FireRed and LeafGreen have no ordinary Celebi encounter or in-game quest that unlocks one. The historical legitimate exceptions require an external distribution route, while Nintendo has separately announced a Pokédex-conditioned Celebi Mystery Gift for the Switch releases once Pokémon HOME support begins in October 2026.
What counts as “without an event”?
If you mean catching Celebi by exploring, completing the story, filling the National Pokédex, visiting the Sevii Islands, or using an ordinary trade in an original GBA copy, the answer is no. Celebi is not a standard FireRed or LeafGreen encounter. The FireRed and LeafGreen Pokémon locations reference lists it as unavailable through standard play and points to external distribution or the Japanese Colosseum Bonus Disc as historical routes.

Those exceptions still depend on an external distribution source or another game and compatible equipment. They are not hidden quests inside FireRed or LeafGreen.
What are the legitimate ways to obtain Celebi?
| Route | What it requires | Does it add a normal GBA encounter? |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary original GBA gameplay | No method is available through standard play. | No. |
| Historical external event distribution | An eligible distribution and means to receive or transfer the Pokémon; availability depended on the event. | No. It is an externally distributed Pokémon. |
| Japanese Pokémon Colosseum Bonus Disc | The Japanese disc, a Japanese Pokémon Colosseum save with all 48 Shadow Pokémon purified, and compatible transfer equipment and games. | No. The disc awards Celebi outside FireRed and LeafGreen. |
| FireRed or LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch | Nintendo says Pokémon HOME support begins in October 2026; completing the respective game’s Pokédex in HOME can earn a special Celebi Mystery Gift. | No. This is a HOME-conditioned gift, not a wild encounter. |
How the Japanese Colosseum Bonus Disc route works
The Japanese Pokémon Colosseum Bonus Disc includes a Relic Stone option that can award Celebi after the associated Japanese Colosseum save has purified all 48 Shadow Pokémon. This is a region-specific legacy route, not a feature unlocked by playing FireRed or LeafGreen alone. Smogon’s Colosseum and XD mechanics guide and Bulbapedia’s Bonus Disc reference describe the disc and eligibility requirements.
#1 Best Overall
- Owning the disc alone is not enough; the save must meet the purification requirement.
- The relevant route uses the Japanese Bonus Disc. Do not assume a disc from another region works.
- Moving Pokémon between a GameCube title and a GBA game requires a compatible transfer setup. See Smogon’s Pokémon transfer guide for the GameCube–GBA context.
What changes for the Nintendo Switch releases?
Nintendo’s official US store listing says Pokémon HOME support for the Switch versions begins in October 2026. It also says completing the Pokédex for the respective game in Pokémon HOME can earn a special Celebi Mystery Gift. That is a different answer for the Switch releases than for the original GBA cartridges.
The listing describes a future start date for HOME support. It establishes Nintendo’s announced condition, but does not establish that the gift can already be claimed before that support begins.
