Can You Get a Flu Shot While Sick, Pregnant, or Taking Other Vaccines? 2025–26 Guidance

Usually, yes. A mild cold or other minor illness normally does not prevent a flu shot, and pregnancy is a reason to receive an age-appropriate influenza vaccine. You can generally receive an injectable flu vaccine at the same visit as Tdap, RSV, or the current COVID-19 vaccine. The situations that need a clinician or vaccinator’s review are moderate or severe acute illness, a previous severe allergic reaction to a flu-vaccine product or ingredient, Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) within six weeks of a previous flu vaccine, and recent use of certain influenza antivirals if a live nasal-spray vaccine is being considered.

Fast answers to the questions people ask

Situation What current U.S. guidance says
Mild cold, minor diarrhea, or another low-grade illness Usually compatible with vaccination; these are not influenza-vaccine contraindications or precautions.
Moderate or severe acute illness A precaution, with or without fever. The vaccinator should assess whether to vaccinate now or wait until recovery.
Pregnancy Receive an age-appropriate inactivated or recombinant influenza vaccine during any trimester. Do not use the live attenuated nasal-spray vaccine (LAIV3).
Flu vaccine and COVID-19, Tdap, or RSV vaccine They can generally be given at the same visit. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says coadministration does not reduce efficacy.
Recent Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or another flu antiviral The timing issue mainly concerns LAIV3. CDC’s 2025–26 intervals are 48 hours after oseltamivir or zanamivir, five days after peramivir, and 17 days after baloxavir.
Egg allergy Egg allergy alone is not a reason to skip an otherwise appropriate influenza vaccine.
Severe allergy to a previous flu vaccine or ingredient The exact product may be contraindicated or require a precaution; the vaccination provider must review the product and reaction.
GBS within six weeks of a previous flu vaccine A precaution requiring an individualized risk–benefit discussion.

Can you get a flu shot if you have a cold or are sick?

Mild illness usually does not require postponement

A mild upper-respiratory infection, such as a typical cold, is generally not a reason to delay influenza vaccination. CDC general principles also treat minor diarrhea and other low-grade illnesses as compatible with vaccination. A mild illness does not make the vaccine ineffective, and waiting is not routinely necessary simply because you have a runny nose, mild sore throat, or limited cough.

Moderate or severe illness is a precaution

CDC and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) list “moderate or severe acute illness with or without fever” as a precaution for influenza vaccination. A precaution is not an automatic permanent prohibition. It means the vaccinator should evaluate your current condition and decide whether the benefits of vaccinating today outweigh the possibility that vaccination could complicate assessment of an acute illness or that you need urgent care first. Many people are asked to wait until they are recovering.

Tell the vaccinator when you are substantially unwell

Before the shot, report fever, breathing difficulty, dehydration, a recent or current hospitalization, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. The cited guidance does not set a universal thermometer cutoff that determines eligibility. Severity, the suspected infection, your medical history, and the setting all matter more than a single temperature number.

If you are struggling to breathe, confused, faint, unable to keep fluids down, or showing signs of severe dehydration, seek medical care rather than going straight to a routine vaccination appointment. A clinician can address the illness and determine when vaccination should occur.

Can you get a flu vaccine while pregnant?

Pregnancy is an indication for vaccination

CDC/ACIP recommends an age-appropriate influenza vaccine during pregnancy. Influenza can cause more serious respiratory illness during pregnancy, so pregnancy is not a reason to defer seasonal vaccination. CDC reports that vaccination during pregnancy is associated with reduced risk of respiratory illness and influenza in pregnant or postpartum women and in their infants during the first months of life.

Choose an inactivated or recombinant vaccine

During pregnancy, use an inactivated influenza vaccine or a recombinant influenza vaccine appropriate for your age and the current season. Do not use LAIV3, the live attenuated vaccine delivered as a nasal spray, during pregnancy. If a clinic offers more than one formulation, tell staff that you are pregnant so they can select a product authorized for you.

Trimester does not create a routine waiting period

Current guidance recommends influenza vaccination during pregnancy without directing people to wait for a particular trimester. Your obstetric clinician can help if you have a complicated pregnancy, a history of vaccine reactions, or another condition that changes the usual assessment.

Can you get a flu shot at the same time as COVID-19, Tdap, or RSV vaccine?

Same-visit administration is generally acceptable

An injectable influenza vaccine can generally be administered during the same visit as other recommended vaccines. In pregnancy, ACOG specifically states: “The influenza vaccine can safely be administered at the same time as other vaccines recommended during pregnancy.” Its guidance names Tdap, RSV, and the current COVID-19 vaccine and says that giving them together does not impact vaccine efficacy.

What to expect at a combined appointment

Each vaccine is administered according to its product instructions, usually at separate injection sites. Receiving several vaccines in one visit can cause more than one sore arm or temporary fatigue, but those expected effects are not a reason to separate doses unless your clinician identifies a specific concern. Tell the provider about every vaccine you have already received, including the date and product if known, so the correct seasonal and pregnancy schedule can be followed.

When spacing may still be discussed

Spacing is not usually required just because the vaccines are different. A provider may recommend a different plan when you are moderately or severely ill, when a prior reaction needs investigation, when a product-specific interval applies, or when another vaccine has its own timing requirement. That is an individualized scheduling decision, not a general rule that flu and COVID-19 vaccines must be separated.

Can you get a flu vaccine after taking Tamiflu or another antiviral?

The concern is mainly the live nasal vaccine

Recent influenza antiviral treatment matters particularly if the planned product is LAIV3. Because LAIV3 is a live vaccine that must replicate in the nasal passages to produce an immune response, certain antivirals can interfere with it. This timing issue does not generally prevent you from receiving an inactivated or recombinant injectable influenza vaccine.

CDC’s 2025–26 intervals for LAIV3

Recent antiviral Interval before LAIV3
Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) or zanamivir Wait at least 48 hours after the last dose.
Peramivir Wait at least five days after treatment.
Baloxavir Wait at least 17 days after treatment.

These intervals are for the 2025–26 season guidance and apply to the live nasal-spray formulation. Give the vaccinator the exact antiviral name, dose dates, and whether treatment is complete. If you need vaccination before the LAIV3 interval has passed, ask whether an inactivated or recombinant injectable vaccine is appropriate instead.

Which medical history items require extra review?

Severe allergic reaction to a flu vaccine or component

A history of anaphylaxis after a previous influenza vaccine or to a component can be a contraindication to one formulation or a precaution for another. The answer depends on which product caused the reaction and which product is being considered; “flu vaccine allergy” is not a single blanket category. Bring the name of the vaccine, the date, and a description of symptoms if you have them. Hives alone, fainting, or a sore arm are not the same as anaphylaxis, but the provider should still hear about any prior reaction.

Guillain–Barré syndrome after a prior flu vaccine

GBS occurring within six weeks after a previous influenza vaccination is listed as a precaution. It calls for an individualized discussion of the potential benefits of vaccination, your risk from influenza, the details of the earlier GBS episode, and whether another cause was identified. Do not make this decision from a general internet checklist; discuss it with the vaccination provider or your clinician.

Egg allergy

CDC recommends an otherwise appropriate influenza vaccine for people with egg allergy. Egg allergy alone is not a reason to skip vaccination. As with every vaccination, the provider should be prepared to manage a rare allergic reaction and should know about any previous severe vaccine reaction.

A practical decision guide before your appointment

  1. Assess how sick you are. A mild cold or minor diarrhea usually does not require postponement. If you have moderate or severe acute illness, with or without fever, call the vaccination site and ask for an assessment.
  2. State whether you are pregnant. Ask for an inactivated or recombinant influenza vaccine, not LAIV3. Pregnancy does not require waiting for a particular trimester under current guidance.
  3. List every vaccine due. Ask whether flu, COVID-19, Tdap, and RSV vaccines can be given in the same visit. In pregnancy, ACOG supports coadministration of these recommended vaccines.
  4. Report recent antivirals. Give the drug name and last dose. For LAIV3, the 2025–26 intervals are 48 hours after oseltamivir or zanamivir, five days after peramivir, and 17 days after baloxavir.
  5. Explain prior reactions and GBS. Mention anaphylaxis to a flu vaccine or component and any GBS episode within six weeks of a prior flu vaccination. Ask which formulation is safe for your history.
  6. Bring reliable records when possible. A vaccine card, pharmacy record, discharge summary, or medication list can prevent unnecessary delays and help the provider choose the correct product.

What the provider may decide on the day

  • Vaccinate today: common when illness is minor, no product-specific contraindication is present, and the selected vaccine fits your age, pregnancy status, and history.
  • Use a different influenza formulation: for example, selecting an injectable inactivated or recombinant vaccine instead of LAIV3 during pregnancy or soon after an antiviral.
  • Wait and reassess: often considered for moderate or severe acute illness, especially when symptoms are worsening or could require medical evaluation.
  • Consult a clinician or review the product labeling: appropriate after a severe allergic reaction or GBS within six weeks of a prior flu vaccine.

Ask which formulation is being offered and why if the recommendation differs from what you expected. The formulation, not just the words “flu shot,” determines several of the precautions above.

When to seek medical advice instead of routine vaccination

Contact a clinician or vaccination provider before attending if you are pregnant and significantly ill, have breathing difficulty or dehydration, were recently hospitalized, have a rapidly worsening infection, had anaphylaxis to a previous influenza vaccine or ingredient, had GBS within six weeks of a prior flu vaccine, or recently took an influenza antiviral and are being offered LAIV3. These situations need a product- and patient-specific decision.

For the 2025–26 U.S. influenza season, the central rule is straightforward: minor illness generally does not block vaccination, pregnancy favors vaccination with a non-live product, and same-day administration with recommended COVID-19, Tdap, or RSV vaccines is generally acceptable. The exceptions are defined by illness severity, vaccine formulation, recent antiviral timing, and specific medical history.
