Any crack in the visible glass, or an edge that can cut your finger, is a stop-using condition. Do not keep opening and closing the phone to see whether the crack changes. The movement can expose more of the damaged area, and contact with a sharp edge can injure you.

Bubbling, lifting, or worn cover layer
A bubble, crease, or section that is lifting may be damage to the separate inner cover layer rather than the flexible display itself. Apple hardware engineering vice president Kate Bergeron was reported by MacRumors as saying that this cover layer is “actually replaceable” through service. That statement indicates a possible repair path; it does not confirm that a particular phone’s panel is unharmed or authorize owner removal.
Black pixels, lines, or dead touch
A spreading black area, persistent lines, flickering, or a region that no longer responds to touch can indicate damage below the cover layer. Treat these symptoms as more than a cosmetic defect and avoid folding or unfolding until the phone has been inspected.
Hinge or frame symptoms
A hinge that feels tight, gritty, catches, sits unevenly, or no longer aligns the two halves can place additional stress on the inner display. Misalignment, a raised frame, or a panel that does not lie flat also needs professional assessment before normal use.

Why continued use is risky
Cracked glass can injure fingers, which is why Apple’s safety guidance specifically says not to use an iPhone with cracked glass. A damaged foldable display also has moving parts and a flexible panel that experience repeated bending. Continued folding can turn a small cover-layer defect into panel or hinge damage, although the exact failure depends on the phone’s condition.
Touching or pressing a lifted section can enlarge the separation and introduce debris. Applying heat, adhesive, or pressure can distort the cover layer and make later service harder. An improper repair can affect safety, cause overheating, or create injury risks; Apple therefore recommends a professional repair provider with certified technicians and genuine Apple parts.
What to do immediately
- Stop touching the damaged area. Keep fingers away from sharp, cracked, or lifting edges.
- Leave the phone in the least stressful position. If the hinge feels abnormal or the screen is separating, do not repeatedly fold or unfold it.
- Do not attempt a home repair. Do not peel the layer, cut it, puncture bubbles, flatten it, apply generic film, add adhesive, or use heat.
- Back up your data if handling is safe. Do this only while the phone remains stable and you can avoid the damaged area. If touch is unreliable, use an already trusted backup method rather than pressing the defect.
- Contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Describe the exact symptom: cracked glass, bubbling or lifting, dead touch, black pixels, lines, hinge resistance, or enclosure misalignment.
- Follow the service provider’s handling instructions. Ask whether the phone should remain open, closed, powered on, or powered off while you transport it.
Can you use it temporarily when only the cover layer looks worn?
There is no safe blanket approval for continued use. If the visible problem is only wear or a small bubble, with no crack, no exposed sharp edge, normal touch response, and a hinge that moves normally, a technician may determine that the panel is intact and that a cover-layer replacement is appropriate. Until that inspection, minimize handling and avoid pressing the affected area.

Do not interpret normal operation as proof that the panel is safe. A cover layer can hide damage to the flexible display, hinge, or enclosure. The distinction can require inspection under controlled conditions, so a phone that still displays an image should not automatically be treated as fit for everyday folding.

The reported statement that the inner cover layer is replaceable is useful because it shows that a full display assembly may not always be necessary. It is not a promise that every lifting layer qualifies, and it does not establish a universal price or turnaround time.

There is no single iPhone Duo inner-screen price that applies everywhere. Before authorizing work, ask the provider to identify the damaged component, state whether the proposed repair is cover-only or a complete assembly, and explain any deductible or out-of-warranty charge. If the inspection finds hinge or enclosure damage, ask whether that work is required for safe operation or is an optional additional repair.

What not to put on the inner display
- Generic foldable screen protectors: Do not cover a lifting or damaged layer with another film. Added adhesive and pressure can conceal the defect and complicate inspection.
- Household tape or glue: Adhesive can migrate into the fold area and leave residue that a technician must remove.
- Heat: Do not warm the screen to soften adhesive or flatten a bubble. Heat can damage the flexible display and other components.
- Tools or fingernails: Do not lift, trim, puncture, or scrape the layer.
- Pressure while folding: Do not force the phone flat or press the two halves together to make the surface look even.

Record the symptoms without stressing the phone
Write down when the problem appeared and what you can observe without repeatedly flexing the device. Protect your information
