Resting at a Lantern revives non-boss enemies, allowing a clear-and-rest loop for Catalysts. The seven named Oathbound guards are different: they are quest encounters, and no cited source confirms that their emblems or Mysterious Stone Pyramids respawn for repeatable loot. Treat each named guard as one-time progression unless the current game build demonstrates otherwise.
Two different enemy types are called “Eternal Guards”
Most confusion comes from using one name for two separate activities:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Named Oathbound guards: seven encounters tied to The Oathbound quest. They provide the quest emblems and Mysterious Stone Pyramids needed to assemble the completion slab.
- Ordinary, non-boss Eternal Guardsmen: regular enemies that can be revived by resting at a Lantern. These are the documented farming targets.
The practical answer is therefore conditional. You can repeatedly farm ordinary guards for Catalysts. You should not plan an infinite loop around the seven named Oathbound encounters, because the available guides describe their locations and quest rewards but do not publish a repeatable respawn rule for those rewards.
The seven named Oathbound guards are quest checkpoints
The Oathbound guides place one named guard in each of seven regions. The encounters are not described as missable, and the complete set forms a fixed progression rather than a conventional currency farm.

Collecting all seven emblems and pyramids produces the slab used to finish The Oathbound. Because the sources do not explicitly state “these never respawn,” the careful wording is that repeatable quest loot is unconfirmed. Do not reset a named encounter expecting a second emblem or pyramid unless your current version visibly proves that behavior.
How to farm ordinary Eternal Guardsmen
The mechanics reference gives a clear reset rule: resting at a Lantern revives all non-boss enemies. That creates a reliable loop whenever a group of ordinary guards is close enough to a Lantern to make the travel worthwhile.
- Rekindle or select the nearest Lantern. Use the Lantern you intend to return to after each clear. Rekindling also establishes the checkpoint used if you die.
- Clear the nearby ordinary guards. Confirm that the targets are regular, non-boss enemies rather than one of the named Oathbound encounters. Collect the Catalysts they leave behind.
- Return to the Lantern. Avoid carrying a large unspent balance through additional encounters when the route is dangerous.
- Rest at the Lantern. Resting fully restores health and Nephtoglobin and revives all non-boss enemies according to the mechanics reference.
- Repeat the clear-and-rest cycle. The loop is limited by travel time, combat risk and the value of the local payout, not by a published global timer.
- Spend or bank Catalysts regularly. If you die while carrying them, they are dropped at the death location and can be lost permanently after a second death.
This method does not reset the seven named Oathbound rewards by implication. The Lantern rule applies to non-boss enemies; it is not evidence that quest-specific loot is renewable.

Is there a 90-second Eternal Guard respawn timer?
A 90-second respawn figure is circulated for the Outer Courtyard in a 2026 community build guide. That figure is not an official publisher statistic, and the guide does not establish that the same interval applies to every region, platform or later patch. Present it as an unverified community observation, not a guaranteed timer.
The most dependable reset mechanic in the available material is still Lantern resting. If an Outer Courtyard pack appears before the claimed interval, the practical test is whether resting revives the non-boss guards; there is no need to wait for a separate stopwatch-based timer when the Lantern loop works.
Patch changes, platform differences and inconsistent use of “Eternal Guard” can all produce different results. A player who sees no enemies after resting should first verify that the targets are non-boss guards, that the correct Lantern was used and that the encounter is not a one-time quest interaction.

What do Eternal Guards drop?
Quest rewards from named guards
Each of the seven named Oathbound encounters contributes an emblem and a Mysterious Stone Pyramid. Those seven pairs are progression items for The Oathbound, not a documented recurring currency source. The Fortress objective is handled as corpse loot rather than a standard duel, but it belongs to the same seven-item set.

A MetaBot.GG guide attributes a payout of 1,200–2,700 Catalysts per Eternal Guardsman to PC launch build 25907482, using data collected in October 2026. That is a build-specific range, not a promise for every platform or future patch.
A separate 2026 Valor Mortis Wiki community build guide claims 8–12 Catalysts per kill and pairs that figure with the claimed 90-second Outer Courtyard respawn. The guide’s unit and collection method are unclear, so this lower-confidence figure must not be combined mathematically with the 1,200–2,700 range. They may refer to different enemy variants, measurement methods or terminology.

Death, Lantern checkpoints and lost Catalysts
Death has two separate consequences that matter to farming. First, you respawn at the last Lantern you rekindled. Second, all carried Catalysts fall at the location where you died. You must return there to retrieve them. If you die again before recovering the dropped Catalysts, they are gone permanently.
That rule changes the best farming rhythm. A route that produces a large payout but requires a hazardous trek back may be worse than a shorter loop with a smaller visible reward. Rest and bank Catalysts before attempting an unfamiliar path, a boss-adjacent pull or a difficult traversal section.
- Rekindle the Lantern before beginning a serious farming session.
- Keep the return path clear before collecting a large payout.
- After a death, prioritize recovery rather than starting another fight.
- If recovery would require a second high-risk attempt, reassess your route; a second death permanently erases the dropped Catalysts.
Which farming route should you choose?
Use the following decision framework rather than chasing an unverified timer:
Best Value
| Situation | Best target | Why | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| You still need Oathbound progression | The named guard required by your route | Each encounter supplies a unique emblem and pyramid for the seven-item slab | Assuming the quest reward can be farmed again |
| You need repeatable currency | Nearby ordinary non-boss guards | Lantern rest provides a documented reset | Carrying Catalysts into unnecessary fights |
| You are testing Outer Courtyard efficiency | Outer Courtyard ordinary guards | A community guide reports a 90-second figure | The timer and 8–12 payout are unverified and may not apply to your build |
| You are recovering from a death | The shortest safe path to the death site | Dropped Catalysts disappear after another death | Detouring into revived enemies before recovery |
Traversal time is part of the payout. A theoretical high-yield pack is not efficient if reaching it consumes more time or exposes you to repeated deaths. Compare routes by enemy type, reset method, measured payout in your own build, travel time, combat risk and whether the activity advances the Oathbound quest.
Troubleshooting: why a guard may not return
The guard was a named Oathbound encounter
Named quest guards are not covered by the documented non-boss revival rule. Check your quest inventory for the emblem and Mysterious Stone Pyramid before assuming the encounter failed to reset.
You rested at the wrong Lantern
Return to the Lantern nearest the pack, rest there and approach the original area again. A checkpoint that was merely passed but not rekindled also will not provide the expected death return point.

The enemy is classified as a boss
The mechanics reference specifies non-boss enemies. A boss or special quest interaction may follow a different reset policy even if it resembles an Eternal Guardsman.
Your numbers do not match a guide
Record the game version, platform, enemy variant and number of kills. The 1,200–2,700 range and the separate 8–12 community figure come from different sources and should not be merged. A patch or terminology difference can explain a mismatch.
Practical checklist
- Identify whether the target is one of the seven named Oathbound guards or an ordinary non-boss guard.
- For quest progress, collect all seven emblems and Mysterious Stone Pyramids; the Fortress objective is looted from a corpse.
- For farming, rekindle a nearby Lantern, clear the pack, return, rest and clear again.
- Do not advertise a universal 90-second timer; it is a community build-guide claim for the Outer Courtyard.
- Treat the 1,200–2,700 and 8–12 Catalyst figures as separate, differently sourced observations.
- Spend or bank Catalysts before risky travel, because a second death before recovery destroys the dropped balance.
The dependable conclusion is narrow but useful: Lantern resting supports repeatable farming of ordinary non-boss Eternal Guardsmen, while the seven named Oathbound encounters should be treated as one-time quest progression until the game itself confirms otherwise.
