Duracell and Energizer both advise against it, warning that mixing brands can increase the risk of leakage; Energizer also warns that it can reduce runtime. That is a precaution, not a claim that every mixed-brand combination will fail.
Why mixing brands is discouraged
Batteries in one device may differ in condition and performance. Duracell notes that batteries can provide different lengths of life and power output depending on their composition, but does not quantify a brand-to-brand difference. Its battery-care guidance says not to mix brands, types, or old and new batteries because leakage may result. Energizer gives similar advice in its non-rechargeable battery FAQ, warning that mixing can increase leakage potential and reduce runtime. Neither source gives a numerical risk estimate or says leakage is inevitable.

What to match in the battery compartment
- Size and type: Use the size and battery type specified by the device maker. AA describes a size, not a single chemistry; do not mix types such as alkaline and zinc chloride in one compartment.
- Brand: Use one brand for the set when possible, rather than combining brands in the same device.
- Age and condition: Replace the complete set together. Do not combine fresh cells with used ones.
These are manufacturer precautions. The important distinction is not that brand name alone determines safety, but that a matched set avoids combining cells that may differ in type, age, or performance.

What to do if the batteries are already mixed
- Turn the device off first if practical.
- Remove the mixed set.
- Install a complete set of fresh batteries that matches the size and chemistry specified in the device manual.
If a battery is swollen, damaged, hot, or leaking, consult the current safety instructions from the battery and device manufacturers. Duracell provides leakage cleanup guidance on its battery-care page; follow instructions appropriate to the battery type and situation.

Can you mix rechargeable AA batteries with regular ones?
Do not mix battery types in one compartment. Use rechargeables only if the device supports their chemistry, and follow the device and charger instructions. Duracell says its chargers can charge other brands’ NiMH AA or AAA cells, but it does not guarantee those cells’ quality, safety, or performance. That guidance applies to those Duracell chargers and NiMH cells; it does not mean every charger works with every rechargeable battery. Energizer also cautions that rechargeable cells of different capacities may deliver lower-than-expected performance and reduce the lower-capacity cell’s cycle life.

Check the manual whenever the permitted battery chemistry or rechargeable compatibility is unclear. The guidance from Duracell and Energizer does not establish universal exceptions for particular electronics, so the device maker’s specified size and type should decide what goes in the compartment.
