No. Google does not support dual-booting ChromeOS Flex with macOS. A supported installation takes over the Mac’s internal drive, while the supported way to try Flex without disturbing macOS is to start it from an installer USB. That live session is temporary and has limited storage, but it lets you check whether Flex works on your exact Mac model before making any permanent change.
If you install Flex on the internal drive, the existing data—including macOS, applications, settings, and files—is erased, and Google says data erased during installation cannot be recovered. Treat the live USB as the evaluation path and internal installation as an operating-system replacement, not as a second boot option.

What Google supports on an Intel Mac
Google’s ChromeOS Flex FAQ, accessed October 13, 2026, states: “Dual booting is not supported on ChromeOS Flex devices.” That rules out presenting a partition, bootloader modification, or forum workaround as a supported macOS/Flex configuration. An unofficial arrangement might be described elsewhere, but it is outside Google’s support model and cannot be treated as a reliable installation method.

| Path | What happens to macOS and your data | How long Flex runs | Main limitation or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boot from the ChromeOS Flex USB installer | The internal macOS installation remains in place. | Temporary; Flex runs from the USB environment. | Storage and performance are limited, and the USB contents are erased when the installer is created. |
| Install ChromeOS Flex to the Mac | The target system drive is erased, replacing the existing operating system and files. | Persistent, provided the Mac is compatible. | There is no supported macOS/Flex dual boot, and erased files are not recoverable according to Google. |
The choice is therefore about risk and permanence, not about selecting a hidden third “dual-boot” mode. Live boot keeps the Mac intact but is temporary. Installation gives you a resident Flex system but removes the current installation from that drive. In practical terms, choose the USB session when you want to test hardware or use Flex temporarily. Choose installation only when you have decided to give up the current macOS installation on that Mac and have a verified backup of anything you need.
Check the exact Mac before making an installer
“Intel Mac” is not a compatibility guarantee. ChromeOS Flex support is model-specific, and Google guarantees functionality only for models on its certified-model list. A non-certified model may boot, but performance, individual hardware functions, and stability are not guaranteed. Check the complete model identifier and year against Google’s current list rather than relying on a broad description such as “2015 MacBook Pro.” Different screen sizes, processors, firmware revisions, and wireless hardware can matter.
Certification is also not a promise that every experience will match a Chromebook. It is the best indication that Google has tested that model. For a non-certified Mac, the USB trial is especially important because it can expose practical problems before you erase anything. If the certified list changes, use the current list at the time you act rather than an old forum table.
Google’s baseline requirements
- An Intel or AMD x86-64-bit-compatible processor.
- At least 4 GB of RAM.
- At least 16 GB of internal storage.
- Ability to boot from USB.
These are minimum conditions, not a promise that every feature will work. A Mac that meets them but is not certified can still have problems with graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, sleep, cameras, trackpads, function keys, or other hardware. Verify the model first, then use the USB session to test the functions that matter to you. The storage figure describes the internal target requirement; it does not make the USB live environment a full-capacity replacement for an installed system.
Prepare the USB carefully
Google requires an 8 GB or larger USB drive for the installer. Creating the installer erases the drive’s contents, so copy anything important from it before you begin. The USB is the one direct hardware expense for the documented try-it-live path; no paid software or subscription is required. Google also notes that some USB drives may not work as installers, including cases in which SanDisk drives have failed. Do not assume that a particular capacity or brand will succeed. If the creation process fails, try another compatible drive and consult Google’s current known-issues guidance.
Use a drive with enough free capacity for the installer process, but do not put irreplaceable files on it. The installer-writing step is destructive to that removable drive even though merely booting the finished installer does not intentionally erase the Mac’s internal disk. Keep the installer clearly labeled so you do not confuse it with a backup disk.
The computer used to create the installer does not have to be the Mac on which you will test Flex. You can prepare the USB on another compatible computer, then take it to the target Mac. No paid software or subscription is required for the documented live-boot route.

How to try ChromeOS Flex without erasing macOS
This is the supported way to answer “Will Flex work on my Mac?” while retaining the existing operating system. The session is useful for hardware checks and short-term exploration, not as a full replacement for an installed system.
- Identify the Mac. In macOS, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Record the model name, screen size, processor generation, and year, then compare that exact model with Google’s certified-model list.
- Back up important Mac data anyway. Live boot should not install anything by itself, but a current backup protects you from choosing the wrong disk or proceeding to installation accidentally. Make sure the backup is separate from the installer USB.
- Obtain an empty USB drive of at least 8 GB. Move any files you want to keep elsewhere. The installer-creation process will erase this USB drive.
- Create the ChromeOS Flex installer. Follow Google’s current ChromeOS Flex installer instructions on the computer you are using to prepare the drive. Select the ChromeOS Flex image and the correct USB device, and confirm the erase warning before writing the installer.
- Shut down the Intel Mac completely. Insert the newly created USB installer before starting it again. Keep other removable drives disconnected so the startup choices are easier to identify and you do not accidentally select a different boot disk.
- Open Apple’s startup manager. Turn on the Mac and immediately hold the Option key, the key beside Command. Continue holding it until the startup-volume screen appears.
- Select the USB entry. Google’s Mac troubleshooting guidance says the entry can appear as EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex. Choose the entry that corresponds to the inserted installer and continue.
- Use the live environment first. Do not choose an option that installs to the internal drive if your goal is to preserve macOS. Test Wi-Fi, audio, display brightness, keyboard and trackpad behavior, cameras, sleep and wake, external displays, and any other hardware you depend on. Test both battery and charger behavior if those matter to your use.
- Return to macOS when finished. Shut down or restart, remove the USB drive, and use the normal internal macOS startup volume. If the Mac does not show its usual disk, repeat startup with Option and select the macOS volume.
What to test during the live session
Open the browser and connect to several networks if possible. Check the built-in speakers, headphone output, microphone, camera, brightness controls, keyboard shortcuts, trackpad gestures, Bluetooth devices, USB accessories, external monitors, lid-close sleep, wake, and shutdown. If you rely on a particular wireless adapter, dock, printer, or accessibility device, test that exact hardware rather than assuming a similar model will behave the same way.
Keep notes about failures and delays. A live session can show that a component is unsupported, but it cannot guarantee that an internal installation will have identical performance. USB speed, available memory, and the limited live storage affect the experience. Treat the results as a compatibility check, not a promise of Chromebook-level support.
What the live session can and cannot tell you
Running from USB confirms that the Mac can start the Flex environment and gives you a practical view of hardware support. It does not prove that an internal installation will have identical performance, and the USB environment has limited storage. It is therefore best for temporary exploration, troubleshooting, and compatibility checks rather than daily use over an extended period. Changes made in a live session should not be treated as a durable workstation setup, and removing the USB ends that Flex environment without changing macOS.

What installing ChromeOS Flex actually does
Installation is not a second entry beside macOS. It writes Flex to the target internal drive and removes the existing contents. Google describes the erasure as complete: programs, settings, and personal files are deleted, and files erased during installation are not recoverable. This is why a backup is a prerequisite, not an optional precaution.
Use this checklist before installation
- Confirm that replacing macOS is your intended outcome; there is no supported rollback through a dual-boot menu.
- Copy documents, photos, browser data, encryption keys, licenses, and any other needed information to a separate backup destination.
- Verify that the backup can actually be opened from another computer or a recovery process.
- Record passwords and two-factor recovery methods that currently depend on the Mac.
- Check the exact Mac model against Google’s certified list and note any model-specific limitations.
- Keep the installer USB connected and make sure you know which disk is the internal drive before confirming an install.
- Disconnect unrelated external disks so the installer’s disk-selection step is less ambiguous.
- Ensure you have another computer or recovery route available if the Mac later needs troubleshooting.
Installation decision
After the live test, install only if the Mac’s hardware works well enough for your needs and you accept using Flex as the sole operating system on that drive. If any essential component fails in the live session, stop there; installation will not turn unsupported hardware into supported hardware. If you need both macOS and another operating system, keep macOS and use a solution that explicitly supports that arrangement instead of treating Flex as one.
Do not interpret a successful USB boot as permission to partition the internal disk yourself. Google’s unsupported-dual-boot statement still applies even when a Mac can technically start more than one bootable volume. Partitioning or replacing boot files can create additional recovery work without producing a configuration Google will support.

Mac startup behavior and troubleshooting
The USB does not appear
Restart and hold Option immediately after pressing the power button. Confirm that the USB was created successfully and is connected directly to the Mac rather than through a hub or adapter. Try a different USB drive if the installer creation reported an error or the startup manager never lists the device. The target Mac must support USB startup; meeting the RAM and storage minimums alone is not sufficient.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf the startup manager lists several volumes, remove other removable media and identify the installer by its EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex label. Re-create the installer if neither label appears. Avoid erasing or repartitioning the internal Mac disk merely because the USB is missing; first resolve the installer or startup-recognition issue.
The entry is called EFI Boot
That label is expected in Google’s Mac instructions. Select EFI Boot when it is the entry associated with the ChromeOS Flex installer. On some Macs the label instead appears as ChromeOS Flex. The wording does not mean that macOS and Flex are installed side by side; it identifies the bootable USB environment or installed Flex volume.
Black screen or a long delay after installation
Google documents cases in which a Mac shows a black screen or takes a long time to start after Flex installation. One possible cause is that the Mac’s logic board continues looking for the former OS X or macOS installation device. The appropriate response depends on the exact Mac model and the current Google troubleshooting instructions. Do not apply a generic firmware or NVRAM reset sequence blindly, particularly on older Apple hardware with model-specific cautions. If the Mac eventually reaches Flex, note the delay and check the model-specific guidance before changing firmware settings.
Some hardware does not work
ChromeOS Flex is designed for a broad range of third-party computers, not only Chromebooks. On Macs and other non-Chromebook devices, Google does not guarantee every hardware function. A failed camera, unusual graphics behavior, missing audio, unreliable sleep, or non-working wireless adapter is a compatibility issue to evaluate against the certified-model information, not evidence that a dual-boot configuration would solve it.
ChromeOS Flex is not identical to ChromeOS on a Chromebook
Installing Flex does not give an Intel Mac all of the security and hardware characteristics of a Chromebook. Google says ChromeOS Flex devices lack the Google security chip and ChromeOS verified boot. Some Chromebook-specific hardware functions are also unavailable or unsupported on third-party computers. If your decision depends on verified boot, a security chip, or a particular Chromebook feature, confirm that requirement separately; Flex on a Mac should not be assumed to provide it.
Why Boot Camp is not the answer
Apple’s Boot Camp documentation describes installing Windows 10 and switching between Windows and macOS on supported Intel Macs. That documentation is useful evidence that Apple supports a particular Windows/macOS arrangement, but it does not add ChromeOS Flex to Boot Camp or make Flex dual boot officially supported. Do not substitute Boot Camp steps, Windows partitions, or Apple’s startup controls for Google’s ChromeOS Flex support requirements.

Choose the path that matches your goal
You want to test Flex and keep your Mac
Use the USB live session. It preserves the internal macOS installation and lets you test the exact hardware. Expect limited storage and temporary operation. The only required purchase for this route is generally an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive, and its contents will be erased while creating the installer; some drives may not work.
You want Flex as the permanent system
Verify the model, complete an independent backup, create the installer on an 8 GB-or-larger USB, and proceed only when you accept that the internal drive will be replaced. Installation is a one-system migration, not a dual-boot setup.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

You need macOS and a second operating system available from startup
Do not install Flex expecting a supported boot menu. Keep the Mac’s current system and select a platform or virtualization method whose vendor explicitly documents coexistence with macOS. ChromeOS Flex’s official position remains that dual booting is unsupported.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I dual boot ChromeOS Flex with macOS?
No. Google’s ChromeOS Flex FAQ says dual booting is not supported on ChromeOS Flex devices. Partitioning the drive or changing bootloader settings would be an unofficial arrangement, not a supported installation.
Can I try ChromeOS Flex without erasing my Mac?
Yes. Create the ChromeOS Flex installer on an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive and start the Intel Mac with Option held to choose EFI Boot or ChromeOS Flex. Use the live environment without selecting installation; macOS remains on the internal drive.
Will installing ChromeOS Flex erase macOS?
Yes. Google says installation completely erases the target drive, including programs, settings, and personal files, and that erased files are not recoverable. Make and verify a separate backup first.
Does every Intel Mac support ChromeOS Flex?
No. Google guarantees functionality only for models on its certified-model list. Other Macs may boot but can have unguaranteed performance, stability, or hardware support, so check the exact model and test it from USB.

How large must the installer USB be?
Google requires at least 8 GB. Creating the installer erases the USB contents, and Google notes that some drives may not work, so keep important files elsewhere and try another drive if necessary.
Is the live USB suitable for daily use?
It is intended for temporary exploration and testing. Storage is limited, and USB performance may differ from an internal installation. It is best for checking hardware and compatibility before deciding whether to replace macOS.
Why does the Mac show EFI Boot instead of ChromeOS Flex?
Google’s Mac guidance lists both labels. EFI Boot can be the name of the ChromeOS Flex USB entry; it does not indicate that macOS and Flex are installed side by side.
What if the Mac stays black or takes a long time to start after installation?
Google documents this possibility and says the logic board may still seek the former OS X or macOS installation device. Follow current, model-specific Google troubleshooting guidance, and do not apply generic NVRAM or firmware steps blindly on older Macs.
Does ChromeOS Flex include Chromebook security features?
Not all of them. Google says ChromeOS Flex devices lack the Google security chip and ChromeOS verified boot, and some Chromebook hardware functions are unavailable or unsupported on third-party computers.
Can Boot Camp create a ChromeOS Flex dual boot?
Apple’s Boot Camp documentation covers Windows 10 and macOS on supported Intel Macs. It does not document ChromeOS Flex support, so Boot Camp should not be treated as a solution for a supported Flex/macOS dual boot.
The Bottom Line
ChromeOS Flex and macOS cannot be dual-booted through a Google-supported setup. Use an 8 GB-or-larger installer USB and the Mac’s Option startup key to test Flex while keeping macOS intact. Check the exact model against Google’s certified list, test the hardware in the live session, and install only after a verified backup and a clear decision to erase the internal drive.
