Fingerprint ridge patterns can support a statistical estimate of the sex category associated with a print, but an ordinary fingerprint cannot determine an individual’s sex with certainty. Research finds average differences in ridge density and ridge breadth between study groups, yet the groups overlap and reported accuracy depends on the population, digit, measurement, and statistical method.
What fingerprint features are measured?
Ridge density is the number of friction ridges within a defined area of skin. Researchers have also measured ridge breadth (the width of ridges), ridge counts, finger breadth, and fingertip area. Across the cited studies, women tended on average to have denser or finer ridges, while men tended on average to have broader ridges. These are group-level tendencies, not rules that identify an individual.

Because the distributions overlap, a measurement near a study’s threshold cannot by itself establish a person’s sex. The results also depend on which finger is examined and how the ridges are measured.

The percentages below are classification accuracies reported for specific samples and methods. They are not a pooled estimate, a guaranteed success rate on crime-scene prints, or the probability that any particular classification is correct.

| Study and sample | Feature and method | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Attia et al., 2012 study of 752 healthy Egyptian adults ages 20–30 (380 male, 372 female) | Ten digits photographed; ridge count, fingertip square area, and ridge density assessed | 82% best accuracy using the combined features; left-hand ridge density was the strongest single parameter in this sample. PubMed record |
| Mundorff, Bartelink, and Murad, 2014 study of 500 participants (250 male, 250 female) | Width of ten unobstructed parallel ridges measured | 83.2%–89.3% by digit; 83.9% for pooled right-hand samples and 86.2% for pooled left-hand samples. The authors also found that weight, stature, and, to a lesser degree, BMI correlated with ridge breadth and accounted for some overlap. PubMed record |
| Kanchan et al., 2015 study of 245 male and 246 female Punjabi participants from the Delhi region | Right index finger ridge density in five areas | 96.8% with discriminant function analysis and 97.4% with logistic regression in this sample. PubMed record |
| Nithin et al., 2011 study of 550 South Indian participants (275 men, 275 women) | Ridge density thresholds | Below 13 ridges per 25 mm² was more likely male and above 14 more likely female in that sample; these are study-specific presumptive thresholds, not universal cutoffs. PubMed record |
The highest percentage in this comparison comes from one defined population and one finger, not from a test of prints across all populations or real-world print conditions. The studies do not establish that their figures or thresholds transfer to every ancestry, age, digit, print quality, or latent-print setting.
Does this identify the person who left a print?
No. Estimating a likely sex category from broad ridge measurements is different from fingerprint identification. Identification compares friction-ridge detail to assess whether impressions may share a source. A morphology-based sex estimate neither identifies a person nor proves that a specific individual left the print.

- FIDO U2F certified, and FIDO2 WebAuthn compatible for expanded authentication options, including strong single-factor (passwordless), dual, multi-factor, and Tap-and-Go support across major browsers (for services leveraging the older FIDO U2F standard, instead of using biometric authentication, Tap-and-Go allows the user to simply place their finger on the VeriMark Desktop Fingerprint Key to enable a security token experience).
- Windows Hello certified (includes Windows Hello for Business) for seamless integration. Also compatible with additional Microsoft services including Office365, Microsoft Entra ID, Outlook, and many more. Windows ARM-based computers are currently not supported. The cited studies report statistical classification, not a validated stand-alone forensic conclusion. Any account of a result should name the population, measured feature, and method, and describe it as an estimate rather than proof.

Can laboratory analysis of residue provide different evidence?
A separate 2018 proof-of-principle study in Analytical Methods used fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) to target sequences on X and Y chromosomes in cells found in fingermark residue. The authors reported that they could establish male and female nucleated cells in the tested depositions, and that powder dusting and gelatin lifting did not prevent the method in their experiments. They also noted that fingermarks often contain too little recoverable DNA for successful DNA profiling. This is laboratory analysis of biological material, not a reading of visible ridge patterns, and the paper does not establish routine availability in casework. Analytical Methods paper

Can a consumer tool determine sex from a fingerprint?
The studies described here do not validate a consumer product as a reliable way to determine an individual’s sex from a fingerprint. A magnifier or image may make ridges easier to see, but visibility does not remove the overlap between groups or turn a statistical tendency into a certain individual result.
