You earn it by igniting the castle bonfire in Fortress with the Fire Transmutation ability. If you pass the area without doing it, return during post-story free roam and complete the same short route.
What the Frenzied Flame trophy requires
The requirement is exactly the one shown in the Steam achievement listing: “Ignite the bonfire in the castle.” The bonfire is in the Fortress area, not at an obvious outdoor checkpoint. You must reach the underground section beneath Fortress Chapel, find the sword planted in the floor, and cast Fire Transmutation on it.

When the fire appears, the achievement should unlock. It is a bronze trophy/achievement. Steam lists Valor Mortis with 39 achievements; at the time of the October 18, 2026 check, Frenzied Flame had a 2.5% global unlock rate. That percentage is a live figure and changes as more players reach the area.

Available trophy roadmaps agree that it is not. PowerPyx lists zero missable trophies for Valor Mortis and states that the game keeps players in free roam after the story, with earlier regions available for cleanup. PixelForge also labels Frenzied Flame “Missable No.”

There is no reported choice, ending branch, one-time item, or temporary opportunity that can lock you out of this achievement. You can continue the story, defeat the final boss, and then travel back to Fortress. The practical distinction is timing rather than missability: you need the correct area and ability, but you do not need to perform the ignition during a narrow story window.
When can you reach the bonfire?
Fortress is the relevant region
The route is in Fortress, identified by PixelForge as Chapter 9, “In Ruins.” You cannot use this route before Fortress becomes available because the Chapel fast-travel point and its underground access are part of that region.

- Acquire poison protection at the University.
Those milestones are the useful readiness check. If Fortress is not yet on your map, continue the University progression rather than searching for the bonfire in earlier zones. Once Fortress is open and you can safely handle its poisoned sections, the achievement route is available.

Best time to collect it
Collecting Frenzied Flame during your first Fortress visit avoids a later trip, but postponing it has no permanent consequence according to the available guides. Players who prefer to focus on the main path can leave it for cleanup after the final boss, when free roam returns and prior areas remain reachable.
Exact route from Fortress Chapel
Use this sequence after you have access to Fortress and the Fire Transmutation ability.
- Fast travel to Fortress > Chapel. Select the Chapel point rather than another Fortress destination so the route begins at the documented entrance.
- Enter the underground passage. From Chapel, follow the route downward until you reach the sewer room that comes after a pole jump.
- Take the left-hand door. In that sewer room, the correct exit is the door on the left.
- Turn left at the first stair landing. After entering the doorway and reaching the first staircase landing, do not continue straight; turn left.
- Descend the second staircase. Follow the next set of stairs down. This second descent is the landmark that distinguishes the bonfire route from nearby underground paths.
- Enter the room on the left. At the bottom, use the left-hand room. Inside is the sword stuck in the ground.
- Cast Fire Transmutation on the planted sword. Use the ability on the sword rather than looking for a separate interact prompt. The sword functions as the ignition point for the castle bonfire.
- Confirm the unlock. The bonfire should ignite and the Frenzied Flame trophy/achievement should trigger immediately or moments afterward.
If the unlock notification does not appear, verify that you selected the planted sword in the left room and that Fire Transmutation actually completed. Leaving the room and returning to the sword is a sensible first retry before abandoning the area.
What Fire Transmutation does in this objective
Fire Transmutation is the required ability for the interaction. The trophy is not awarded merely for reaching Fortress, entering Chapel’s underground, or examining the sewer route. The decisive action is applying Fire Transmutation to the sword embedded in the floor.

That requirement also explains why a player can arrive at the correct room and still be unable to finish the objective: location and ability are separate conditions. If the sword offers no usable result, check your ability progression and return once Fire Transmutation is available. The guide sources identify the ability by name but do not establish an alternate spell, consumable, or substitute interaction.
Can you return after finishing the story?
Yes. PowerPyx’s roadmap says the game returns you to free roam after the story and allows returns to previous areas for missing collectibles and side content. Fortress therefore remains a valid destination for Frenzied Flame cleanup after the final boss.
For a post-game attempt, use the same Fortress > Chapel fast-travel point and repeat the underground route. Nothing in the cited guidance indicates that defeating the final boss removes the sword, disables the bonfire interaction, or closes the Chapel passage.
Frenzied Flame compared with common missable-trophy concerns
Players usually worry about four separate failure modes: a chapter cutoff, a required ability that can be skipped, a branching decision, or loss of access after the ending. Frenzied Flame is favorable on each point in the available coverage.

This does not mean every Valor Mortis trophy has identical conditions. The comparison only describes the five practical checks relevant to deciding whether Frenzied Flame can be safely postponed.

Use fixed landmarks, not room names alone
The most reliable landmarks are sequential: Fortress Chapel, the pole jump, the sewer room, the left door, the first stair landing, the second staircase, and the left room with the sword. If you are standing in a room but cannot identify which staircase you used, retrace to the sewer room and restart from the left door.
Do not stop at the first staircase
The route calls for a turn at the first stair landing and then a descent of the second staircase. Treating the first stairs as the destination is a common navigation error because the objective room is reached only after the additional turn and descent.
Look for the sword in the left room
The target is a sword planted in the ground, not a freestanding brazier that must be lit with a torch or ordinary fire attack. Once you enter the left-hand room after the second staircase, center your search on the embedded sword and use the named ability.
What to do if the trophy does not unlock
- Confirm the region: Make sure you are in Fortress and started from Fortress > Chapel, not a similarly named area.
- Check the route: You should have passed the pole jump, entered the left door in the sewer room, turned left at the first stair landing, and descended the second stairs.
- Verify the target: The interaction is with the sword stuck in the ground in the room on the left.
- Verify the ability: Select Fire Transmutation and complete the cast on the sword.
- Retry from a clean approach: Leave the room, return to the sword, and activate the ability again rather than repeatedly using unrelated attacks or interactions.
- Use post-game cleanup: If you left Fortress earlier, finish the story and return through free roam; the cited roadmaps indicate that previous regions remain accessible.
The available sources do not report a separate bug, hidden collectible, or alternate trigger. Consequently, route and ability checks are the appropriate first troubleshooting steps before assuming the achievement is locked.
When should you personally collect it?
During the Fortress chapter
Choose this option if you are already exploring Chapel’s underground. It completes the objective while the location is fresh and avoids adding a cleanup stop to your post-game map.
After the final boss
Choose this option if you want to push the story forward or are following a minimalist route through Fortress. The post-story free-roam state is specifically useful for unfinished collectibles and side content, and the same state supports this trophy.
Before starting a new playthrough
If you are pursuing a complete achievement set, confirm the unlock before beginning another run. Steam’s global percentage shows that relatively few players had the achievement at the October 18, 2026 snapshot, but that statistic reflects player progress rather than a hidden difficulty requirement.

Frenzied Flame cannot be permanently missed: reach Fortress (Chapter 9), travel to Fortress > Chapel, follow the underground route to the left room after the second staircase, and cast Fire Transmutation on the planted sword; if you skip it, return during post-story free roam.
