What stops is Microsoft’s routine delivery of operating-system security fixes, feature updates and covered technical assistance. Windows 10 version 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. You can continue using the computer, but the unsupported system is more exposed to malware and viruses. Your practical choices are to upgrade an eligible PC to Windows 11, use eligible consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) temporarily, or replace the computer with a Windows 11-compatible PC.
What actually happens when Windows security updates end?
End of support is not a shutdown switch. Your files, installed programs, desktop and ordinary Windows functions remain available. You can sign in, browse, print, connect peripherals and run existing applications as before, provided those applications and your hardware still support them.

The change is Microsoft’s update commitment. For Windows 10 version 22H2 after October 14, 2025, Microsoft no longer provides the normal stream of operating-system security updates, feature updates and technical assistance. Newly discovered weaknesses can therefore remain unpatched in the Windows components that attackers commonly target.

Microsoft describes the consequence in qualitative terms: a PC without continued software and security updates is at greater risk from viruses and malware. That does not mean every unsupported computer will be compromised, and there is no reliable percentage that predicts an individual user’s probability. It means the security margin declines over time as new vulnerabilities are found and supported systems receive fixes that Windows 10 no longer receives.

Can you keep using Windows 10 safely enough?
You can keep using it, but “still runs” and “still receives full security protection” are different conditions. Continuing without operating-system fixes is a risk decision. A low-impact offline machine used for old software has a different exposure from a daily-use PC that handles email, banking, work documents and downloads.
If you continue temporarily, reduce exposure while arranging a supported path:
- Install every remaining update offered for Windows 10 and for your applications.
- Keep Microsoft Defender or another reputable antivirus product enabled and current.
- Use a modern, supported browser and remove software you no longer need.
- Use separate, strong passwords and multifactor authentication for important accounts.
- Back up personal files regularly to storage that is not permanently connected.
- Avoid unknown downloads, cracked software, unexpected attachments and links that request credentials.
- Do not treat an antivirus alert-free status as proof that the operating system is fully protected.
Will my Windows 10 computer stop working?
No. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to function after support ends. The end date does not erase the operating system or automatically disable your hardware. Some third-party applications, browsers, drivers or online services may eventually set their own support deadlines, so practical compatibility can deteriorate independently of Windows itself.

How to check whether your PC can move to Windows 11
Microsoft’s first recommended path is an upgrade on an eligible existing PC. Use the device’s Windows Update page to see whether Windows 11 is offered. You can also use Microsoft’s PC Health Check flow to review compatibility when the upgrade is not shown.
- Open Settings and select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Review the Windows 11 upgrade message, if one appears, and follow the compatibility and installation prompts.
- If Windows Update does not offer the upgrade, run the PC Health Check compatibility assessment and read the specific reason for any failure.
- Before installing, make a current backup and confirm that critical applications, printers and other peripherals have Windows 11 support.
An ineligible result is not a diagnosis that the computer is unusable; it means Microsoft’s supported upgrade requirements are not met. Installing Windows 11 by bypassing requirements can create support, driver and update problems, so the supported choices are usually ESU for a limited period or replacement.
Your three supported paths after Windows 10 support ends
| Path | Best fit | What it provides | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade the eligible PC to Windows 11 | Hardware passes Microsoft’s compatibility checks | A supported operating system on the computer you already own | Installation may require preparation, and older applications or peripherals may need checking |
| Consumer Extended Security Updates | Personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 device that is eligible in its market | Critical and important Windows security updates for a limited period | It is not full Windows support; enrollment rules, availability and end dates require verification |
| Buy a Windows 11 PC | Current hardware is ineligible, unreliable or no longer meets your needs | A new device designed for the supported Windows 11 environment | Purchase, setup and data migration cost more than continuing with existing hardware |
How consumer Extended Security Updates work
Microsoft’s detailed consumer FAQ says eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 devices can receive critical and important security updates through October 13, 2026. Consumer eligibility is intended for personal-use devices in most markets. Organization-managed devices and enterprise-licensed devices are excluded from those consumer terms.

ESU is a bridge, not a restoration of the normal Windows 10 lifecycle. It does not turn the PC into a fully supported current platform, and it should not be confused with feature updates, general technical assistance or a guarantee that every application will remain compatible.
Why Microsoft’s ESU dates need checking
Microsoft pages currently show conflicting consumer time frames. The detailed consumer FAQ specifies coverage through October 13, 2026, while an end-of-support overview describes consumer ESU protection until October 12, 2027. The published pages do not explain the discrepancy. Treat neither date as a universal promise: open the current ESU enrollment screen for your particular device and location, and read the terms displayed there before relying on coverage.
Can antivirus replace Windows security updates?
No. Antivirus remains useful, but it covers a different layer of the system. Microsoft’s Windows end-of-support guidance states: “While antivirus software—like Microsoft Defender or third-party tools—can help, it’s not enough on its own.” Antivirus can detect or block many malicious files and behaviours; it cannot rewrite an unpatched Windows kernel, networking component or system service when Microsoft has stopped issuing the underlying fix.
Keep antivirus enabled if you continue using Windows 10, but combine it with safer browsing, application updates, backups and a plan to move to a supported operating system. Paying for a different antivirus product does not extend Windows 10’s support lifecycle.

What happens to Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10?
Microsoft 365 application support is separate from Windows support. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps continue to function on Windows 10 and receive security updates through October 10, 2028. That statement applies to the applications, not to the Windows 10 operating system underneath them.
Microsoft recommends upgrading the operating system to avoid performance and reliability problems over time. An Office or Microsoft 365 security update cannot patch vulnerabilities in Windows components, so continued application updates should not be interpreted as continued Windows security coverage.
When replacing the computer is the sensible choice
A new Windows 11 laptop or desktop is one option, not a requirement for every person on October 14, 2025. Replacement becomes more compelling when the existing PC fails compatibility checks, is already unreliable, lacks required security hardware, or would cost too much to repair and migrate.
Before buying, verify the specifications needed for your work, the ports used by your peripherals, available storage and memory, and whether your applications support Windows 11. Plan the migration rather than treating the purchase as an instant fix: copy documents, export browser data where appropriate, reinstall applications from trusted sources and securely wipe or recycle the old machine after confirming that the new one contains everything you need.
Microsoft’s guidance discusses new Windows PCs and names manufacturers such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung, along with retailers such as Best Buy. Those names describe common purchasing channels; they do not change the security decision or establish that any particular model is suitable for your requirements.
A decision checklist for your own PC
- Identify the edition and version. Open Settings > System > About and confirm that the device is Windows 10 version 22H2. Special editions and organizational licensing can follow different lifecycle rules.
- Check Windows Update. If Windows 11 is offered, review compatibility, backups and application requirements before accepting the upgrade.
- Run PC Health Check if needed. Use the result to distinguish a supported upgrade from hardware that requires another path.
- Assess your exposure. A computer used for financial accounts, business access or sensitive personal data deserves a faster move to supported Windows than an occasionally used offline machine.
- Check ESU locally. Open the enrollment interface and confirm eligibility, price or points requirement, covered dates and whether the device is managed or enterprise-licensed.
- Set a deadline. If you choose ESU, treat it as time to migrate, upgrade or replace rather than as a permanent solution.
- Back up and test recovery. Confirm that you can restore essential files before an upgrade or hardware change.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for the PC to stop. It may continue running while becoming progressively harder to defend.
- Assuming a browser update patches Windows. It improves the browser only; operating-system vulnerabilities remain a separate issue.
- Confusing Microsoft 365 updates with Windows updates. Application support through October 10, 2028 does not extend Windows 10 OS support.
- Assuming ESU terms are worldwide or permanent. Consumer availability and enrollment conditions vary by market, and Microsoft’s published end dates conflict.
- Using consumer ESU rules for a work-managed PC. Organization-managed and enterprise-licensed devices require their own licensing and lifecycle guidance.
- Replacing a PC without a migration plan. Hardware purchase alone does not transfer files, licences, passwords or specialized drivers.
The practical answer
You can keep using Windows after security updates end, and the computer will not suddenly stop working. The cost is accepting greater exposure because Windows itself no longer receives the ordinary security fixes that address newly discovered threats. Check Windows 11 eligibility first. If the PC cannot be upgraded, verify whether consumer ESU is available for your personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 device and use the current enrollment terms rather than relying on conflicting published dates. Replace the computer when compatibility, reliability or risk makes that the better value. Antivirus and Microsoft 365 updates can reduce some risks or preserve application functionality, but neither substitutes for a supported Windows operating system.
