Usually, yes—but keeping a save does not automatically keep the right to play. A “free-to-play period” might mean a timed trial of one game, temporary access through a subscription catalog, or a promotional demo. Each offer can use different save, account and expiration rules. Treat these as three separate questions: Is my save still stored? Can I transfer it to the version I will use next? and Do I still have a license to launch the game?
For example, PlayStation says progress from a limited EA Play trial carries over when you purchase the game, while Ubisoft says games become unavailable when free termed access expires and saved progression is retained only for games that support cloud saves or when you keep the local save files. The exact game, platform, account and offer determine your result.

What “free-to-play period” can mean
The phrase is not a single technical category. Before you assume anything about your save, identify which kind of access is ending.

A label such as “free weekend,” “trial,” or “free access” does not by itself promise a transferable save. Read the offer terms for the exact title and platform.

Save, access and transfer are different questions
1. Is the save still stored?
A save can be in a platform’s cloud, on the device’s local storage, or in the game publisher’s own online account. Ending a trial usually removes the entitlement to launch the game; it does not necessarily erase data. Deleting the game application also does not always delete its save, but manually removing local data can.
2. Can the next version read it?
A save is useful only if the version you install can recognize it. The same title on the same platform is the most reliable match. A different platform, region, generation, edition or account can use a separate save format or have no transfer path at all. Do not infer cross-platform compatibility from the fact that your friends can play together or that your account is linked.
3. Do you still have a license to launch?
Keeping a save does not extend a trial or subscription. When the entitlement ends, the launcher can block the game until you purchase it or renew access. A preserved save may therefore be dormant until the correct license is restored.

What official policies establish
Limited EA Play trials on PlayStation
PlayStation’s EA Play trial guidance gives a clear example of a timed trial. It states: “Yes, after your limited trial of the latest EA games ends, your progress will carry over. You can continue where you left off if you decide to purchase the game.” The trial ends your free access, so purchasing the game is required to keep playing. The statement applies to the covered EA Play trials on PlayStation; it is not a universal promise for every game service or platform. See the PlayStation EA Play trial guidance.
Ubisoft free termed access
Ubisoft’s free-termed-access terms separate availability from saved progression: “the games will become unavailable, but your saved progression will be kept for games that support cloud saves or if you keep your local saved files.” In practice, the game can disappear from your playable library while the data remains in the cloud or on your device. The wording also makes the limitation explicit: retention is not guaranteed for games without cloud-save support when the local files are not preserved. Renewing a Ubisoft subscription
Ubisoft’s Subscription Terms 2.0 say: “Should you not have purchased the game outside of Ubisoft+, Ubisoft may, at its sole discretion, choose to save your progression and/or any in-game purchases should you decide to later renew your Subscription.” “May” and “at its sole discretion” mean this is not an unconditional retention guarantee. EA Play included with Game Pass
EA Help says EA Play is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, with different platform coverage, and that Core and Standard do not include EA Play on that page. This confirms which subscription tier may provide access; it does not define the save rule for every EA title. Do these checks while the trial or subscription still launches the game. You are trying to preserve the original data and confirm the route back into it.
- Record the exact offer. Write down the service name, game title, edition, platform, account and expiration date. “Ultimate,” “PC,” console and cloud versions can have different entitlements.
- Open the game’s official support page. Search for the title plus “save transfer,” “cloud save,” “trial,” or “subscription.” Confirm whether the trial build and purchased build use the same save.
- Verify the account currently signed in. Note the platform account and the publisher account shown in the game. Do not switch profiles before the final save has synchronized.
- Make a final in-game save. Reach a normal checkpoint or use the game’s manual-save command, then wait for its save or synchronization indicator to finish. A suspended application may not have uploaded its newest progress.
- Confirm cloud synchronization. Check the platform’s saved-data screen or the game launcher’s cloud-status message. If synchronization reports a conflict, stop and resolve it deliberately; choosing the wrong copy can overwrite newer progress.
- Preserve local files when the game uses them. Do not uninstall or delete saved data until you know the files are backed up. On a computer, identify the game’s documented save folder and copy it to a separate location without editing the files.
- Capture account and edition details. Record the store region, console generation, product edition and any linked publisher ID. These details help support staff match the save to the entitlement you later buy.
- Decide whether to renew or purchase. If you want uninterrupted access, renew before expiry. If you will buy the game, verify that the product page names the same platform and edition covered by the save policy.
What to expect when the period ends
If you purchase the same game on the same platform
This is the scenario most likely to resume cleanly. Install or unlock the matching edition, sign in to the original platform and game accounts, and start the game. If the title supports shared cloud saves, the existing data should be offered automatically. A trial policy such as PlayStation’s EA Play guidance expressly promises carryover for the covered games, but you still need the purchase to regain the launch right.

If you renew the subscription
Renewing restores the subscription entitlement, not necessarily every historical save. Services can limit retention by title or reserve discretion, as Ubisoft’s terms do. Use the same account, platform and service region, then allow the launcher to synchronize before starting a new game. If the game presents a choice between local and cloud data, select the copy with the latest timestamp and confirm that it contains your recent checkpoint.
If you buy on another platform
Do not assume the save follows you. Cross-progression must be documented by the game, and cross-save may differ from cross-play. A publisher account link can be required, and some items or achievements may not transfer even when campaign progress does. If the official page does not explicitly list your two platforms and the relevant account system, treat transfer as unconfirmed.

Standard, deluxe, remastered and next-generation editions can store data differently. Some titles provide an import tool; others treat each edition as a separate game. Confirm the exact product SKU, generation and region before purchasing. Buying a similarly named version is not proof that it can read the old save.

“Cloud save” is not a synonym for “cross-platform save.” It only describes where data is stored. The game still decides which platforms and editions may read it.
Troubleshooting when your progress is missing
The game starts at the beginning
- Close the game completely and reopen it with the original platform and publisher accounts.
- Check whether the launcher is offline or still downloading cloud data.
- Look for a manual “download,” “restore,” or “choose save” option before creating a new save.
- Confirm that you purchased or renewed the same title, edition, region and platform covered by the policy.
You see a cloud-save conflict
- Do not accept a replacement copy automatically.
- Compare timestamps, device names and playtime if shown.
- Keep the newer copy, then make a fresh manual save and allow synchronization to complete.
- If both copies matter, back up the local file first and contact the game’s support team with the account and timestamps.
The game is unavailable after expiry
This can be normal rather than evidence of deletion. Ubisoft’s free-termed-access wording specifically says games become unavailable after access expires. Restore the entitlement by purchasing the matching game or renewing the qualifying subscription, then check for the preserved save.
You changed accounts or platforms
Stop creating new saves on the new setup until you confirm transfer support. Sign back into the original account, verify the original save exists, and read the title-specific cross-progression instructions. Support cannot necessarily merge saves from two unrelated accounts.

A practical decision checklist
- One-game trial: look for an explicit carryover statement and plan to purchase the same platform version.
- Subscription catalog: verify both the service’s retention terms and the game’s cloud-save support; renewal may be safer than assuming indefinite storage.
- Local-only save: preserve the device and back up the documented save files before uninstalling.
- Cloud save: confirm the final synchronization and retain the original account.
- Different platform: require an official cross-progression statement naming both platforms; otherwise assume the save will not transfer.
- Different edition: check the edition and generation explicitly before buying.
The safest general rule is simple: finish a normal save, confirm it has synchronized, keep the original accounts and local files, and verify the exact game’s policy before access expires. A preserved save can wait for you, but only the correct license and a supported version can make it playable again.
