A PlayStation game does not become automatically refundable just because its publisher shuts down online servers. PlayStation’s terms warn that online-mode products may stop working when PSN features or servers are withdrawn and say they will not be refunded. The normal Store cancellation rule is also limited: a digital game or add-on can generally be cancelled within 14 days only if downloading or streaming has not started.
You should still ask PlayStation Support for a case review. Your position may be stronger if the closure removes a major advertised function, the product is faulty, or consumer law in the country where you bought it gives you additional rights.

What PlayStation’s policy says about server shutdowns
Two separate parts of PlayStation’s published terms matter here. The first governs what happens when an online service ends. The second covers ordinary cancellation of a digital purchase.

Server closure is addressed directly
PlayStation’s terms say a publisher may permanently shut down an online server. They warn that “Products for use in online modes may not be useable after PSN features are withdrawn or servers are shutdown and will not be refunded.” The March 2026 terms also state: “Online services are not provided for ever.” Publishers are asked to give advance notice of a shutdown, but advance notice does not create a refund entitlement.

That wording means the platform treats the end of online support as a disclosed possibility rather than an automatic defect. The game may lose matchmaking, leaderboards, downloadable user content, online progression, or other network features while remaining installed on your console. The terms therefore distinguish loss of online functionality from a product that is faulty under the Store’s cancellation policy.
The ordinary digital-game rule is narrower
PlayStation’s cancellation policy says: “You can cancel a game or game add-on purchase within 14 days from the date of purchase and receive a refund, provided that you have not started downloading or streaming it.” Once downloading or streaming has started, the policy says the game or add-on is not eligible for a refund unless it is faulty.
The 14 days run from the purchase date, not from the date a server shutdown is announced. Downloading a title years ago does not reopen that window when online support later ends. A game bought recently but already downloaded is also treated differently from a purchase that has not begun downloading or streaming.

When a refund request has a realistic basis
Eligibility depends on several facts rather than on the shutdown announcement alone. Gather these details before contacting support.
Purchase age and download status
- Within 14 days and not started: This is the clearest policy route. Do not start a download or stream if you are still deciding whether to cancel.
- Within 14 days but already downloaded or streamed: The standard policy normally excludes the purchase unless the product is faulty.
- Older than 14 days: The ordinary cancellation window has passed. You can still request a discretionary review or rely on rights provided by local law, but the Store policy does not promise a refund solely because servers closed.
A demonstrable fault rather than a discontinued feature
PlayStation’s policy preserves an exception for a faulty product. A server shutdown can be frustrating without making every copy of the game faulty under that wording. Your request should explain the concrete failure: for example, a mode that the product description represented as available no longer functions, a required online check prevents the game from launching, or an update has broken advertised features. Do not describe a merely unwanted change as a technical fault unless you can show what fails and when.
The amount of functionality that remains
The practical loss differs by title. Some games retain a complete campaign or other offline modes after network support ends. Others rely on servers for nearly every activity. The less that remains usable, the more important it is to document exactly what you bought and what is now inaccessible; it still does not turn the policy into an automatic refund rule.

What happens to the game after online support ends?
A shutdown notice should identify the features affected and the date they will stop. Read it carefully rather than assuming the whole game disappears.
Offline and single-player modes may continue
Official PlayStation server notices describe titles in which online features end while offline play remains. In the inFAMOUS notice, user-generated-content online features end but the main campaign remains playable. In the Destruction AllStars notice, some single-player Arcade Mode challenges remain available after server support ends. These examples show why the correct question is not simply “Is the game playable?” but “Which purchased functions still work on my edition and platform?”
Online-dependent products can lose their core purpose
If matchmaking, live events, online progression, or server authentication are central to the game, their removal may leave little usable content. Record the exact modes you can no longer access, any error messages, and whether the game reaches an offline menu. Screenshots or a short video can help support staff understand the difference between a closed service and a local hardware problem.

Step-by-step: how to ask PlayStation for a refund review
- Read the shutdown announcement. Note the title, platform, shutdown date, region, and every listed feature that will end. Save a copy or screenshot of the notice and distinguish online functions from modes explicitly said to remain.
- Confirm who sold the product. A purchase from the PlayStation Store is handled by PlayStation Support. A disc bought from a physical retailer is normally a matter for that retailer, while an item purchased directly from a publisher may require the publisher’s support channel. Do not ask the wrong seller to reverse a transaction it did not process.
- Collect transaction details. Have the order number, purchase date, account ID, product name, platform, and payment method ready. For a disc, keep the receipt and edition information. These details let support match the request to the correct transaction.
- Check whether downloading or streaming began. State plainly whether the game was downloaded, streamed, or never started. If it was downloaded, record when you first discovered the affected feature and whether any offline content still works.
- Describe the lost functionality precisely. List each mode or service that stopped working, the date it stopped, and the result when you launch it. Explain whether the shutdown removes the feature that motivated the purchase or leaves a playable campaign.
- Ask for a specific remedy. Request a refund review for the transaction, and identify any alternative you would accept only if support offers one. Do not present the result as guaranteed; ask the agent to assess the case under the Store policy and applicable law.
- Explain any local-law basis. Give the country in which you bought the game and, if you know it, the consumer rule you believe applies to digital content or advertised functionality. PlayStation’s policy says additional rights may exist under applicable local law, and its server notices say statutory rights are not affected.
- Keep the case record. Save the case number, chat transcript, emails, shutdown notice, and screenshots. If the first response is automated or does not address the lost feature, reply with the missing facts and ask for escalation or a new review.

Can you charge back the purchase?
A payment reversal is not the same as a PlayStation refund and is not automatically justified by a server closure. The first practical step is to give the seller a documented opportunity to review the transaction. A bank or card provider may ask whether you contacted the merchant, and an unjustified reversal can create account or payment complications. If PlayStation denies the request, preserve its decision and ask the consumer-protection authority or a qualified adviser in the purchase jurisdiction what escalation route is available.
The seller also matters. A PlayStation Store transaction, a publisher-operated purchase, and a disc bought from a shop involve different contracts. A payment provider cannot restore a closed game server; at most, it handles a dispute under its own rules. Do not describe the purchase as entirely unusable if the shutdown notice confirms that substantial offline content remains.

There is no universal yes-or-no result for every player. PlayStation’s cancellation policy expressly says that additional rights may exist under applicable local law. The server notice likewise says statutory rights are not affected. Those rights can depend on the country of purchase, the seller, the edition, the advertising shown at the time of sale, and whether the digital content still conforms to the contract.
Use the purchase jurisdiction rather than your current travel location when explaining the issue. Also identify whether you bought a PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, or another edition, because shutdown notices can apply to particular platforms or features. If you need a definitive legal assessment, contact the consumer-protection authority serving the purchase jurisdiction or obtain advice from a qualified local adviser; support agents cannot determine every country’s law in a general response.
Common mistakes that weaken a request
- Waiting without checking the date: A 14-day cancellation period is measured from purchase, so calculate it before contacting support.
- Ignoring the download condition: The policy treats an unstarted download or stream differently from content already accessed.
- Calling every shutdown a fault: Explain the specific malfunction and separate it from the announced retirement of an online service.
- Failing to test offline play: Note which campaigns, local modes, or challenges remain. This is part of the value you received and helps support assess the actual loss.
- Contacting the wrong seller: A retailer that sold a disc cannot refund a digital Store transaction, and PlayStation cannot normally reverse a purchase it did not process.
- Making a vague request: Include the transaction, shutdown date, affected modes, download status, and requested remedy in the first message.
- Assuming an announcement changes the contract automatically: The policy already warns that online services are not provided forever, so the announcement alone does not establish an entitlement.
A concise message you can send to support
Adapt this wording to your facts:
I purchased [game and edition] on [date] through the PlayStation Store in [country]. The publisher’s shutdown notice says [online service] ended or will end on [date]. I can no longer use [specific modes], while [offline modes] remain or do not remain available. The game was [downloaded/streamed/not downloaded], and my transaction number is [number]. Please review whether this transaction qualifies for a refund or another remedy under the PlayStation cancellation policy and the consumer rights applicable to my purchase.
Keep the bracketed fields as ordinary details in your message; they are not substitutes for evidence. Attach the order record and the shutdown notice if the support channel permits attachments.
Bottom line for different players
If you bought the game more than 14 days ago, downloaded it, and the only change is that an announced online service has ended, PlayStation’s published terms do not promise a refund. If you have not started downloading or streaming and are still within 14 days, use the normal cancellation route. If the game is faulty, the closure removes nearly all of the purchased functionality, or your country gives stronger statutory protection, submit a detailed support request and explain those facts. The outcome must be assessed against the particular transaction and local law.
