Yes—when you complete an Epic Games Store free-game claim before its stated deadline, the game remains in your Epic library permanently. You do not have to download or install it during the giveaway week. Epic describes the result as a purchased digital license attached to your account, so the promotion can end without removing a completed claim.
“Forever” has an important legal and practical limit: you receive a conditional, account-bound license, not the game’s copyright or a transferable copy. A delisted title can remain in your library, yet an online game may become unplayable if its required services shut down. Trials, betas and press builds can also expire even when an ordinary giveaway does not.

What happens when you claim a free Epic game?
Epic’s weekly giveaway is a time-limited promotion, not a rental that ends when the weekly rotation changes. Epic says a free game is normally available for seven days. During that window, you must complete the claim through the Epic Games Store while signed in to the account you intend to keep using.

Note the ending date and time shown on the giveaway page. Epic’s support guidance says free promotions have a limited duration and must be claimed within the indicated period.
- Sign in to the correct Epic account. This matters if you have more than one account or use Google, console or other linked sign-in methods. The entitlement is recorded on the account that completes the transaction.
- Complete the claim. Open the free title’s store page and finish the no-cost checkout or claim flow. Do not stop at merely viewing the page or adding the game to a temporary cart.
- Verify the library entry. After the claim completes, look in your Library and confirm that the title appears. This check catches account mix-ups before the promotion rotates.
Once the transaction is complete, Epic’s FAQ says the game remains in your library even after it is no longer available to new customers for free. The weekly support article states that a claimed game is yours permanently, even if you do not download it immediately.

Do Epic free games expire if you never download them?
No. Downloading is not the event that preserves the offer; completing the claim is. A title can remain untouched in your library for months or years and still be available for installation under the license associated with your Epic account.
The distinction is easiest to see in this comparison:
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| You complete the claim before the deadline | The game receives a continuing library entitlement, even if you never install it. |
| You visit the page but do not complete the claim | No entitlement is created; the offer can expire when the promotion ends. |
| You try to claim after the deadline | Epic’s support guidance does not promise retroactive claims. The title may become paid or leave the promotion. |
| You claim a normal giveaway and later reinstall the launcher or computer | The entitlement is associated with the Epic account, so you can look for it in that account’s Library again. |
A screenshot, a download started before the deadline, or a game listed in a browser tab is not a substitute for a completed claim. If the transaction did not finish, treat the game as unclaimed.
Does “keep forever” mean you own the game?
Not in the copyright or property sense. Epic’s store FAQ calls a claimed free title a “purchased digital license.” The Epic Games End User License Agreement (EULA) says software is “licensed, not sold.” Under that arrangement, Epic and the game’s licensors retain title and intellectual-property rights.

The practical meaning of the license is that your Epic account receives permission to access the software under the EULA’s conditions. It is generally:
- Personal: intended for the account holder rather than the general public.
- Non-exclusive: Epic can license the same software to many other users.
- Non-transferable: you cannot move the entitlement to a different Epic account as if it were a physical disc.
- Non-sublicensable: you cannot grant your own downstream license to someone else.
- Limited: the permission is subject to the EULA, account rules, technical requirements and the services needed to deliver the game.
That is why “free” describes the price at the time of the promotion, while “permanent” describes the continuing library entitlement. It does not authorize resale, copyright ownership, account transfer or unrestricted offline use.
What if Epic delists a game?
Delisting normally stops new purchases; it does not ordinarily erase a completed claim. Epic’s delisting guidance says that a game removed from the store can no longer be purchased, but a person who already owns or claimed it keeps access in the Library.

- Store availability: the product page may disappear or stop accepting new transactions.
- Library availability: the claimed title can remain listed for the account that obtained it.
- Installation: the launcher may still offer a download, but this depends on the title’s files and Epic’s delivery systems.
- Playability: games that require developer-operated servers, authentication or other online services can lose functionality when those services are discontinued.
Do not interpret “permanent” as a guarantee that every mode will work forever. A single-player title with all required files may remain usable after delisting, while an online-only title can become inaccessible or substantially impaired after a service shutdown.
Are trials, betas and press builds permanent?
No. Epic distinguishes an ordinary claimed promotion from limited-time versions. A beta, trial, demo with an expiration date or press build may be available at no cost without creating the same permanent entitlement as a standard giveaway.
Check the store description and the transaction language for terms such as “trial,” “beta,” “limited-time version” or “press build.” If access ends for one of these versions, that does not show that Epic revoked a normal free-game claim; the two offers have different terms.
Can you claim an Epic free game after the offer ends?
Usually not. Epic’s support wording is direct: free promotions last for a limited duration, and the game must be claimed within the indicated period. Once the weekly window closes, Epic is not promising a retroactive entitlement for people who missed it.

Occasionally, a title can return in a later promotion, but a past giveaway does not create a standing right to claim it after its deadline. Check the current store listing rather than relying on an old announcement, because the price and availability can change when the promotion rotates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if a claimed game is missing
A missing library entry is not proof that the giveaway expired. Epic’s support guidance identifies several account, filter and eligibility causes. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the account. Sign out and back in using the Epic account that completed the claim. If you used a Google sign-in or a console-linked account, make sure it did not create or open a separate Epic account.
- Reset Library filters. Clear platform, genre, installed-status and other filters that could hide the title. A filtered view can make a valid entitlement appear absent.
- Refresh the Library. Reload the launcher or store library after the claim has completed. Temporary synchronization delays can prevent a newly claimed game from appearing immediately.
- Check platform compatibility. Some games are not available for every operating system or device. Verify that the title supports the platform on which you are looking for it.
- Check transaction history and refunds. A paid title that was refunded is removed from the library. Review your account’s Transactions page to see whether the relevant transaction was reversed.
- Consider limited-time builds. If the item was a beta, trial or press build, its access may have ended by design rather than disappeared from a permanent giveaway entitlement.
- Contact Epic Player Support with transaction details. Include the account identifier, title, approximate claim date and any receipt or confirmation so support can investigate the specific entitlement.
Epic also lists fraudulent-code revocation as a possible reason access can be removed. That situation is different from a normal, successfully completed free promotion.

Can you get a refund for an Epic Games Store game?
Refunds apply to paid purchases made through Epic checkout; a normal no-cost giveaway is not a paid transaction that you can reverse for money. If you bought the game separately, Epic’s refund rules are the relevant ones.
For PC and Mac purchases marked “refundable” or “self-refundable,” Epic generally allows a request within 14 days of purchase when total runtime is under two hours. These are eligibility conditions, not a guarantee that every transaction qualifies.
| Purchase or product type | General treatment under Epic’s stated policy |
|---|---|
| PC/Mac product marked refundable or self-refundable | Generally eligible within 14 days if runtime is under two hours. |
| Self-refundable purchase | Submit the request from the account’s Transactions page. |
| Other refundable purchase | Request help through Epic Player Support. |
| Subscription | Generally excluded unless a specific rule or applicable law provides otherwise. |
| In-app purchase, consumable or virtual currency | Generally excluded unless applicable law requires a refund. |
| Product marked non-refundable | Generally excluded unless applicable law requires otherwise. |
| Mobile purchase | Epic’s refund policy covers purchases made through Epic checkout on mobile, but the exact eligibility can depend on the product and transaction terms. |
When Epic processes a refund, the refunded game is removed from the library. That explains why a paid title that was visible previously can disappear after its transaction is reversed. It does not mean a separate, successfully claimed giveaway has naturally expired.
What can still limit access to a permanent claim?
A completed claim is durable, but it remains subject to the account and service agreement. Epic’s EULA and terms reserve controls over accounts, software, platform operation and technical changes. Account termination for violations, platform restrictions, changes required to operate the service, or a shutdown of a required online service can affect access or playability.
These limits should be read narrowly. The end of a seven-day promotion is not itself a reason for Epic to remove a successfully claimed game. The important distinction is between promotion expiration—which affects people who did not claim—and a later account, license or service event that affects how an existing entitlement can be used.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist for every weekly giveaway
- Open the offer while it is still within the displayed promotion period.
- Use the Epic account you plan to keep permanently.
- Finish the no-cost checkout instead of only starting a download.
- Confirm the title appears in Library before the deadline passes.
- Keep in mind that a trial, beta or press build may not be permanent.
- For a missing title, check account identity, filters, refresh status, platform compatibility and refund history before assuming expiration.
- For a paid purchase, check the 14-day and under-two-hour conditions and whether the product is marked refundable.
