Yes—you can move a TV without its original box if you build a fitted protective container, shield the screen and corners without pressing on the panel, prevent movement inside the carton, and carry the set with at least two people. Transport it upright whenever possible and verify that your vehicle can hold it securely.
Samsung’s service-packing instructions describe a substitute cardboard cover or box for sets whose original packaging is unavailable. Those instructions were published by Samsung Argentina for transport to service centers, so use them as practical guidance and check the current manual for your exact model and region.

What you need before packing
Do not begin by wrapping the television in a blanket and hoping it will be enough. A blanket can cushion a surface, but it does not create a rigid barrier, protect corners from impact, or stop the TV from flexing when the vehicle moves. Build protection in layers and use a container that matches the set’s dimensions.
| Material | Purpose | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Protective film or similar non-abrasive wrap | Separates the display from other packing materials | It must not be tightened or arranged in a way that presses on the screen. |
| Corrugated cardboard | Creates rigid front, back and side protection | Use pieces large enough to cover the set and protect the corners. |
| Cardboard separators | Keep the television away from the carton walls and other objects | They should stay firmly in place rather than slide against the panel. |
| Protective foam | Absorbs bumps and fills structured gaps | Samsung’s service-packing procedure specifies a minimum 20 mm foam cover; that figure is not a universal household-moving requirement for every TV. |
| Filler material | Stops shifting inside the carton | Fill voids without pushing on the screen or bending the chassis. |
| Packing tape | Secures the cardboard cover and carton | Apply it to the outer packaging, never directly to the display or a finished surface. |
You also need a clean, soft work surface, a tape measure, a place to store the stand screws, and at least one capable helper. Best Buy’s consumer handling guidance also recommends two people for carrying a TV.

Measure the TV and plan the route
Record the set’s actual dimensions
Measure the television’s width, height and depth, including any fixed rear housing that will remain attached. Measure with the stand removed if the model allows removal and you intend to transport it that way. Record the weight from the model documentation or rating label if available. The replacement carton or cardboard cover must leave room for protective layers while still holding the set firmly.
Do not buy a carton based only on the screen-size label. Two televisions with the same diagonal measurement can have different bezels, depths, feet and rear housings. No single box size or universal “TV moving kit” is established for all models.
Check the vehicle before lifting
Measure the usable opening, interior length, height and width of the vehicle. Best Buy gives approximate vehicle-size suggestions but explicitly says they do not guarantee a fit; its advice is to measure your own vehicle. Plan the route through doorways, stairs, elevators and tight turns before the TV is wrapped.

A vehicle that can technically accept the set is not necessarily suitable. The television needs to remain upright, supported and secured without being squeezed against a door, ceiling or other cargo. Remove loose objects from the loading area and reserve a clear place where the carton cannot slide.
How to pack a TV without its original box
- Prepare a protected work area. Clear a broad, clean surface and cover it with a soft protective layer. Keep pets, tools and loose hardware away from the display.
- Disconnect and document everything. Unplug the power cable and all connected devices. Photograph cable connections if reconnection may be confusing. Put the remote, cables and screws in a labeled bag that will not be placed against the screen.
- Remove the stand only if the model permits it. Follow the exact model manual before removing feet or a pedestal. Place the stand and its screws together in a separate padded package. If the stand is not designed to be removed, do not force it.
- Place the television on the protected surface. Use two people and support the frame rather than pressing the display. Keep fingers, straps and tools off the panel.
- Cover the display gently. Samsung’s packing directions call for protective film or a similar material over the screen and warn against pressure. Lay the material over the panel without tightening it across the front. Do not place loose accessories, hard cardboard edges or hardware directly on the display.
- Add a rigid layer. Fit corrugated cardboard around the front and back, or make a sleeve that covers the set’s broad faces. Cardboard separators can create a stand-off between the television and the outer carton. The rigid layer should not bow inward onto the screen.
- Protect every corner. Corners are exposed to impacts when the package is set down or moved through doorways. Use fitted foam or folded cardboard at each corner, making sure the protection stays in position rather than sliding across the panel.
- Build a fitted carton or cover. When the original box is unavailable, Samsung says a cardboard cover matching the TV’s dimensions can be used. Assemble a box or sleeve with enough internal room for the protective layers, but avoid a cavity so large that the TV can swing inside it.
- Pad the bottom first. Place protective material at the bottom of the carton before lowering the television into it. The bottom layer should cushion the set without creating an unstable ridge.
- Center the television. Lower it into the carton with two people. Keep equal protection around the sides and corners so no edge touches the box wall. Add separators or foam where needed.
- Fill the remaining gaps. Add filler around the perimeter until the set cannot shift, contact the carton edges or rattle. Check that filler is supporting the frame and sides, not pushing against the display.
- Close and secure the package. Fit the top protection, close the cardboard cover or carton, and tape the outer seams. Mark the package “fragile” and identify the top and screen side if other people will handle it. Labels do not replace careful lifting.
How to carry and load the packed TV
Use two people and a coordinated lift
One person should lead the movement and call out turns, stairs and stops. Lift from the lower frame or designated structural areas, not from the screen, bezel edge or a thin stand. Keep the carton vertical and avoid twisting your torso while carrying it. If either person cannot control the weight, stop and arrange additional help instead of improvising.

Keep the television upright
Best Buy advises not laying a TV flat during transport. A Sony support-community moderator response dated January 21, 2020, also recommends upright transport and warns that vibration during flat transport can damage the screen. An older LG Digital Customer Care response hosted by Best Buy gives similar secondary guidance. These community and customer-care responses are not substitutes for a current model manual, but they support the conservative approach: transport the set upright unless the manufacturer specifically states otherwise.
Secure it inside the vehicle
Position the carton so its broad face is vertical and supported by a stable surface. Use surrounding cargo or suitable restraints to prevent tipping and sliding, while avoiding pressure on the panel. Do not stack heavy items on top. Check the package after the first short section of the journey and stop if it has shifted, leaned or developed a tear.

Drive smoothly, especially over speed bumps, rough roads and sharp turns. Vibration and sudden movement are reasons to immobilize the carton; they are not reasons to add tighter straps across the screen.
DIY packing or professional help?
There is no published universal size, weight or distance at which professional service becomes mandatory. Choose based on the practical conditions of your move rather than a single screen-size rule.
| Situation | DIY packing may be reasonable when… | Professional packing, delivery or installation is safer when… |
|---|---|---|
| TV size and weight | The set can be controlled by two people and its carton can be moved without twisting or scraping. | The set is too heavy or wide for two people to lift and keep upright. |
| Packaging | You can build a rigid, correctly sized cover with corner protection and enough filler to stop movement. | You cannot obtain a container that supports the frame without leaving large voids. |
| Vehicle | Your measured vehicle opening and interior allow upright, stable placement. | The TV would have to lie flat, lean against an unsafe surface or be squeezed into the vehicle. |
| Route and handling | The route is short, clear and handled by people who can coordinate the lift. | There are stairs, narrow passages, long-distance transport or several handoffs that increase handling difficulty. |
| Retailer guidance | Not applicable. | Best Buy recommends delivery and installation for TVs 65 inches or larger. This is retailer guidance, not a universal threshold. |
Professional help is particularly sensible when you cannot keep the set upright and secured, lack a helper, or cannot make a protective carton that immobilizes the television. The cited guidance does not establish a standard price or guarantee coverage from any particular service provider, so compare the service’s handling method, insurance terms and ability to transport the exact dimensions of your model.

Common mistakes and what to do instead
Using only a blanket
A blanket can be part of a layered system, but it is not a rigid outer barrier. Add cardboard, corner protection and a fitted carton or cover.
Taping directly to the TV
Tape belongs on the outer packaging. Adhesive on the display, bezel or finished housing can leave residue or damage a surface.
Leaving the stand attached without checking
Some stands are removable and some are not. Follow the model manual, and keep removed parts together so they cannot strike the screen.
Allowing empty space inside the box
A carton that is much larger than the television lets the set move during lifting and driving. Add structured filler and separators until the TV is centered and stable, without compressing the panel.
Forcing a flat transport position
Do not choose a flat position merely because it fits the vehicle. Rework the loading plan, use a larger vehicle or arrange professional delivery if upright transport cannot be achieved securely.

Assuming “fragile” solves the handling problem
Markings communicate intent but cannot prevent a package from sliding, tipping or being dropped. Physical protection and controlled handling remain essential.
Before you leave: a final safety checklist
- The model manual has been checked for stand removal and transport instructions.
- The screen is covered without pressure, and no hard or loose object touches the panel.
- All four corners and the bottom are protected.
- The carton or cardboard cover matches the TV’s dimensions closely enough to prevent movement.
- Gaps are filled, but the filler does not bow the screen or chassis.
- The carton is taped shut and has no weak, torn or open seams.
- Two people are available for every lift, with one person directing the movement.
- The vehicle has been measured and can hold the packed TV upright and secured.
- No heavy cargo is stacked on top, and the package cannot slide or tip.
- The stand, screws, remote and cables are packed separately and labeled.
If any item on this list is unresolved, delay the move and change the plan. A correctly sized carton and a second helper are usually more valuable than adding another loose layer of wrapping.
What the source guidance does—and does not—establish
Samsung Argentina’s packing page, last updated January 27, 2021, is specifically about preparing equipment for transport to Samsung service centers. It provides the clearest substitute-packaging procedure, including the 20 mm foam specification, but that specification should not be treated as a universal household standard. Its service context also means that any warranty or transport-responsibility language should not be generalized to a private move.
Best Buy’s handling guide supplies consumer advice about two-person carrying, vehicle measurement and larger-TV delivery or installation. Its vehicle suggestions are approximate, not guarantees of fit. The Sony advice is a January 21, 2020 support-community response, and the LG guidance is an older Digital Customer Care response hosted by Best Buy. For a conflict between general advice and your television’s current manual, follow the model-specific manual or contact the manufacturer.
