Samsung does not let owners install arbitrary Android or third-party apps on the fridge. SmartThings can connect a compatible refrigerator to a phone or tablet for some monitoring and control features, but it does not add apps to the refrigerator display.
Which Samsung refrigerators can run apps?
Samsung’s app-installation instructions apply to refrigerators with a Family Hub panel—not every Samsung refrigerator. Family Hub models include some apps already, and may offer additional downloads. The available selection can vary by model and software version, and Samsung says it may change over time or after a software update. Samsung’s Family Hub customization guidance explains the limits of that catalog.

Samsung states: “The apps listed in the Apps menu are the only apps available for Family Hub. You cannot install any other apps, such as Android apps.” That means the refrigerator’s Apps menu—not Google Play or an app store on your phone—is the source of apps you can install on its screen.

How to install an app that Samsung offers
- On the Family Hub screen, swipe up from the bottom to open Apps.
- Scroll to the downloadable apps.
- Tap Install under the app you want. You can also tap the app’s icon and then tap Install.
- After installation, find the app with the other apps on the refrigerator.
This procedure installs only an app listed as available on that Family Hub screen; it does not install an Android package or an app transferred from a phone. If the app you want is not listed, Samsung’s documented interface does not provide a way to add it independently. See Samsung’s instructions for the Apps menu.

SmartThings is for phone control, not expanding the fridge’s app catalog
You can connect a compatible Family Hub refrigerator to SmartThings on a phone or tablet. Samsung describes using the connection to monitor or control some refrigerator features; examples include checking refrigerator status and viewing inside the fridge. Those functions run through the mobile app and do not install more apps on the refrigerator display. Samsung’s setup guide covers connecting the refrigerator, while its compatibility guide explains mobile-device requirements.
For the US compatibility information in Samsung’s cited guide, Android devices need Android 9 or later and at least 2 GB of RAM. Supported iPhone and iPad models need iOS 15.0 or later and at least 2 GB of RAM. These are requirements for connecting a mobile device to Family Hub through SmartThings, not requirements for installing refrigerator apps. Check Samsung’s current guidance for your region and device before setup.

Check your exact model and software
Do not assume that a Samsung refrigerator has Family Hub or that two Family Hub models show the same apps. Samsung provides web manuals specific to Family Hub versions. From the panel, open Settings > Help and contact us > Online manual, or find the downloadable manual for your refrigerator’s exact model. Use that manual and the current Apps menu to confirm which features and downloads are available. Samsung’s Family Hub manual and FAQ page explains how to find the model-specific information.
