Usually not. If the offer was a Steam Free Weekend for a normally paid game, it was a temporary trial. When the event ends, Steam removes the free package; the game can remain visible in your Library, but you can no longer launch it for free. Continued play requires buying the full version.
That is different from a genuinely free-to-play game, which remains available without an access charge under the game’s own rules. The wording of the promotion determines what license you received.

What happens when a Steam Free Weekend ends?
Valve’s Steamworks documentation defines a Free Weekend as a time-limited promotion that lets players access and play an eligible paid game. It is not a permanent addition to your account. The promotion opens the game’s base package for a fixed period and closes that access when the event window expires.
After the event, Steam automatically removes the free package from the game’s Store page. If you participated, the title may still appear in your Steam Library, but Valve says the remaining Library action is to uninstall it. The listing is therefore a record of the title you tried, not proof that you own a continuing play license.

“Free-to-play” and “free weekend” mean different things
Many questions use “free-to-play promotion” as a general phrase, but Steam treats two separate access models differently. Identifying which one you saw is the key to predicting what happens next.
| Offer type | How long access lasts | What happens afterward | What you need to continue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Free Weekend | Only during the announced event period | The temporary free package is removed; the title may stay in your Library for uninstalling | Buy the full version |
| Free-to-play game | Ongoing, subject to the game’s own rules | The game remains available to download and play without an access charge | Meet any game-specific account or content requirements |
| Demo | For the period and content defined by the demo | Demo access ends or remains limited to the demo build | Buy the game if you want the complete version |
| Giveaway or “claim” offer | Whatever the promotion’s terms specify | Could be a lasting license or a temporary entitlement | Follow the stated claim deadline and license terms |
Steam Support describes free-to-play games as titles that can be downloaded for free and played without a subscription or credit card. That does not guarantee every feature is unrestricted: an individual game can impose its own account, age, region, or progression limits. Check that game’s Store page for those conditions.
A Free Weekend instead temporarily opens a normally paid title. Steamworks distinguishes it from a demo because the promotion provides access to the base game through its current app ID rather than a separate demo application.

Why the game can remain in your Library
Library visibility and ownership are separate concepts. Steam can leave the title listed so you can find the installation, remove its files, or see the Store page, while the temporary play license has already expired. The Library entry is not a promise that the promotion became a permanent claim.
This is why two apparently contradictory things can be true at once: the game is still listed under your Library, and pressing Play no longer gives you access. The Free Weekend package has ended even though the catalog entry remains.
A publisher announcement for one specific Steam Free Weekend expressed the same event-specific rule this way: “Your license to play the game will terminate and you will need to purchase it.” That sentence describes that publisher’s promotion; Valve’s Steamworks documentation supplies the general Free Weekend behavior.

Look for “Free Weekend” or a date range
Steam Free Weekend pages normally identify the event as a Free Weekend and show a start and end time. Steamworks says these events typically run from Thursday at 10 a.m. Pacific to Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific, but that is scheduling guidance, not a guarantee for every title. The exact dates and times on the event page control your access.
Look for “Free to Play” on the Store page
If Steam classifies the title as free to play, the no-charge access is intended to continue rather than expire with a weekend campaign. Read the game’s own restrictions, because free-to-play status does not remove every possible account or content condition.
Check whether the offer said “claim” or “add to account”
Some promotions use language that promises a lasting account license, while others offer only a trial or temporary package. The official Free Weekend rules do not establish a universal outcome for every giveaway, publisher campaign, bundle, or limited-time package. If the page told you to claim the game permanently, follow that offer’s terms and deadline instead of assuming it used the Free Weekend model.

- Open your Steam Library and select the title. If it is still listed, remember that the entry alone does not establish current play rights.
- Check the game’s Store page. Read the status text and the promotion’s end time. Confirm whether the page describes a Free Weekend, a free-to-play release, a demo, or a separate giveaway.
- Attempt to launch only after checking the status. An ended Free Weekend should no longer provide free play; Steam will direct you toward purchasing the full version.
- Decide whether to buy the full version. Purchasing is the step Valve identifies as necessary for continued play after a Free Weekend.
- Uninstall the trial if you do not intend to buy it. Steamworks specifically notes that participants can still uninstall the game from the Library after the event.
Do not treat a missing “Play” button, a purchase prompt, or an uninstall-only Library entry as a malfunction before checking the event’s published end time. Those results are consistent with the temporary license ending.

Does the promotion affect your Steam account status?
Playing a promotional trial is not the same as making a qualifying purchase on Steam. Steam Support’s explanation of limited user accounts lists adding or playing promotional trials such as Free Weekends among actions that do not remove limited-user restrictions.
That means a Free Weekend can let you play the game during its event while leaving community capabilities subject to Steam’s separate limited-account rules. Game access and account-status eligibility are different systems; finishing a trial does not by itself unlock restricted community features.

You keep the Library record
The title can remain visible in your Library after the temporary package is removed. This helps you locate the game and its Store page, but the listing is not the same as a permanent license.
You do not keep free play from the Free Weekend
Valve’s post-event instruction is explicit: continued play requires purchasing the full version. The temporary access does not silently become an owned copy.

Other data depends on the game
The official Free Weekend guidance establishes access and licensing behavior, not a universal policy for save files, achievements, downloadable content, or progress. Those details can vary by title and should be checked in the game’s own support information. Do not infer permanent ownership from the presence of local files or a Library entry.
Common cases that cause confusion
“I downloaded the whole game, so why can’t I keep it?”
A Free Weekend often delivers the full base-game files so you can evaluate the real game rather than a restricted demo. Downloading those files does not grant an enduring license. The package can be installed while the event is active and still require purchase afterward.
“The game is still in my Library, so why does Steam ask me to buy it?”
The Library entry survives for participants, while the temporary play entitlement does not. Steam’s documentation specifically describes this combination: the game remains listed, but the available post-event action is uninstalling unless you purchase the full version.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“The title was free this weekend. Did it become a free-to-play game?”
No. A temporary price of zero during a Free Weekend does not change the game’s business model. A free-to-play game is offered on an ongoing basis under its own rules; a Free Weekend is a time-limited opening of a paid game.
“I played the trial. Does that remove limited-user restrictions?”
No. Steam Support counts promotional trials, including Free Weekends, among activities that do not qualify as the spend or purchase needed to remove limited-account limitations.
How to avoid losing access to a promotion you meant to claim
- Read the headline and the fine print together. “Play free” can describe a trial, while “claim” or “add to account” may describe a different license.
- Record the end time and time zone. The event’s published deadline, not your download time, determines how long the Free Weekend remains playable.
- Check the Store classification. Confirm whether Steam labels the game Free to Play, presents a Free Weekend banner, or offers a demo.
- Look for a required claim action. If the promotion says you must add the title to your account before a deadline, follow that instruction exactly.
- Keep the publisher’s event terms. A publisher may explain a particular promotion in its own announcement; those terms apply to that event and should not be generalized to every Steam offer.
The practical rule
If you received temporary access to a paid game through a Steam Free Weekend, you cannot keep playing it for free after the event. The game may stay in your Library, but that is an uninstallable listing rather than ownership. Buy the full version to continue.
If the game is genuinely marked free to play, access is intended to continue without an access charge, subject to that title’s restrictions. If the offer used different language—such as a giveaway, bundle, or claim promotion—read its specific license terms because the Free Weekend rule does not cover every promotion format.
