Yes. You can make a modern game’s image resemble an older console or arcade display by applying post-processing shaders, using an engine’s pixel-perfect renderer, running an emulator shader, or placing compatible video hardware between the source and display. These techniques change the picture you see; they do not automatically replace the game’s original models, textures, animation, physics, or level design.
The convincing result comes from matching several cues—resolution, scaling, phosphor structure, color behavior and, when possible, era-specific geometry—rather than adding a single black-line overlay.

What “make it look older” can mean
People usually mean one of two different jobs. A display treatment makes a modern frame look as if it is being viewed on an older screen. A rendering conversion changes how the game is drawn so that it uses period-typical pixels, models, textures or animation limits. The first can often be done by a player with a shader or scaler. The second normally requires developer access, a mod, or a game that exposes a retro graphics mode.

A CRT-style treatment can add scanlines, curvature, bloom, color bleed, phosphor stripes or a shadow-mask pattern. It cannot, by itself, turn detailed modern geometry into the low-polygon models of a 1990s console, impose sprite-size limits from an 8-bit system, or recreate texture warping and vertex wobble that came from older 3D hardware. Those traits are produced earlier in the rendering pipeline.

Four practical ways to apply a retro look
1. Inject a shader on a compatible PC game
On Windows, a post-processing injector can capture a game’s rendered frame and apply effects before the image reaches the monitor. ReShade describes itself as “a generic post-processing injector for games and video software.” Its shaders can use frame color and, where available, depth data, making it suitable for CRT masks, bloom, color adjustments, grain and other treatments.
A typical setup is:
- Download the injector from its official distribution channel and run the installer.
- Select the game’s executable, then choose the graphics API the game actually uses. If you select the wrong executable or API, the overlay may never appear.
- Install a small starting set of effects rather than every available shader.
- Launch the game and open the injector’s in-game overlay. The default hotkey can vary; the installer or overlay shows the active key.
- Enable one CRT preset, then adjust scaling, mask strength, scanline intensity and curvature while standing in a consistent scene.
- Save a profile for that executable and keep a second profile with all effects disabled for troubleshooting.
Use this route only where the game, platform rules and anti-cheat policy permit third-party injection. Competitive titles can block injectors or treat them as an integrity risk, and a game update can change the rendering path enough to break an otherwise working profile. If the overlay fails, test the game’s non-anti-cheat mode (when the publisher provides one), disable other overlays, confirm the executable path and try a simple color effect before adding depth-dependent shaders.
2. Use the game’s own engine-level pixel workflow
When you are developing a game—or when its menu exposes the relevant options—an engine-level workflow is more robust than an external injector. Unity’s pixel-perfect workflow keeps rendering aligned to a chosen pixel grid and can be combined with post-processing; Unity has specifically described its Post Processing Stack as able to add “all sorts of cool retro screen effects.”
Pixel-perfect rendering addresses the source image rather than merely putting a filter over a finished frame. A developer can choose a reference resolution, keep sprites aligned to integer pixels, apply consistent camera scaling and then add a CRT treatment. Players benefit only when the game ships those controls; installing Unity tools cannot retrofit them into an unrelated commercial game.

For a PS1-inspired result, the developer may also deliberately lower mesh precision, use affine-like texture behavior, reduce texture resolution and introduce controlled vertex movement. For an SNES-style result, the important decisions are usually a fixed low-resolution canvas, limited palette behavior, tile or sprite constraints and integer scaling. These are design and rendering changes, not settings that a universal screen filter can infer.
3. Apply a CRT shader in an emulator
Emulators such as those using the Libretro shader system can process the emulated frame before output. Libretro documents CRT shaders as attempts to reproduce “aspects and characteristics of cathode ray tube (CRT) displays.” This is especially useful when the original game already has the correct sprite limits, palette logic or console geometry and you only want the display presentation.
Start with integer scaling when the emulator offers it. Libretro notes that integer scaling generally improves repeating scanline-type effects because each source pixel receives a stable number of output pixels. Non-integer scaling can make scanlines vary in thickness and soften pixel edges unevenly. After enabling integer scaling, select a preset that models a phosphor mask or grille, then adjust curvature, bloom and brightness to suit your display.
CRT shaders can be demanding. Libretro warns that some are very demanding and may make weak hardware run slowly. If emulation speed drops, disable secondary passes such as heavy beam simulation, reduce the internal scale, choose a lighter preset or lower the display resolution. Measure latency as well as frame rate: a visually impressive chain is not useful if it makes action controls feel delayed.

4. Put a video scaler in the display chain
Hardware is the practical answer for consoles, handheld docks and other locked-down systems where software injection is unavailable. A scaler receives the rendered signal, processes it and sends a new signal to the display. RetroTINK-5X Pro firmware documentation lists scanline, slot-mask, aperture-grille, PVM and LCD-overlay options, allowing one device to apply a chosen presentation across several sources.
This method changes the signal after the console has rendered it, so it cannot add period-specific geometry or alter a game’s assets. Its strengths are repeatability, broad source coverage and independence from a particular PC game API. Check the scaler’s supported input and output formats, firmware behavior and any added processing delay before buying or installing one. Current pricing and stock vary by region and date, so verify the present listing rather than relying on an old figure.
Which visual ingredients make the illusion convincing?
Resolution and integer scaling
Begin with a deliberate output resolution. A lower apparent resolution creates clear pixel boundaries, but reducing a modern frame too far can make text unreadable. Integer scaling—doubling, tripling or otherwise multiplying the source pixels by whole numbers—keeps edges consistent. If your display cannot fit an exact integer multiple, leave a clean border rather than allowing uneven resampling across the image.

Simple horizontal black lines often look like a social-media effect rather than a CRT. Real displays combined line structure with a phosphor layout. A slot mask, aperture grille or shadow-mask pattern gives bright areas a repeating color structure. Keep the mask subtle at normal viewing distance; excessive strength produces a dark grid and crushes detail.

Softness, bloom and color behavior
Older displays spread bright pixels into neighboring areas. A small amount of blur, bloom and color bleed can reproduce that interaction, while too much turns the image into fog. Lower contrast slightly, preserve shadow detail and adjust saturation after the mask is in place. Add grain only if it supports the chosen era; random noise is not a substitute for phosphor behavior.
Curvature, geometry and edge treatment
Curvature and a darkened bezel can suggest a consumer television. Arcade monitors and professional video monitors had different characteristics, so use the shape that fits your target. A flat LCD-overlay preset may be preferable when you want scanlines without pretending the panel is curved.
Era-specific rendering
To suggest a PS1-era 3D game, the strongest cues are low-poly silhouettes, small textures, texture warping, vertex wobble and deliberately limited draw distance. To suggest SNES software, fixed-resolution sprites, palette constraints and tile-based composition matter more than curvature. Arcade presentation may call for a tight pixel grid, strong scanline structure and a cabinet-like aspect ratio. These cues require source-level rendering or assets; a display shader can only approximate them by degrading the final image.

Choosing the right method
| Method | Best fit | Control | Reversibility | Performance and latency | What it changes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC post-processing injector | Compatible PC games | Very broad: masks, bloom, color, curvature and more | High; disable the profile | Usually modest, but depth and multi-pass shaders can cost performance; anti-cheat compatibility must be checked | Final presentation only |
| Engine-level pixel workflow | Games you develop or titles exposing retro settings | Highest, including pixel grid, assets and geometry | Depends on the game’s graphics options | Can be optimized with the game; implementation quality varies | Rendering pipeline and, if designed that way, assets and geometry |
| Libretro emulator shader | Emulated console and arcade software | Preset-dependent, with detailed CRT controls available | High; switch presets or turn shaders off | Some CRT presets are demanding; integer scaling can improve stability of scanline patterns | Emulated output presentation |
| External video scaler | Original consoles and systems that cannot run shaders | Firmware-menu options such as scanlines, masks, grille and LCD overlays | High; bypass or change the scaler mode | Depends on the scaler’s processing path and source format | Video signal after the console renders it |
Choose a PC injector when you want per-game experimentation and your platform allows it. Choose an engine workflow when you control the project or the developer has built in a pixel mode. Choose an emulator shader when the original software is already being emulated. Choose hardware when the source is a console or another device you cannot modify.

A reliable setup sequence
- Define the target era. Decide whether you are imitating a consumer CRT, a professional monitor, an arcade cabinet, PS1-style 3D, SNES-style 2D or only a general “retro” mood.
- Capture a clean baseline. Disable existing filters and note the game’s native resolution, aspect ratio and frame pacing. This gives you a comparison point if an effect introduces blur or latency.
- Set scaling first. Use the correct aspect ratio and integer scaling where possible. Fixing geometry later can invalidate every other adjustment.
- Add the display structure. Enable scanlines together with a mask or grille. Reduce intensity until bright areas retain detail.
- Tune optical effects. Add small amounts of softness, bloom, bleed and curvature. Change one parameter at a time and test both dark and bright scenes.
- Check text and motion. Read menus, rotate the camera and test fast movement. If text shimmers or controls feel delayed, reduce shader passes or disable the heaviest effect.
- Save separate profiles. Keep an untouched profile, a lightweight profile for play and a stronger profile for screenshots or video.
Common problems and fixes
The game will not start or the overlay is missing
Undo the injector changes, confirm that you selected the actual game executable and graphics API, then test with a single basic effect. Disable conflicting overlays and check whether the title’s anti-cheat system prohibits injection. A game patch may require reinstalling or reconfiguring the profile.
The image is blurry or uneven
Verify the aspect ratio and switch to integer scaling. Non-integer scaling spreads source pixels across unequal numbers of display pixels, which can make alternating lines or sprites appear to shimmer. Reduce blur and bloom after scaling is correct.
The mask is too dark
Lower mask strength before raising overall brightness. A heavy slot-mask or grille pattern can remove more light than expected and hide shadow detail. Recheck the result in a bright scene and a dark scene rather than calibrating from one screenshot.
Emulation slows down
Choose a lighter CRT preset, disable expensive beam or multi-pass effects, reduce internal resolution and confirm that frame pacing—not only the displayed frame-rate counter—has recovered.
The result looks like a filter, not an older game
That usually means the source rendering still looks modern. A display treatment cannot supply low-poly geometry, sprite limits, texture warping, period animation or level-design conventions. Use a game with a built-in retro renderer, a suitable mod, or a project whose assets and rendering pipeline were designed for that era.
What to expect from a “PS1,” “SNES” or “arcade” preset
Those labels describe families of visual conventions, not a single universal recipe. A PS1 preset can suggest texture wobble and low-resolution output, but it does not recreate every hardware quirk. An SNES preset can reproduce a fixed pixel grid and restrained palette treatment, yet it cannot impose authentic sprite priorities on a fully 3D scene. An arcade preset may mimic a mask and cabinet aspect ratio while leaving modern lighting and geometry untouched.
The most honest goal is therefore older-looking presentation, unless the game itself changes its assets and renderer. Build the effect around the source you have, keep the transformation reversible and treat performance, anti-cheat rules and latency as part of the design rather than afterthoughts.
