Why the Fishing Rod does not work as a fishing tool
The Fishing Rod is a common miscellaneous item. Its entry lists its main use as bartering or sale, not as equipment for catching anything. Its flavor text reads, “Rusted and slick with grime. The lure may be more valuable than the rod itself.” That line is descriptive writing, not a developer statement explaining why fishing was left out.

In the game’s item listings, the rod is found “throughout the game as set-dressing and random loot.” That makes it a collectible or sellable object you may pick up while exploring. It does not open a fishing interaction at the water’s edge.
Bait and fishing spots
Community-maintained item entries for Baldur’s Gate 3 do not describe bait types, bait sources, casting controls, or any location marked as a place to fish. Searches for “BG3 bait” or “fishing spots” usually come from players who assume a rod implies a minigame. Searching shorelines for a fishing spot will not produce one.

Some guides for other games describe bait, casting, and spot rules. None of that applies here. Do not carry those mechanics over to Baldur’s Gate 3.
Fishing Rod of Alertness is a different item
Despite the name, the Fishing Rod of Alertness is not a fishing tool either. It is an uncommon miscellaneous item tied to the Surprised condition. Its listed effect reads, “The wielder of this rod cannot be Surprised, unless something unexpected happens.” The community entry adds that, as written, the item cannot actually prevent being Surprised. Mattis sells it at his shop in the Last Light Inn.

What to do with fish and rods in your inventory
- Use a Fish as Camp Supplies when you need supplies; its listed value is 4.
- Sell or barter the ordinary Fishing Rod, since its listed use is trade.
- Do not expect the rod to start a minigame, reveal a hidden spot, or require bait.
- If you want to test the Surprised-related effect of the Alertness rod, check the item text in your own game, because the community entry says the protection is not absolute.
Scope of this answer
This conclusion rests on community-maintained item entries, last edited 12 September 2026 for the ordinary Fishing Rod and 13 September 2026 for the Fishing Rod of Alertness, not on official Larian documentation. It covers the base game. Player-made mods can add mechanics that the base game lacks, and any such mod would work outside the behavior described here.
Real-world fishing gear, bait, or location guides will not help with the in-game question.
