloud access and cross-device downloading; an exported package provides an offline artifact. Neither option changes the edition supported by macOS.
Troubleshooting a failed transfer
The world is missing from the destination
- Confirm that both devices are signed in with the same Microsoft account.
- Verify that the upload completed in the correct Realm slot.
- Update Minecraft on both devices, then reopen the Realms tab.
- Check the destination’s Play → Realms path rather than only the local Worlds list; the world must be downloaded before it appears locally.
You selected the wrong Realm slot
Return to the source device’s Realms Hub and inspect the slot name before uploading. If the slot already contains another world, Minecraft presents Replace World; confirming that action overwrites the world stored in that slot with the selected source world.
The download appears under an unexpected name
Look for “World name – Copy” in the destination Worlds tab. This is the expected label for the downloaded local copy. Use the pencil icon to rename it after confirming that it is the correct world.
The .mcworld file will not import
Check that the file was exported completely, copy it from the removable drive to local storage, and use an up-to-date supported Bedrock installation for the import. Keep the original package unchanged so you can try again. If the destination is macOS, an import failure is not the underlying issue: the platform still lacks an officially documented native Bedrock client.
Quick Recap
What to remember before you start
- Mac desktop Minecraft is Java Edition. Bedrock is officially listed for Windows 10/11 and other supported platforms, not macOS.
- Realms is the supported Bedrock transfer method. Upload or replace the source world in a Realm, then download it on the destination.
- Use the same Microsoft account and current versions. These are explicit requirements in the Realms workflow.
- A downloaded Realm world becomes a local copy. Minecraft labels it “World name – Copy,” and you can rename it.
.mcworld, USB drives, and external SSDs move data only. They do not provide Bedrock for macOS.
