Sending cryptocurrency from an IRA to a wallet you personally control is generally treated as an IRA distribution of property. A traditional-IRA distribution is generally included in income and may incur the 10% additional tax for an early distribution unless an exception applies. A Roth IRA distribution is tax-free only when it meets the five-tax-year and qualifying-event rules.
A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer to another eligible retirement account is a different transaction. Once cryptocurrency has been lawfully distributed and is outside the IRA, moving it between wallets or accounts that belong to you is generally non-taxable, except for digital assets used or withheld to pay transaction fees.

What happens when IRA crypto goes to your personal wallet?
An IRA is a retirement arrangement, while a personal wallet is an account or address you control outside that arrangement. The tax question is therefore determined by the destination and the change in account status, not by whether the asset is Bitcoin, another token, or stored in cold storage.
When an IRA custodian sends the cryptocurrency to your personal address, the transaction is normally analyzed as an in-kind distribution. The custodian should determine and report the fair-market value on the distribution date under its procedures. You receive the asset instead of cash, but the distribution can still be taxable.

Putting the coins on a hardware wallet, paper backup, software wallet, or another self-custody setup does not preserve IRA status. A wallet is a custody tool; it is not automatically an eligible retirement account. The device also does not change the tax treatment of the distribution.
Traditional IRA: income and possible early-distribution tax
Ordinary income
For a traditional IRA, a distribution is generally included in gross income under the applicable IRA rules. With an in-kind transfer, the relevant amount is the fair-market value assigned on the distribution date, as determined and reported through the custodian’s process. Ask the custodian how it values the cryptocurrency, which time is used, and what statement you will receive.
The 10% additional tax
If the distribution is early, the 10% additional tax described in 26 U.S.C. §72 may apply. The age threshold, exceptions, and other details depend on your facts. The 10% amount is separate from ordinary income tax, so an exception to the additional tax does not automatically make the distribution income-tax-free.

The 10% additional tax is a U.S. Congress rule in the 2024 codification. Before authorizing the transfer, estimate both the ordinary-income effect and any additional tax, using your age and a tax professional’s review of possible exceptions.
Roth IRA: when is the distribution qualified?
Roth treatment depends on whether the distribution is qualified; the wallet destination cannot make it qualified. The qualification test uses a five-tax-year period and a qualifying event under the Roth IRA rules in 26 U.S.C. §408A. The five-tax-year qualification period is stated in the U.S. Congress 2024 codification.
If the requirements are not met, do not assume that moving the cryptocurrency to a private wallet is tax-free. The tax treatment can depend on what portion is distributed and on your individual history. Have the custodian and a qualified tax professional analyze the distribution before it is sent.

How a trustee-to-trustee transfer differs
A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer moves assets between eligible retirement arrangements. It keeps the assets within retirement-account custody and is not the same as sending them to a personal wallet. A wallet address you control generally is not the receiving trustee or an eligible retirement arrangement.

| Route | Tax timing | Account status | Custody | Liquidity and control | Record-keeping |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IRA to personal wallet | Usually a current distribution; traditional IRA income and possible 10% additional tax may apply | Assets leave the eligible retirement arrangement | Personal private-key control | Personal use and transfers are possible after distribution | Retain custodian valuation, units, dates, hash, and basis records |
| Trustee-to-trustee transfer | Continued retirement deferral when properly executed | Assets remain in an eligible retirement arrangement | Receiving retirement-account trustee or custodian | Subject to the receiving arrangement’s rules and supported assets | Keep transfer instructions and statements from both trustees |
| Wallet to another wallet owned by you | Generally non-taxable, except digital assets used or withheld for transaction fees | Already outside the IRA | Personal wallet or account control | Address, network, and key-management responsibility | Keep transaction hash, units, dates, fee amounts, and basis allocation |
Step-by-step checklist before moving the asset
- Ask the custodian about an in-kind distribution. Confirm that cryptocurrency can be distributed rather than sold, the exact fair-market-value methodology, the valuation date and time, the assets and units that will be reported, and the statements you will receive.
- Ask about a retirement-account transfer instead. Request a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer to another eligible retirement arrangement if your objective is to keep retirement status. Obtain confirmation that the proposed recipient qualifies; a personal wallet is not presumed to qualify.
- Model the tax before approval. For a traditional IRA, estimate ordinary income and the possible 10% additional tax, then check whether a statutory exception applies. For a Roth IRA, test the five-tax-year and qualifying-event requirements. Include state-tax and plan-document questions in the review because this explanation concerns U.S. federal rules.
- Confirm the operational details. Verify the destination address, blockchain network, asset type, and who pays the transaction fee. A wrong address or incompatible network can make a blockchain transfer irreversible. That is an operational loss risk, not a tax exception.
- Save the custodian’s records before sending. Keep the distribution statement, units, fair-market value, date, wallet addresses, transaction hash, and any basis information. Export records while the custodian still has access to the account.
- Reconcile the post-distribution transfer. If you later move the same assets between wallets or accounts that belong to you, record the hash and fee. Under IRS digital-asset FAQ answer A81, that self-to-self transfer is generally non-taxable except to the extent digital assets are used or withheld to pay transaction services.
What records should you keep?
Distribution evidence
- Custodian statement showing the distribution date and fair-market value.
- The number and type of digital-asset units delivered.
- Wallet addresses, network, and transaction hash.
- Written confirmation of whether the transaction was an in-kind distribution or a trustee-to-trustee transfer.
Basis and identification evidence
Keep records that connect each lot to its units, acquisition or distribution date, value, and subsequent transfers. IRS digital-asset guidance addresses wallet- and account-based basis allocation and identification beginning with transactions on January 1, 2025. The January 1, 2025 transition is an Internal Revenue Service 2024–2025 guidance date; it does not eliminate the need to preserve earlier custodian records.

“Can I move Bitcoin from a self-directed IRA to my cold wallet?”
You can request an in-kind distribution if the custodian permits it, but the move is normally treated as a distribution to you. The fact that the destination is offline cold storage does not keep the Bitcoin in the IRA. Obtain the custodian’s valuation and tax reporting details first.
“Will sending IRA crypto to cold storage trigger taxes?”
The trigger is the distribution from the IRA, not the temperature or security model of the wallet. A traditional IRA distribution may create ordinary income and, if early, the 10% additional tax unless an exception applies. A Roth distribution must satisfy its own qualification rules.

“Can I roll crypto from one IRA into another wallet?”
A wallet is not automatically an IRA or another eligible retirement arrangement. If the goal is to preserve retirement status, ask both custodians about a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer between eligible accounts. Sending the asset to a personal address is analyzed separately as a distribution.
“Is a wallet-to-wallet crypto transfer taxable?”
After a lawful distribution, a transfer between wallets, addresses, or accounts belonging to the same taxpayer is generally non-taxable under IRS digital-asset FAQ answer A81. Digital assets used or withheld to pay transaction services are the stated exception. The later self-transfer does not reverse or erase the earlier IRA distribution.
Risks that are easy to miss
- Valuation disagreement: Different custodians may use different pricing sources or valuation times. Get the method in writing before the transaction.
- Unsupported assets: A receiving retirement arrangement may not support every token, network, or custody method. Confirm eligibility and custody capability in advance.
- Irreversible delivery: Blockchains generally do not provide a universal undo function. Check the full address and network, and follow any required memo or tag instructions.
- Key loss: Self-custody transfers responsibility for private-key security, backups, and access recovery to you. Loss of a key can mean loss of access even when the tax reporting is correct.
- Incomplete history: Moving coins through multiple personal wallets can make basis identification harder. Preserve the original IRA distribution record and every subsequent hash.
- Jurisdiction and plan differences: This explanation covers U.S. federal tax concepts. State rules, the IRA agreement, custodian policy, your age, basis, and statutory exceptions can change the result.
Questions to ask before signing the instruction
- Is this an in-kind distribution, a sale followed by cash distribution, or a trustee-to-trustee transfer?
- What fair-market value, date, and pricing source will be reported?
- Which units and assets will leave the account?
- What statement or tax document will show the transaction?
- Can the receiving destination legally be another eligible retirement arrangement instead of a personal wallet?
- Which network and fee asset will be used, and will any digital asset be withheld for fees?
- Who will maintain the basis and transaction history after the transfer?
Because an error can create both a tax bill and an irreversible asset loss, obtain individualized advice from the IRA custodian and a qualified tax professional before initiating an in-kind distribution.
