Yes. A Cricut can make waterproof stickers when you print the design on printable vinyl, let the ink dry, cover the print with a waterproof laminate, and then use Print Then Cut. The laminate is not optional in Cricut’s waterproof-set workflow: it forms the protective top layer over the ink.
For the most predictable process, use an inkjet printer, a compatible Cricut machine, and either Cricut’s Printable Waterproof Sticker Set or printable vinyl paired with a suitable laminate. The finished stickers can resist water and UV exposure, but Cricut recommends handwashing decorated items rather than treating them as dishwasher-safe.

How the waterproof Cricut sticker method works
The sticker has three functional layers: the printable vinyl carries the design, the inkjet ink supplies the color, and the laminate seals the printed surface. Cricut’s FAQ summarizes the method as: “Use printable vinyl and add a waterproof laminate top layer before cutting.” (Cricut FAQ)

Cricut’s dedicated set packages the printable vinyl and laminating sheet together. You print only on the vinyl, allow the ink to dry, apply the laminate, and cut the combined sheet. Buying the layers separately is also possible, provided the vinyl and laminate are compatible with your printer and cutting workflow.

Check your Cricut model before starting
Print Then Cut depends on the machine’s sensor reading the registration marks around the printed page. Cricut’s instructions identify these machines for the Waterproof Sticker Set:

Step-by-step: make waterproof stickers
1. Create a Print Then Cut project
- Open Design Space and create or import the artwork.
- Set the project to Print Then Cut, not a cut-only operation. Add an offset or backing shape if you want a border around the artwork.
- Arrange the designs within the printable area shown by Design Space. Registration marks consume part of the page, so artwork placed outside the allowed area will not print or cut correctly.
2. Prepare the printer
- Use an inkjet printer. Cricut warns that laser printers use heat to fuse toner, which can damage printable material or the printer.
- For brighter, sharper results, Cricut suggests the printer’s high-quality, best-quality, or photo-paper setting. Those choices are manufacturer guidance rather than a guarantee for every printer.
- Feed one sheet at a time, or use the printer’s bypass tray when available. Confirm that the printable side is oriented correctly for your printer.
- If the ink smears, reduce the print-quality setting and test a single sheet. Printer ink formulations and drying times vary.
3. Print only on the vinyl sheet
- Identify the printable vinyl: Cricut says its sheet has a green grid and Cricut logo on the back.
- Send the Print Then Cut job and print the artwork with its registration marks.
- Do not print on the laminate sheet. It is the clear protective layer applied after printing.
- Set the printed sheet aside until the ink is fully dry. Handling it too soon can transfer or smear the image beneath the laminate.
4. Apply the laminate without trapping bubbles
- Find the laminate liner. Cricut identifies it by a QR-code sticker and a slit near one edge.
- Peel back a small section of the liner to expose only a narrow strip of adhesive laminate.
- Align that exposed edge with the printed vinyl, keeping the laminate square with the sheet.
- Press the exposed section down, then pull away more liner while smoothing the laminate forward with a brayer or soft scraper.
- Continue in small increments until the entire print is covered. Slow, overlapping passes help prevent bubbles, creases, and misalignment.
5. Load and cut the laminated sheet
- Place the finished layered sheet on a LightGrip mat in the orientation shown in Design Space. Burnish the edges lightly so the sheet lies flat.
- Select the material setting that matches the laminate finish: White, Transparent, White Holographic, or Transparent Holographic.
- Install the Fine-Point Blade and Housing, load the mat, and start the cut.
- Let the machine read the registration marks before cutting. If it cannot detect them, stop rather than forcing a cut through a misaligned page.
6. Weed and apply
- Remove the excess surrounding material after the cut. Lift a corner slowly so small stickers remain attached to their backing.
- Peel a sticker from the backing and apply it to a clean, dry surface. Smooth from the center outward to avoid lifting edges.
- Do not use transfer tape with Cricut’s Waterproof Sticker Set.

Cricut’s Printable Sticker Paper instructions are separate from the Waterproof Sticker Set instructions. The product names are similar, but plain printable sticker paper should not automatically be represented as the laminated waterproof material.

What “waterproof” and “UV resistant” mean here
Cricut’s US product page describes its Printable Waterproof Sticker Set as “Waterproof and UV resistant up to 2 years.” That is a manufacturer-stated specification for this product, not an independent test and not a universal lifespan for every printer, ink, surface, climate, or third-party laminate. See the product page for the current US listing.
Cricut’s instructions state that all versions of the Waterproof Sticker Set block UV light, while ink formulations differ and colors can fade. If fading appears, Cricut suggests using UV-resistant ink. The laminate protects the printed surface from water, but it cannot make every ink permanently colorfast outdoors.

Handwashing versus dishwasher use
Cricut recommends handwashing items decorated with these stickers. Dishwasher heat and detergents can shorten sticker life, so “waterproof” should not be upgraded to “dishwasher safe.” A sticker may tolerate splashes, condensation, or handwashing while failing sooner under sustained heat, detergent, abrasion, or repeated soaking.

Surfaces and application conditions
- Clean and dry the surface before application.
- Apply the sticker without stretching it or trapping moisture beneath the edges.
- Keep expectations realistic for heavily handled, abrasive, hot, or continuously submerged items.
- For outdoor use, treat the two-year UV statement as an upper manufacturer claim under unspecified conditions, not a guarantee for every environment.
Troubleshooting common failures
The printer smears the design
- Verify that the printer is inkjet and that you printed on the vinyl side.
- Allow more drying time before touching or laminating the sheet.
- Reduce print quality if the ink remains wet or pools on the surface, as Cricut suggests.
- Feed one sheet at a time or use a bypass tray to prevent rollers from marking wet ink.
The laminate has bubbles or wrinkles
- Peel back only a small section of liner at a time.
- Keep the laminate aligned before pressing it down.
- Smooth continuously with a brayer or soft scraper rather than dropping the full sheet at once.
- If a crease reaches the printed area, replacing the laminate sheet is usually safer than trying to cut through a visibly distorted layer.
Print Then Cut cannot find the registration marks
- Confirm that the machine model supports this material’s sensor requirement.
- Keep the printed marks unobstructed; laminate should cover the artwork but should not obscure the registration marks.
- Load the sheet on the mat in the same orientation shown in Design Space.
- Check that the selected material and project type are correct before recalibrating or retrying.
The cut is offset from the artwork
- Make sure the laminated sheet has not shifted or lifted on the mat.
- Verify that the correct page size and printer scaling were used; disable “fit to page” if it changes the printed dimensions.
- Run Print Then Cut calibration in Design Space if the machine consistently misses the same distance.
Practical decision guide
- Choose the dedicated set when you want Cricut’s matched vinyl-and-laminate workflow and a finish-specific material setting.
- Choose separate materials when you already have printable vinyl or need a particular laminate finish, but check compatibility before combining products.
- Use ordinary printable sticker paper only when water resistance is not the requirement or when that product’s own instructions explicitly cover your intended use.
- Choose hand-wash applications such as labeled bottles, bins, notebooks, and craft projects where the sticker is exposed to occasional water but not dishwasher cycles.
Bottom line
A Cricut can produce waterproof stickers, but the reliable method is a laminated Print Then Cut process: inkjet-print the design on printable vinyl, let it dry, apply the laminate gradually, and cut it on a compatible machine. The set is water-resistant and UV-protective according to Cricut’s specifications, with UV resistance stated up to two years; handwashing remains the recommended care method.
