Can You Keep, Equip, or Customize a Hired Pawn in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

No. A hired or support Pawn in Dragon’s Dogma 2 cannot become your permanent companion or be customized as if it were your own. Your persistent companion is the Main Pawn. You can hire up to two support Pawns from friends or other players, inspect and command them, and temporarily equip them, but they remain owned by their original players.

The most important equipment warning is easy to miss: gear newly equipped on a support Pawn is treated as a gift to that Pawn’s owner when the Pawn leaves. Remove valuable weapons and armor before dismissal if you want to keep them. Ordinary materials carried in the Pawn’s pack follow different rules and can return to your storage when the Pawn is dismissed or forfeited.

Main Pawn versus hired Pawn: the essential difference

Dragon’s Dogma 2 separates Pawns into one persistent companion and temporary helpers. The PlayStation description calls the Main Pawn “fully customizable.” Support Pawns are the additional companions you hire through the game’s Pawn system; Capcom describes them as Pawns serving friends or other players.

Feature Main Pawn Hired/support Pawn
Ownership and persistence Your own Pawn; remains part of your party and progression Belongs to another player and is temporary
Appearance and voice Can be changed with the Art of Metamorphosis under the game’s conditions You can inspect the Pawn, but you cannot permanently alter its appearance or voice
Inclination Can be changed with the Art of Metamorphosis or the appropriate Rift Incense interaction Cannot be permanently changed by the hiring player
Vocation Managed as part of your own Pawn’s development Chosen by its owner; you cannot convert the hired Pawn to another vocation
Equipment You control its normal equipment and retain the items Compatible equipment can be placed on it, but newly equipped gear is sent to the owner when it leaves
Progression Part of your party’s ongoing development Remains another player’s Pawn; your temporary use does not make it yours
Availability Always tied to your character Hired from friends or other players; hiring is limited to the same platform

This distinction answers most customization questions: if a change affects ownership, permanent appearance, voice, inclination, vocation or progression, it belongs to the Pawn’s owner rather than the person who hired it.

Can you keep a hired Pawn permanently?

You cannot. A support Pawn is a temporary hire, not a second Main Pawn. You may keep it in your active party while the hire remains valid, but there is no system for transferring ownership, converting it into your Main Pawn or making its progression permanent for your character.

When you no longer want the Pawn, you dismiss it. A support Pawn can also become forfeit in situations handled by the game’s Pawn system. Either way, the hired Pawn returns to its owner’s side of the system rather than becoming part of your roster.

Hiring is asynchronous rather than cooperative multiplayer. You are not joining the other player’s live session, and the other player is not controlling the Pawn in your world. Capcom’s FAQ says you can hire Pawns serving friends or other players around the world, but also specifies that Pawns can be hired only by users playing on the same platform.

What can you do with a hired Pawn?

Inspect its information before hiring

Use the hiring interface at the game’s Pawn-related in-game locations and options to review a support Pawn before confirming the hire. Check its vocation, equipment, skills and other displayed details so you know what role it will fill. This is the safe point to reject a Pawn whose build does not suit your party; hiring does not give you the right to rebuild it.

Command it during your adventure

A hired Pawn can fight alongside you and respond to the game’s normal Pawn commands. Its behavior, vocation and learned capabilities are still based on the Pawn supplied by its owner. Commands are temporary party management, not permanent edits to the Pawn.

Temporarily equip compatible gear

You can place compatible weapons, armor or other equipment on a support Pawn. Compatibility still follows the game’s normal rules, including the Pawn’s vocation. A weapon or armor piece that the vocation cannot use does not become usable merely because the Pawn was hired.

Send a gift before dismissal

Capcom states that the game lets you send a gift before dismissing a support Pawn. Treat that option as a deliberate transfer to the owner. Do not use the gift function for equipment you expected to retrieve.

Can you equip a hired Pawn without losing your armor?

Only if you remove your own gear before the Pawn leaves. The current inventory guidance for Dragon’s Dogma 2 reports that equipment newly equipped on a support Pawn is sent to that Pawn’s owner when the Pawn leaves. In practical terms, putting your spare sword, helmet or armor on a hired Pawn is a gift, even if you supplied the item only to improve the Pawn for the next few quests.

  • Single-Player Cooperation – Up to three mysterious otherworldly beings, known as Pawns, accompany the Arisen throughout their journey. The game does not treat this like lending an item from your inventory. Once the Pawn is dismissed or otherwise leaves, assume that equipped gear has left your possession. If the equipment matters to your character, unequip it while the support Pawn is still in your party and verify that it is back in your own inventory or storage.

A safe equipment routine

  1. Inspect the Pawn’s existing loadout. Decide whether it already has suitable equipment for the role you need.
  2. Use only expendable gear if an upgrade is necessary. Select equipment you are willing to give away permanently.
  3. Check vocation compatibility. The Pawn must be able to use the weapon or armor under the normal rules.
  4. Before dismissal, open the Pawn’s equipment and remove anything you want to keep. Do this before selecting the dismissal or departure confirmation.
  5. Send a gift only when the transfer is intentional. A gift is for the other player’s Pawn, not a temporary loan back to you.

If you cannot remember whether an item was originally yours, handle it as though it will not return. That rule prevents an expensive mistake when ending a hire.

Do carried materials come back when a Pawn leaves?

Carried items and equipped gear are handled differently. The cited inventory guidance reports that ordinary materials in a support Pawn’s pack return to your storage when the Pawn is dismissed or forfeited. Capcom also states that items held by a Pawn that becomes forfeit are automatically sent to item storage.

That storage behavior does not override the equipment rule. A material carried in the pack is not the same as a weapon or armor piece you equipped on the Pawn. Keep those categories separate when deciding what is safe to leave with a support Pawn.

Why Pawn specializations still matter

Some Pawn specializations can move or sell low-rarity items. Therefore, do not use a hired Pawn as a casual warehouse for valuables merely because ordinary materials can return to storage after dismissal. A Pawn’s specialization may affect what happens to low-rarity items before the Pawn leaves. Keep rare, quest-critical or expensive items in your own inventory or storage unless you have a specific reason to hand them over.

Can you change a rented Pawn’s appearance or voice?

No. You can view the hired Pawn’s appearance and select it for your party, but the available information does not provide a method for applying your Art of Metamorphosis, voice settings or other permanent appearance tools to another player’s Pawn.

The Art of Metamorphosis is relevant to your Main Pawn under the game’s conditions. It does not turn a support Pawn into a customizable character under your control. If you want a Pawn with a different face, body, voice or presentation, choose another support Pawn whose owner has already made those choices.

Can you change a hired Pawn’s inclination?

Not permanently. Your Main Pawn’s inclination can be changed with the Art of Metamorphosis or the appropriate Rift Incense interaction. Those tools are part of managing your own Pawn; they are not editing controls for a hired support Pawn.

You can still account for a support Pawn’s displayed behavior when choosing whether to hire it. If its inclination or skill setup does not fit your party, select a different Pawn rather than expecting to correct it after recruitment.

Can you change a hired Pawn’s vocation?

You cannot change another player’s Pawn into a different vocation. The support Pawn arrives with the vocation selected by its owner, and that vocation governs which weapons and armor are compatible.

This is why the inspection step matters. A hired Pawn can fill a missing role in your party, but you must recruit one already suited to that role. Equipping a compatible item may improve its effectiveness; it does not change the Pawn’s vocation, unlock a new vocation for it or transfer control of its development to you.

How to hire and dismiss a support Pawn safely

Hiring

  1. Open a Pawn hiring option in the game. The system offers Pawns from friends and other players.
  2. Review the candidate. Check vocation, equipment, skills and the displayed information that helps you judge whether it fits your party.
  3. Confirm the hire. The support Pawn joins as a temporary party member; ownership remains with the original player.
  4. Repeat only up to the support-Pawn slots available to your party. The system is designed for your Main Pawn plus up to two additional hired Pawns.

Dismissal

  1. Decide whether any equipped item is yours. Remove weapons, armor or other equipment you want to retain.
  2. Review the Pawn’s carried items separately. Ordinary materials follow storage rules that differ from equipped gear.
  3. Send a gift only if you accept permanent transfer. The gift goes to the Pawn’s owner.
  4. Confirm dismissal. The support Pawn leaves your party and is no longer available as your active hire.

Interface wording can vary by platform or update, but the ownership and item-transfer rules do not change: dismissing a Pawn is not a way to reclaim gear that remains equipped on it.

What happens if a support Pawn is forfeit?

A forfeit is another departure state handled by the Pawn system. Capcom says items held by a Pawn that becomes forfeit are automatically sent to item storage. The support Pawn itself still does not become yours, and this does not create a route to permanent recruitment.

Because the game separates held items from equipped equipment, the prudent approach is the same as with normal dismissal: do not leave valuable personal gear equipped on a hired Pawn. If you are relying on a material to return, remember that Pawn specializations may move or sell low-rarity items before the Pawn’s departure is processed.

Platform and online limitations

Support Pawns come from the game’s online sharing system, but Dragon’s Dogma 2 is not online co-op multiplayer in the sense of another player directly entering your adventure. You hire a recorded Pawn associated with another player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross-platform hiring is also restricted. Capcom’s FAQ states that a Pawn can be hired only by a user playing on the same platform. A friend’s Pawn may therefore be unavailable if you are playing on a different platform, even when both players own the game.
