WhatsApp’s guest-calling feature, announced on October 14, 2026, lets an invitee join from a computer browser without downloading WhatsApp, creating an account, or providing a phone number. The person who creates the call must have a WhatsApp account and may need to approve you from a waiting room.
The short answer
A WhatsApp account is no longer required for every person on a WhatsApp call. Under the guest-calling flow, the host creates a call link in WhatsApp and sends it to you through any convenient channel. You open that link in a computer browser, enter a display name, and wait for admission if the host has approval enabled.

This is different from registering for WhatsApp. Normal account registration still uses a primary phone number. That requirement applies to the account holder who creates and manages the call, not to an invited guest. A guest cannot create a WhatsApp call link independently.
How a guest WhatsApp call works
The process has two separate roles: the WhatsApp user who organizes the call and the guest who joins through the link.

1. The host creates the link
- The host opens WhatsApp and goes to the Calls tab.
- The host selects New call link. In the newer guest-calling flow, the control may appear as a plus icon instead.
- The host chooses whether the link is for a voice call or a video call.
- The host copies or shares the generated link outside WhatsApp if the invitee does not use WhatsApp.
Only an account holder can perform these steps. The host’s account is the control point for admitting or removing people, so a person who has never registered with WhatsApp cannot start this type of call.
2. The guest opens the invitation
Open the invitation link on a computer and follow the browser prompts. WhatsApp asks you to type a name so other participants and the host can identify you. You do not have to install the WhatsApp app, sign in, or enter a phone number for this guest flow.
3. The host admits the guest
If approval is required, the link takes you to a waiting room. You remain there until the host admits you. A host can decline entry or remove a guest after the call has started. If the host has not approved you yet, staying on the waiting-room page is expected behavior rather than a failed sign-in.

What guests can do once admitted
Guest calling is intended to provide the core experience of a WhatsApp voice or video call without requiring every participant to become a WhatsApp user. The documented guest-call capabilities are:
- Join a one-to-one call or a group call.
- Take part in calls with up to 32 people.
- Use voice or video, depending on the type of link the host created.
- Share the computer screen.
- React with a thumbs-up or heart.
- Raise a hand to signal that you want attention.
Guest calls are described as free, end-to-end encrypted, and without a time limit. “Free” refers to WhatsApp’s calling feature itself; your internet provider or mobile carrier can still charge for the data connection used by your computer.

What guests cannot do
The guest role is deliberately narrower than a full WhatsApp account. A guest:
- Cannot see the phone numbers of the other participants.
- Cannot send WhatsApp messages to participants from the call.
- Cannot add people directly to the call.
- Cannot generate a call link.
These limits mean the invitation is a temporary way into one call, not an anonymous replacement for a WhatsApp account. The host remains responsible for the participant list and can remove a guest at any point.

Keeping a guest-call link private
A call link is effectively an invitation credential. WhatsApp says each link is different and secure, but anyone who obtains the link may be able to try to join. Send it only to the people you trust, and avoid posting it in a public channel where it can be copied.
Use the host’s approval option when the link is being shared with a group, forwarded through several people, or used for a sensitive conversation. Approval gives the host a chance to identify each entrant before that person reaches the call. Encryption protects the call in transit, but it does not stop an admitted participant from hearing, recording, or sharing what happens on their own device.
When links stop working
WhatsApp’s Help Center states that unused call links expire after 30 days. WhatsApp may also revoke a link for privacy or security reasons. If an old invitation no longer opens a call, ask the host to create a new link rather than repeatedly retrying the expired one.

Browser and account rules
WhatsApp supports calling through supported apps or a web browser, while account registration continues to require a primary phone. Guest calling is the exception for invitees: the guest uses a computer browser without registering an account. The browser route described for guests does not turn the guest into a WhatsApp user or grant access to WhatsApp messaging.

The host should create the link in the WhatsApp interface first. Sending a normal WhatsApp chat invitation, a contact card, or a profile link is not the same as sending a guest-call link. If the invitation does not open a call page, confirm that the host used Calls → New call link (or the plus control in the guest flow).
Troubleshooting common situations
The link opens, but you are stuck waiting
You are probably in the approval queue. Keep the browser page open and ask the host to check the incoming guest request. Only the host can admit you; refreshing the page does not bypass approval.
The host says the link is invalid
Check whether the link has gone unused for more than 30 days or has been revoked. Have the WhatsApp user generate a new call link and send that new invitation directly to you.
You are asked to install WhatsApp or enter a phone number
Verify that you opened the guest-call URL on a computer and that the host created a guest-capable call link. Standard account registration and ordinary WhatsApp features still follow the phone-based sign-up process; they are not required for a correctly handled guest invitation.

You cannot join after the host admitted you
Confirm that the browser has permission to use the computer’s microphone and camera, if the call uses them. Check that the computer is online, close duplicate call tabs, and reopen the invitation if necessary. If the host removed you, only the host can decide whether to admit you again.
You expected to message someone from the call
Guest access is limited to the call. It does not provide a WhatsApp inbox, expose participant phone numbers, or add contacts. Exchange contact details through a separate channel if the participants want to continue the conversation elsewhere.
Host checklist before sending an invitation
- Confirm that your WhatsApp account is active and that you are in the Calls tab.
- Select New call link or the plus icon shown for guest calling.
- Choose voice or video before copying the link.
- Decide whether approval is appropriate for the people receiving the link.
- Send the link privately and explain that guests should open it in a computer browser.
- Watch the waiting room and admit only the people you recognize.
- Remove a guest if the wrong person enters or the participant list changes.
- Create a replacement link if the original is older than 30 days unused or appears to have been revoked.
Does this replace a WhatsApp account?
No. Guest calling solves one specific access problem: letting someone participate in a voice or video call without installing WhatsApp or sharing a phone number. It does not provide messaging, contact management, call-link creation, or the broader features associated with a registered account. Someone who wants those features must still follow WhatsApp’s normal account-registration process, including its primary-phone requirement.
For a one-time meeting, family call, interview, or event where some attendees do not use WhatsApp, the guest link can remove a major setup barrier. For recurring conversations that require messaging between calls, each participant may need a regular WhatsApp account or another communication method.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I join from a phone’s mobile browser instead of a computer?
The guest flow is documented for a computer browser. If the link redirects you to an app or does not provide the guest page, use a computer and ask the host to confirm that a guest-call link was created.
Can the host see the phone number I used to open the link?
Guest calling does not require you to provide a phone number, and guests are not shown the phone numbers of other participants. The host still sees the name you enter and controls whether you are admitted.
Can I leave and rejoin the same guest call?
Rejoining depends on whether the invitation is still active and whether the host admits you again. If the link has expired or been revoked, you need a new link from the host.
Is a guest call limited to a fixed number of minutes?
The guest-calling feature is described as having no time limit. Your session can still end if the host ends the call, removes you, or the browser loses its connection.
