Backlight bleed usually cannot be eliminated with a setting or a generic fix: it comes from uneven light distribution in an LCD panel. You can make it less noticeable by adjusting brightness, viewing position, and room lighting. If it remains conspicuous during ordinary use, document what you see and ask the device maker to assess repair or replacement options; the outcome depends on the model, warranty, region, and manufacturer’s decision.
What backlight bleed is—and what it is not
An LCD uses a backlight behind its display layers. Uneven light may show around the edges or in patches, especially when the screen displays dark content in a dim room. BenQ notes that light leakage can occur on edge-lit and other backlit LCD monitors, and that it becomes more noticeable as screen illumination increases. Lowering brightness or gamma may reduce its visibility, but does not correct the underlying panel condition. BenQ’s explanation of monitor backlight leakage also notes that some bleed may fall within a manufacturer’s uniformity specifications.

Distinguish it from IPS glow
IPS glow can look similar, but its appearance changes with viewing angle and distance. Dell describes light leakage as more constant when you change angle or distance, though its location may vary around the screen. Check from your normal sitting position before treating an edge glow as a defect. Dell’s IPS glow and light leakage guidance explains this distinction.
How to check whether it is a real problem
Judge the display under the conditions in which you normally use it, not only in a pitch-black room with a fully black screen. Darkness can exaggerate the effect. Dell’s inspection guidance gives different lighting conditions for its products: 150–200 lux for laptop inspection, 150 lux for ordinary monitors, and 70 lux for gaming monitors. - Look at the screen from your usual position in ordinary room lighting. Check both dark and bright content.
- Change your viewing angle and distance. A glow that shifts noticeably may be IPS glow rather than light leakage.
- Adjust brightness up and down. Note whether the bright areas change or remain conspicuous.
- If practical, compare the same image on another display of the same model at a similar brightness. A marked difference can help explain the issue to support, but does not by itself determine warranty coverage.
- If the problem persists, take a photo in normal room light and record the device model and warranty details. Dell recommends providing support with a photo when the issue remains visible under normal conditions.
What you can try safely
Make low-risk viewing adjustments
- Set the screen angle, height, and distance for your normal viewing position; use ambient room light rather than judging only in darkness.
- Reduce brightness or gamma to a comfortable level if that makes the unevenness less distracting. These changes affect visibility, not the panel itself.
- For the monitors covered by its IPS troubleshooting article, Dell suggests allowing about 30 minutes of warm-up before making adjustments and using roughly 30–50% of maximum brightness as a starting point. This is Dell-specific troubleshooting guidance, not a universal brightness recommendation.
LG’s monitor guidance likewise points to adjustment and assessment rather than a user-performed panel repair.
Avoid pressure or improvised repairs
Do not press or massage the panel, open the display, apply cleaners to try to move light leakage, or buy a replacement panel without model-specific advice. The support guidance available for this issue does not establish a universal repair method or cost. Ask the maker what inspection and service options apply to your exact device before buying parts or replacing the screen.

When to contact the manufacturer
Contact the device maker if bright spots are clearly visible in ordinary room lighting, remain conspicuous after brightness adjustments, interfere with comfortable use, or look substantially worse than on a comparable same-model screen. Dell lists these as reasons to contact its technical support for its laptop displays; they are not universal warranty rules. Share the photo, model, purchase or warranty information, and the viewing conditions in which the issue appears.
