Generally, yes—but not perfectly and not in every situation. Open-ear earbuds leave the ear canal open or unsealed, so voices, alarms and other environmental sounds can reach your ears while audio plays. How clearly you distinguish those sounds depends on playback volume, surrounding noise, wind, the earbud’s position and whether it uses air or bone conduction.
Think of open-ear listening as keeping an acoustic path to the outside world, not as a guarantee that you will detect every hazard. If reliable attention is important, lower the volume or pause playback rather than relying on the product’s awareness marketing.

What “open-ear” actually means
Conventional in-ear earbuds sit inside the ear canal and form at least a partial seal. That seal can block outside sound, either passively or through active noise cancellation. Open-ear models are positioned outside the canal instead. Common designs include ear hooks, clip-on units and cuff-style pieces that sit around the outer ear.

Because the canal is not sealed, external sound remains available to your hearing. The audio from the earbuds still competes with that sound, however. A nearby conversation may be easy to follow in a quiet room but difficult beside traffic, a loud gym or strong wind. The result is a balance between the level of your playback and the level and character of the environment.

Bose describes the category as being for “the moments when hearing your environment is just as important as enjoying your audio.” That is a description of the design goal, not a promise that every warning will remain audible.
Why clarity changes from one situation to another
Playback volume
Volume is the most direct control you have. Raising it makes music, podcasts and calls easier to hear, but it also masks quieter external sounds. At a moderate level, a voice or bicycle bell may remain distinct; at a high level, the same sound can blend into the playback. Start lower than you would with sealed earbuds and increase only as much as you need.
Ambient noise
Open-ear earbuds do not remove the noise around you. That is useful when you want environmental access, but it means a loud environment can overwhelm both the outside sound and the earbud output. Continuous noise, such as an aircraft cabin or a busy road, is particularly difficult because it covers a broad range of frequencies. A single nearby voice may be easier to recognize than a warning buried in general noise.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFit and angle
The transducer or speaker must stay in the intended position relative to your ear. If an ear hook shifts during a run or a clip sits too far from the ear, the earbud’s own audio becomes quieter and less intelligible. You may then raise the volume, which further reduces your ability to notice the surroundings. Fit is therefore both a comfort issue and a listening-control issue.
Wind and movement
Wind across the outer ear can create a rushing sound that masks speech and high-pitched alerts. Fast cycling, running downhill and riding in an open vehicle expose the ear to more airflow than walking. A stable fit and a lower playback level help, but neither eliminates wind masking.

Air conduction and bone conduction: two different delivery methods
“Open-ear” describes where the product sits, not one single audio technology. Air-conduction and bone-conduction models can both leave the canal unsealed.
| Aspect | Air-conduction open-ear | Bone-conduction open-ear |
|---|---|---|
| How sound is delivered | A small speaker directs sound through the air toward the ear; the eardrum and middle ear process it in the usual way. | A transducer vibrates the bones around the ear, sending vibrations toward the inner ear. |
| Ear-canal status | Typically outside the canal, with no in-ear seal. | Outside the canal; the design relies on contact with the head rather than an in-ear speaker. |
| What determines ambient audibility | Playback level, speaker position, fit and the amount of outside noise. | Playback level, transducer contact, fit and the amount of outside noise. |
| Typical trade-off to consider | Some designs can provide a more conventional speaker presentation but may leak sound, especially at high volume. | Some listeners may notice a different tonal balance or vibration sensation; sound quality varies by design and fit. |
Shokz’s official FAQ defines air conduction as sending sound through air into the ear canal to vibrate the eardrums, while bone conduction sends vibrations through the temporal bone to the inner ear. Its product range includes both approaches. Those definitions explain the mechanism; they do not establish a universal winner for music quality, speech intelligibility or awareness.

How different open-ear form factors affect use
Ear-hook models
An ear hook anchors the unit around the outer ear. This can provide useful stability for walking or exercise, but glasses, helmets and masks may compete for the same space. Check that the hook does not shift when you turn your head or perspire.
Clip-on models
Clip-on earbuds attach to the ear without entering the canal. Soundcore notes that clip-on products can allow more outside noise and some leakage to nearby people. The angle matters: a small adjustment can make the speaker easier for you to hear without increasing the volume.

- 28H Playtime : 8 hours single charge, 28 hours with case. IP55 waterproof protects against sweat and rain during outdoor running and gym sessions. Bluetooth 6.0 for ultra-stable connection.
Cuff-style models
A cuff wraps around part of the ear and holds the audio hardware outside the opening. This can feel secure for some ears and uncomfortable for others. Long hair, thick frames or a tight helmet may alter the position, so test the complete combination you plan to wear.
What you can expect in common environments
| Situation | Likely experience | Best adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Quiet home or office | Speech and room sounds are usually available, but high playback can still cover a soft voice. | Keep volume low and check for leakage if others are nearby. |
| Walking on a normal street | You may hear vehicles, people and signals, but traffic noise can mask a particular warning. | Use a moderate level, keep one ear visually and aurally attentive, and pause at crossings. |
| Running outdoors | Footfall, wind and changing orientation can make voices and high-frequency alerts less distinct. | Secure the fit, reduce volume and do not assume the design makes road running safe. |
| Busy public transit | Announcements and conversations compete with engine, rail and crowd noise. | Pause playback for announcements or when you need to understand a person. |
| Gym or indoor class | Music and equipment noise can overwhelm both ambient sound and the earbud output. | Lower the level and remove the earbuds when staff instructions matter. |
| Windy or fast-moving activity | Wind turbulence can mask speech and alarms even though the canal is open. | Reduce speed where appropriate, lower playback and use visual checks. |
Beyerdynamic’s support guidance discusses hearing surroundings while running, but that is a company statement about intended use, not independent evidence that every runner will detect every hazard. The same qualification applies to awareness language from other manufacturers.
How to set up and test your own pair
A short, repeatable check is more useful than assuming the product will work the same for everyone. Perform it in a safe place, away from traffic and other hazards.
- Fit the earbuds exactly as you will wear them. Attach the hook, clip or cuff and move your head, jaw and arms. If the unit shifts, correct the position before judging sound.
- Start playback at a low level. Use familiar speech or a podcast first. You are testing intelligibility, not maximum loudness.
- Have another person speak from different positions. Ask them to stand in front, beside and behind you at a normal conversational level. Note whether you can understand the words without stopping the playback.
- Add realistic background noise gradually. Try a fan, a quiet park or another controlled setting. Do not conduct the test beside live traffic, train tracks or other uncontrolled hazards.
- Check movement and wind. Walk, turn your head and, where safe, move at the pace you expect during exercise. If wind or motion makes speech unclear, lower the volume or change the fit.
- Test a pause habit. Confirm that you can pause or lower playback quickly from the controls or your phone. This is the dependable response when you need full attention.
If you cannot reliably understand a nearby person during this controlled check, do not expect the earbuds to preserve awareness in a louder or faster environment.
Leakage and privacy
An unsealed design can let some of your audio escape. Soundcore states that open designs may produce “lighter bass, more outside noise, or some sound leakage in certain situations.” Bose similarly notes that people nearby may hear the audio at very high volume in quiet surroundings. Leakage depends on the model, its position and your volume; it is not a fixed specification shared by every open-ear earbud.

In a quiet office, library or seat beside another passenger, use a lower level and ask whether others can hear it. If privacy is important for a call or podcast, a sealed design may be more appropriate, provided you can still use it safely in that setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety boundaries: awareness is not hazard detection
Manufacturers commonly position open-ear products for walking, workouts and commuting. Shokz says, “Wearing Shokz headphones, you can enjoy your music and calls while staying aware of your surroundings.” That wording describes an intended benefit. It does not prove that a user will detect a specific car horn, bicycle bell, emergency siren or shouted warning in real time.
- Do not treat an open ear as permission to cross a road, cycle in traffic or work around machinery without visual and procedural checks.
- Pause playback before crossing, entering a driveway, boarding transit, listening for an announcement or responding to someone.
- Follow local rules for cycling, driving and workplace hearing protection; an open-ear consumer product may not meet occupational requirements.
- If you have hearing loss, tinnitus or another hearing concern, ask a qualified clinician how loud personal audio may affect you.
Awareness is a practical possibility created by the unsealed fit, not a safety certification.
Troubleshooting when surroundings are hard to hear
The music is covering voices
Lower the playback level first. If speech remains difficult, pause the audio rather than continuing to raise it. A different earbud position may improve the clarity of your own audio without increasing loudness.

The sound disappears during exercise
Adjust the hook, clip or cuff so it remains stable when you turn your head. Sweat, movement and headwear can change the angle. If stability cannot be maintained, the product is a poor match for that activity.
Wind makes everything unclear
Reduce speed where possible, turn away from the airflow and lower playback. Wind noise can remain dominant even with an open canal, so use visual awareness and pause audio when conditions become difficult.
People nearby can hear the audio
Reduce volume and reposition the earbuds. If leakage continues in a quiet shared space, use headphones with a more private fit or choose a different listening method.

- Technology: Decide whether the product uses air conduction or bone conduction, then look for information about its fit and controls rather than assuming “open-ear” specifies the sound method.
- Stability: Choose a hook, clip or cuff that remains in place with your glasses, helmet, hairstyle and planned movement.
- Controls: Confirm that volume and pause controls are easy to operate without reaching for your phone.
- Leakage: Expect some sound escape, particularly at high volume in quiet settings, and consider where you will use the earbuds.
- Environment: Match expectations to your normal noise level. Open-ear access is most useful when outside sound is present but not overwhelming.
- Evidence: Treat awareness language as a design intention. Look for fit and operating guidance, not promises that all hazards will be heard.
The bottom line
Open-ear earbuds can let you hear your surroundings more readily than sealed in-ear earbuds because the ear canal remains open. Clear awareness is conditional: volume, noise, wind, fit, movement and the specific audio technology all matter. Use the lowest comfortable playback level, verify the fit in the environment where you will listen, and pause audio whenever you need dependable attention. No open-ear design guarantees that every external sound will be audible or that an activity is automatically safe.
