Can You Keep Using a TP-Link Router You Already Own?

Sometimes—but the router’s age is not the deciding factor. Identify the exact TP-Link model and hardware version, check the support and end-of-life (EOL) information for the region where it was purchased, and verify whether security firmware exists for that specific version. A legacy router with an applicable patch may remain usable; an unsupported, unpatched router has a security problem that changing settings cannot repair.

TP-Link says affected legacy devices should be replaced with supported hardware that receives regular security updates when no fix is available. The decision below is model-specific, not a blanket judgment that every older TP-Link router is unsafe.

Start with the exact model, hardware version, and region

Two routers with nearly identical names can have different hardware revisions, firmware files, and support timelines. Do not decide based only on when you bought the router or how old the product line looks.

1. Read the label on the router

Turn the unit over and record the complete model name and hardware version exactly as printed. The label may show a value such as “Ver: 1.0,” “V2,” or “Hardware Version: 3.” TP-Link says that when no version is shown, the device should be treated as version 1 (v1).

Write down the model and version before opening a download page. A model without its hardware revision is not enough to select safe firmware.

2. Use the support site for the purchase region

Go to TP-Link’s support pages for the country or region where the router was purchased. TP-Link warns that regional firmware, including US and EU releases, is not interchangeable. A file with the same model name can still be the wrong build for your device.

If the router was imported, use the documentation and support region that matches the hardware’s actual market rather than assuming your current location determines compatibility. When in doubt, contact TP-Link support before installing a file.

Check support status and the EOL listing

TP-Link’s current US EOL page, updated September 21, 2026, defines EOL as the end of production for a model or a particular hardware version. The list can change without notice, and model availability differs by region.

EOL does not mean the router stops working on a particular day. It does mean you need to verify maintenance and security-update status instead of assuming more firmware will arrive. A router can continue routing traffic after production ends, but its future security coverage may be limited or finished.

What to look for on the support page

  • Whether your exact model and hardware version still appear in the regional product catalog.
  • The date and version of the newest firmware release.
  • Release notes that identify security fixes, bug fixes, or a final maintenance release.
  • Any notice that support or production has ended for that version.

Do not infer support from another country’s page. TP-Link’s lifecycle information is regional, so a model listed in the United States may not have the same availability or update path elsewhere.

Check the vulnerability advisory for your specific version

TP-Link’s May 12, 2026 advisory addresses CVE-2023-50224. It lists affected model-and-version combinations and gives each one a remediation state such as patched, partially patched, or unpatched. The advisory is not a complete history of every security issue affecting every TP-Link router; it is a model-specific notice for this vulnerability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find your exact combination in the advisory and follow the fixed firmware version listed for your region when one is available. Do not assume that every unit in a product family received the same treatment. One hardware revision may be patched while another remains partially patched or unpatched.

What you find Recommended action What it means
Supported model/version with current security firmware Keep it, install updates through TP-Link’s supported process, and continue checking the regional support page. The device still has an active maintenance path.
Affected legacy model with a listed applicable fix Install the specified firmware, after confirming model, hardware revision, and region. TP-Link found a technically feasible remediation for that combination.
Partially patched model/version Apply every available update, then evaluate whether the remaining exposure is acceptable for your network. Some remediation exists, but the advisory does not describe the device as fully fixed.
Unsupported or unpatched model/version Plan replacement with a supported router that receives regular security updates. There is no available firmware fix for the identified exposure.

TP-Link’s recommendation for an affected or potentially affected legacy device with no fix is replacement. That is a security decision, not a claim that the hardware will immediately fail.

  1. Confirm identity. Recheck the model, hardware version, and regional support page. Never substitute a file because the model name appears similar.
  2. Back up the configuration. Export a settings backup from the router’s administration interface if the model supports it. Record ISP credentials and custom settings that you may need if the router resets.
  3. Read the release notes. Confirm that the download applies to your hardware revision and note any reset, compatibility, or recovery instructions.
  4. Download from TP-Link’s official regional site. Save the firmware locally and verify that the version matches the advisory or support instructions.
  5. Connect by Ethernet where possible. A wired connection reduces the chance that a Wi-Fi interruption will break the upload.
  6. Start the update in the router’s web management page. Some TP-Link Cloud-compatible models can also update through the web interface or the Tether app. Use only the method documented for your model.
  7. Do not power off or disconnect anything. TP-Link specifically warns against turning off the router or removing the Ethernet connection during installation.
  8. Wait for the reboot to finish. Lights may change and the network may be unavailable temporarily. Do not repeatedly press the power button or reload the page while the update is running.
  9. Verify the result. Sign in again, check the displayed firmware version, confirm that internet access and Wi-Fi work, and restore the backup only if necessary.

If an update fails, leave the router powered as instructed by its recovery documentation and use the model-specific support procedure. Do not try firmware from a different region or hardware revision as a recovery shortcut.

If there is no firmware update

Disabling a feature can reduce exposure, but it cannot create a security patch. If the exact version is unsupported or unpatched, treat mitigations as temporary risk reduction while you arrange a replacement.

Reduce exposure on a legacy router

  • Install the newest firmware that TP-Link actually provides for that exact model and region, even if it does not address the current advisory.
  • Turn off remote administration from the internet unless you have a documented, necessary reason to use it.
  • Disable services you do not use, such as unnecessary cloud access, dynamic DNS, or exposed administration interfaces.
  • Restrict management access to trusted devices on the internal network.
  • Place the old router behind a supported firewall or router when your network design allows it, and avoid exposing its administration interface directly to the internet.
  • Watch for unexpected DNS changes, unfamiliar devices, unexplained configuration edits, or unusual outbound traffic.
  • Change the administrator password to a unique, long password and remove old accounts if the interface permits it.

These steps lower attack surface; they do not make unsupported hardware equivalent to a maintained product. If the router controls a home office, cameras, storage, or other sensitive equipment, replacement should move higher on your priority list.

Decide whether to keep, patch, or replace

Use five facts together: the exact hardware version, regional support and EOL status, availability of security firmware, the remediation state for any relevant advisory, and what the router does on your network.

Keep and maintain

Keeping the router is reasonable when TP-Link still supports the exact version and provides current security firmware. Install updates promptly, retain a configuration backup, and check the official regional support page periodically. A recent purchase date is not proof of support, and an old purchase date is not proof that support has ended.

Patch an affected legacy model

TP-Link has issued updates for some older models where a fix was technically feasible. If the advisory marks your exact combination patched and supplies a regional firmware version, install it using the safe-update process. Keep the advisory and release notes with your records so you know which version you installed.

Replace an unsupported or unpatched model

Replacement is the clearest choice when the exact version has no available fix, is listed as unpatched, or no longer receives security maintenance. TP-Link points to its Wi-Fi 7 lineup as one category of supported hardware, but Wi-Fi 7 is not a requirement for every household. Choose a currently supported router that fits your needs and has a published update policy.

Check practical compatibility before buying

  • Confirm that the replacement works with your ISP and connection type, including modem, fiber, DSL, or required authentication.
  • Match coverage and capacity to the home’s size, construction, and number of simultaneous devices.
  • Check required features such as mesh expansion, guest networks, parental controls, VPN support, VLANs, or wired multi-gigabit ports.
  • Read the manufacturer’s current support and security-update policy rather than relying on the product’s Wi-Fi generation alone.

No single replacement specification answers the lifecycle question. A supported Wi-Fi 6 router can be a better fit than a more expensive standard your ISP, devices, or coverage plan cannot use.

“I found firmware online, but it is for another region.”

Do not install it. TP-Link says regional firmware files are not interchangeable. Return to the support page matching the router’s purchase region.

“The advisory says partially patched.”

Install every applicable update and read TP-Link’s qualification carefully. Partial remediation is not the same as a full fix; if the remaining risk matters to your household, replacement is the safer path.

“There is no update and I cannot replace it immediately.”

Apply the exposure-reduction steps, remove remote administration, limit trusted access, monitor for unauthorized changes, and treat the arrangement as temporary. Do not describe these controls as a substitute for a missing patch.

What the CVSS score tells you

TP-Link rates CVE-2023-50224 at CVSS v3.0 6.5, Medium, in its May 12, 2026 advisory. CVSS is a standardized severity rating for the vulnerability. It is not a percentage chance that your router will be compromised and does not estimate the risk to a particular household.

There is no official population-wide estimate in the cited guidance for how many TP-Link households are affected or how likely an individual router is to be attacked. Likewise, there is no universal replacement age that applies to every TP-Link model. Model-specific support and patch status remain the decisive evidence.

TP-Link’s broader lifecycle warning

TP-Link’s US company guidance states: “All routers, like any internet-facing device, have a security lifespan, which is true regardless of the manufacturer.” That principle explains why an otherwise functional router can become an unacceptable security choice after updates end.

For your device, the practical answer is therefore conditional: keep it when the exact version remains supported and patched; update it when an applicable fix exists; and replace it when support or a required security fix is unavailable.
