Sometimes—but “free” offers do not all work the same way. A game you successfully claim during a limited Epic Games Store giveaway stays in your Epic library after the promotion ends. That is a continuing digital license, not ownership of the software. PlayStation Plus monthly games work differently: you can use them only while your membership is active. Games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog or Classics Catalog are another subscription benefit and may leave the catalog on a published date.
The practical test is simple: identify whether you claimed a storefront giveaway or merely received access through a subscription, then check whether you completed the required action before the deadline.

The short answer: “claimed” and “included with a subscription” are different
A limited-time storefront giveaway normally has a one-time claim step. Once the claim is recorded on your account, the title is added to your library under the store’s license terms. Epic Games Store states that a claimed free game remains in your library even after it is no longer offered free to new customers.
A subscription game is not a permanent library purchase. PlayStation says its monthly games are available for as long as you remain an active PlayStation Plus member. If that membership ends, games obtained at no cost as monthly games become unavailable, even if they were downloaded previously.

Catalog access is more temporary still. PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium (or Deluxe, depending on region) provide libraries of games tied to a membership tier. Individual catalog titles can have announced removal dates, so an active subscription alone does not guarantee that every catalog game remains playable indefinitely.
What happens when you claim an Epic Games Store giveaway?
You must complete the claim during the displayed promotion
Epic’s limited-duration promotions require you to select the game and complete the store’s claim or checkout process while the offer is active. Merely viewing the page, installing the Epic Games launcher, or intending to claim it later does not add the title to your account. The offer page’s deadline controls; do not assume that a game remains claimable until the end of the calendar day in your local time.
Epic support currently describes a new weekly free game as arriving Thursday at 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time and remaining claimable for seven days. That is current support guidance, not a promise that every future promotion will use the same weekday, time, or duration. Read the deadline displayed on the individual offer, especially when daylight-saving changes or regional time conversions are involved.

Epic’s FAQ says: “When you claim a free game, it remains in your library to play – even after the game is no longer available to new customers for free.” A claimed title can remain listed even if you have never downloaded it. Downloading is not the event that preserves the offer; completing the claim is.
This means you can claim a game on a laptop, leave it uninstalled, and install it later from the same Epic account. The library entry is the useful evidence that the transaction was recorded. Keep in mind that access still depends on the account and the platform continuing to provide the service under its terms.
“Forever” means an ongoing license, not ownership
Epic’s End User License Agreement describes the transaction as a license: “The Software is licensed, not sold, to you under the License.” The no-cost transaction grants a personal, limited right to use the software under that agreement. Therefore, “the game stays in your library” is accurate; “you own the game forever” is broader than the platform’s wording supports.

That distinction matters if an account is closed, restricted, transferred, or otherwise affected by the agreement, or if a service changes how it delivers a title. The normal promise for a completed giveaway is continued library access under the license terms—not an unconditional guarantee covering every possible legal, technical, or account circumstance.

How PlayStation Plus monthly games differ
Monthly games require an active membership
PlayStation’s US PlayStation Plus FAQ answers whether monthly games are yours to keep with: “Yes, for as long as you remain an active member.” The wording describes ongoing eligibility rather than permanent ownership. Your account can retain the association with a monthly game, but the entitlement is usable only while the membership is active.
PlayStation Support’s cancellation guidance is explicit: when a membership ends, games previously downloaded at no cost as monthly games are no longer available. This applies even when the game remains installed on the console. Renewing an eligible membership can restore access to the monthly-game entitlement, subject to the service’s current terms and availability.
Paid purchases and redeemed extras are separate
The cancellation guidance distinguishes monthly games from items such as redeemed packs, avatars, and purchases made at a discount. Those other items are treated differently and are kept according to their own entitlement rules. Do not infer that a discounted purchase has the same expiration condition as a monthly game simply because both appeared in the PlayStation Plus interface.
Catalog games can rotate out
PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles are selected benefits of particular membership tiers. PlayStation warns that some have announced dates when they leave the service. If a catalog game is removed, an active membership does not by itself preserve access to that title. A game you buy separately is a different entitlement from a game you only streamed or downloaded through the catalog.

How to make sure an Epic giveaway is really yours
- Open the offer before its deadline. Use the date and time shown on the game’s promotion page rather than relying on a weekly habit.
- Sign in to the intended Epic account. Check the account name or email before claiming, particularly if several people use the same computer.
- Complete the claim flow. Select the free offer, proceed through the checkout screen, and finish the confirmation step even when the price is zero.
- Verify the library entry. Open your Epic library and confirm that the game appears. This check separates a completed claim from a page visit or an abandoned checkout.
- Install now or later. Installation is optional. A completed claim can remain in the library without occupying storage.
If the store shows a price after you thought you claimed the game, stop before paying and verify the account and promotion dates. A changed price can mean that the claim was not completed, the promotion ended, or you are signed into a different account.
What to do when a claimed Epic game is missing
Check every account you may have used
Epic support specifically recommends checking for multiple accounts, including separate Epic accounts and accounts linked to consoles. A console profile can be linked to a different Epic account from the one you use on a PC. Sign out, identify the account that completed the original claim, and inspect that account’s library.
Confirm that the promotion was actually claimed
Search your library rather than relying on a desktop shortcut or an old installation. If the title is absent, review whether you completed the zero-price checkout before the displayed deadline. Missing the deadline does not create a license; Epic’s support guidance is to watch for a later promotion.
Separate a library problem from an installation problem
A game can be present in the library but fail to launch or install for a different reason, such as a platform requirement, an update, or a service outage. First establish that the entitlement is visible on the correct account. Only then troubleshoot downloads or launch errors.

Monthly games stop working when the membership ends
Cancellation usually stops automatic renewal rather than ending paid time immediately. The relevant point is the membership end date shown on your account. Once that period ends, PlayStation’s support instructions say monthly games obtained at no cost are no longer available. An installed icon does not override that entitlement check.
Renewal can restore the monthly-game benefit
If the same account later has an eligible active membership, the monthly-game entitlement may become usable again under the service’s current rules. This is access being re-enabled, not a conversion of the monthly game into an owned, subscription-free copy.

Catalog removal is independent of cancellation
A catalog title can leave the service while your membership is still active. Watch the title’s announced end date and the catalog notice. If you want to keep playing after removal, the available path may be a separate purchase, if offered in your region; the catalog entitlement itself does not become permanent.

Regional, account, and timing qualifications
PlayStation’s cited product guidance is from the US, while its cancellation support wording is from UK support. Membership names, catalog contents, taxes, release dates, and exact terms can vary by region and plan. Use the PlayStation store and account page for your country as the controlling display.
Epic’s weekly timing guidance is also subject to change. A Thursday 8:00 a.m. Pacific Time schedule is useful for the current support description, but the promotion page’s own end time takes priority. Set a reminder only after converting that deadline to your local time.
Account identity is central on both platforms. A license or subscription entitlement follows the account that claimed or received it, not automatically every profile on a shared device. Family-sharing and console-sharing behavior can have separate rules that are not established by the platform statements covered here.
A practical decision rule for any “free game” offer
- Look for a claim or checkout action. If you must complete a zero-price transaction, treat it as a storefront claim and verify the library entry.
- Look for membership language. “Included with your membership,” “monthly games,” or a tier name indicates subscription-based access.
- Check for a catalog end date. A published removal date means the game is not a permanent part of the service.
- Read the entitlement wording. “Remains in your library” describes an account license; it does not promise ownership of the software.
- Record the account and deadline. These two details solve most disputes about whether an offer was successfully claimed.
Bottom line
A claimed Epic Games Store giveaway normally remains in the claiming account’s library after the promotion ends, even if you never downloaded it. That is licensed access under Epic’s terms, not an unconditional ownership guarantee. PlayStation Plus monthly games remain playable only while the required membership is active, and catalog games can disappear when their service listing ends. Before assuming a game is yours forever, identify the offer type, complete the claim before its deadline, and verify the entitlement on the correct account.
