If you may have been exposed, seek medical advice and focus on stopping further exposure; suspected acute poisoning needs urgent professional assessment. ATSDR says there is no specific antidote for acute cadmium poisoning and that treatment centers on supportive care and preventing additional exposure.
What to do if you may have been exposed
- For a recent or potentially serious exposure, get urgent help. Contact emergency services or a poison center, especially after inhaling cadmium-containing fumes or dust or if you have symptoms. ATSDR’s provider resource, updated June 8, 2026, points to poison-center and toxicology resources: ATSDR. Do not wait for a home test.
- Stop further exposure. Leave the suspected source if it is safe to do so. For ongoing workplace or environmental exposure, ask an occupational-health clinician or relevant public-health authority about investigating and controlling the source.
- Arrange clinical evaluation. Tell the clinician when and how exposure may have occurred, the suspected source, and any symptoms. The appropriate tests and care depend on the exposure route, dose, timing, and your health.
Why a blood test cannot tell you how to detox
Blood cadmium is mainly useful as a marker of recent exposure. It does not reliably measure the total amount stored in the body or predict the clinical outcome, so a result should not be used by itself to decide on treatment. ATSDR explains the roles and limitations of cadmium testing in its cadmium diagnosis and evaluation guidance.

For chronic exposure assessment, a clinician may use a 24-hour urine cadmium test normalized to creatinine. ATSDR identifies this as the best screening and diagnostic test for chronic exposure in appropriate circumstances. Kidney damage can alter urinary cadmium excretion and complicate interpretation, so the result needs clinical context.
Hair testing is not a reliable way to predict cadmium toxicity or occupational exposure: studies have not established a quantitative relationship between hair levels and body burden, and samples can be contaminated. Testing measures exposure; it does not remove cadmium.

Why cadmium does not leave the body quickly
Absorbed cadmium binds tightly in the body and is eliminated slowly, primarily through urine. ATSDR’s archived educational material estimates biological half-lives of 6 to 38 years in the kidneys and 4 to 19 years in the liver. These are broad tissue estimates, not a personal forecast, a blood-clearance timetable, or a reason to wait out a possible exposure without medical advice. What medical treatment can and cannot do
Care depends on the route, severity, and timing of exposure. For serious inhalation exposure, ATSDR describes supportive treatment that can include fluid replacement, oxygen, or mechanical ventilation. These are clinical interventions, not home treatments. ATSDR also says activated charcoal has not been proven effective for cadmium poisoning.

Standard chelation with EDTA, dimercaprol (BAL), or DMSA has generally not proved effective for cadmium poisoning, according to ATSDR. Its cited treatment material warns that BAL is contraindicated because it can increase kidney toxicity. Do not take chelating agents or try to arrange chelation without specialist direction.

What not to use as a blood-cleansing treatment
- Detox supplements or commercial cleanses: They are not established cadmium treatments and cannot be relied on to remove absorbed metal.
- Home blood or urine tests: They may measure exposure, but cannot treat it or replace clinical interpretation.
- DIY chelation or activated charcoal: Neither is a proven consumer method for clearing cadmium; chelation can be harmful in this context.
- Respirators or protective equipment as a “detox”: Appropriate controls may reduce future exposure in some settings, but they do not remove cadmium already absorbed.
