Possibly, but public-domain status does not guarantee that YouTube will let a livestream run uninterrupted or keep its archive free of a Content ID claim. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream if matched material remains. If you archive the stream, a claim may arrive after it ends. Check the specific film version and every included element before broadcasting.
What can happen during and after the livestream
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If its systems identify a match, a warning may appear; if the content remains, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and interrupt or terminate the broadcast. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the live stream is complete. So a stream that finishes without interruption is not necessarily clear of a later claim. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

YouTube lists public-domain footage, recordings, and compositions as ineligible Content ID references. That rule does not guarantee that a particular movie file is free of claims or that it will avoid live matching. YouTube also cautions that determining public-domain status can be complicated and that none of its listed safe-use options guarantees avoidance of a claim. See Content eligible for Content ID and Copyright on YouTube.

A film’s underlying story or original release may be in the public domain while a particular copy includes material with a different rights status. Check the file you intend to stream, rather than relying only on the film’s age, a label on a video page, or the status of the underlying work.
#1 Best Overall
- Identify the copy. Record the film’s title, the source file or disc, and who supplied it.
- Check the work in relevant territories. Public-domain rules vary by country or region, and YouTube says there is no official complete list of works in the public domain.
- Review the specific version. Check for a newer restoration, transfer, colorization, subtitles, added narration, or other material, as well as the soundtrack. Each element may need its own rights check.
- Keep evidence. Retain source details and records supporting your basis for using the film and its included elements. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights for the live content on Google services, including music rights.
The movie, its source, publication history, version, and intended viewing territories all matter. Without those details, it is not possible to determine whether a specific film file is public domain everywhere your stream may be available.
Decide whether to keep an archive
If you archive the livestream, the completed video may receive a Content ID claim after the event. Decide in advance whether keeping the archive is important to you, and do not treat a successful live broadcast as proof that the recording is clear. The choice to archive changes this post-stream exposure; it does not establish the rights status of the movie.

Understand claims, blocks, and strikes
A Content ID claim is different from a copyright removal request and a copyright strike. Depending on the matched material and the claimant’s policy, a claim can monetize, track, or block a video, sometimes only in certain territories. A claim by itself is not a strike. YouTube explains these outcomes in Learn about copyright claims.

You can leave a claim in place, remove the matched segment where that option is available, or dispute it if you have a valid basis. Owning a copy, giving credit, or choosing not to monetize are not, by themselves, valid reasons to dispute.

When and how to dispute a claim
A dispute may be appropriate if you have the necessary rights or believe the match is mistaken. If relying on public-domain status, use evidence about the specific work, version, included elements, and relevant territories. If the match is mistaken, document why the claimed segment does not contain the reference material. YouTube’s claim-dispute guidance says YouTube does not mediate copyright disputes or decide whether fair use or another copyright exception applies. Consider legal advice if the rights question is uncertain; disputing without a sound basis can create additional risk.
