Usually, no. Nintendo’s published policies generally make accidental Nintendo eShop game and downloadable-content purchases final. Nintendo of America says it is “unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases,” while the United States Nintendo Account terms make payments final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. You can still contact the Nintendo Support team for the country or region linked to your account, but treat any refund as discretionary unless you have a separate legal right.
The short answer depends on your account region
Nintendo applies regional terms to digital purchases. The country or region on your Nintendo Account is therefore important when you ask for help. A purchase made on a Switch while traveling is not necessarily governed by the rules of the country where you happened to be standing; support will normally assess the account and transaction details under the relevant regional policy.

Why “I have not downloaded it” is not a guaranteed solution
Physical retail purchases and digital licences are handled differently. Once an eShop transaction is completed, Nintendo’s policies generally treat the payment as final rather than as an order that remains cancellable until the download starts. Japan’s notice is especially explicit: a purchased downloaded product is not refundable even before download or use. Deleting the software from the console also does not reverse the transaction; deletion changes local storage, not the purchase record.

The United Kingdom explains its approach through digital-content cancellation rules. At checkout, the customer consents to Nintendo starting its obligations immediately and acknowledges losing the cancellation right at that point. That wording addresses the statutory cancellation period and is not a promise that support will approve a mistaken-purchase request.
What to do immediately after an accidental purchase
Contacting support is the only practical route for asking Nintendo to review the transaction. It cannot create a refund entitlement that the published policy removes, but it gives Nintendo the information needed to determine whether an authorized or legally required remedy applies.

- Stop using the purchase while you collect the details. Do not launch the game, download additional content or consume in-game items while preparing your request. This does not itself create a refund right; it simply keeps your description accurate and avoids suggesting that you want to keep using content while reversing the charge.
- Identify the exact account and transaction. Have the Nintendo Account email address or account ID, the game or DLC title, purchase date, amount and currency, order or receipt number, and the account’s country or region ready. If the purchase was made by a child or another household member, note who pressed the purchase confirmation and which account was charged.
- Open the regional Nintendo Support channel. Start with the support site or contact method for the account’s region rather than a general channel for another country. Nintendo’s own support guidance directs customers with unresolved situations to contact Nintendo for additional assistance.
- Describe the event precisely. Say whether you selected the wrong title, bought the wrong edition, paid twice, or did not authorize a child’s purchase. Include the date and receipt details, and explain whether the software was downloaded or launched. Do not label the matter a technical defect unless the product actually has a technical problem.
- Ask what remedy is available under the applicable regional policy. You can request a refund review and ask whether another remedy exists, but do not present approval as automatic. The support agent may decline because the transaction falls within the normal final-sale rule.
- Raise mandatory consumer rights when they may apply. If you live in a jurisdiction with digital-content protections, tell support where the account is registered and ask how those rights apply to this transaction. The United States terms expressly preserve refunds required by applicable law; that clause is not a universal promise that every accidental purchase qualifies.
- Keep the case record. Save the receipt, support case number, dates of contact and the wording of any decision. If you need to clarify the account region or a legal-rights question, those records prevent you from having to reconstruct the transaction.
How to explain common mistake scenarios
Wrong game or wrong edition
Name both the product you intended to buy and the product that was charged. For example, explain that you selected the deluxe edition instead of the standard edition, or chose a similarly titled game by mistake. This gives support a factual description without implying that the product is defective.
Duplicate purchase
List both order numbers and the times of the transactions. A duplicate charge is still subject to the regional policy, but separating the two records helps support distinguish a repeated purchase from a second, intentional transaction.

Purchase made by a child
State that a child or other household member made the purchase, identify the Nintendo Account used and confirm who controls the payment method. Do not describe an authorized purchase as fraud. If you genuinely did not authorize the transaction, say so accurately and ask which account-security or payment process Nintendo requires.
Pre-purchase or downloadable content
Include whether the charge was for a pre-purchase, expansion, add-on or other digital item. The United States Nintendo Account policy expressly includes pre-purchases and subscription payments in its final, non-refundable payment language, while Nintendo of America’s support guidance specifically mentions downloaded games and DLC.

What Nintendo’s policies do not promise
No published material covered here states a refund-approval percentage, a guaranteed one-time courtesy refund, a standard response time or a required refund method for accidental eShop purchases. Nintendo’s policies also do not say that every unused purchase will be refunded. Avoid advice claiming that a first request is always accepted, that a download can be cancelled after payment, or that deleting the game automatically voids the charge.

When a legal right may be different from Nintendo’s default rule
Nintendo’s United States terms contain an important qualification: payments are final and non-refundable except as authorized by Nintendo or required by applicable law. That wording leaves room for consumer-protection rules that cannot be waived in a particular jurisdiction. The United Kingdom’s immediate-performance language similarly describes the loss of a cancellation right while preserving rights that law does not permit a trader to exclude.
Whether a legal exception applies depends on facts such as the customer’s location, the account region, the type of digital content and the circumstances of the transaction. Nintendo Support can explain how it handles a request, but it cannot replace independent legal advice. If a significant amount is involved or you believe a mandatory right has been denied, consult the relevant consumer-protection authority or qualified adviser in your jurisdiction.
Preventing another accidental eShop purchase
- Review the title, edition, platform and DLC description on the final checkout screen before confirming payment.
- Keep the Nintendo Account region and payment details accurate so support can match the transaction to the correct policy.
- Use parental controls or purchase restrictions on accounts used by children, and make sure household members know which account is authorized to buy.
- Save receipts and enable the account-security measures available for your Nintendo Account so an unexpected charge can be identified quickly.
- When two games have similar names, verify the publisher, edition and included content before selecting the purchase button.

- What exact game, edition or DLC was charged?
- When did the transaction occur, and what are the order or receipt number and amount?
- Was the content downloaded, launched or used?
- Was the mistake a wrong title, wrong edition, duplicate purchase or unauthorized child purchase?
- Are you relying on a consumer-law right in your jurisdiction, and can you identify the country involved?
Having these answers ready will not guarantee a refund, but it allows the regional support team to evaluate the request without guessing which account or transaction you mean.
