For most backyard radio astronomers, no—not as a realistic or reliable project. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) last only milliseconds, and the instruments used to find them are purpose-built systems with substantial collecting area, broad frequency coverage, rapid sampling and dedicated signal processing. A small dish has been used to observe one unusually active, already-known repeater, but that is a special case, not evidence that ordinary home equipment can survey for FRBs.
Why FRBs are difficult to catch
An FRB is a short-lived radio signal, so a receiver must sample data quickly enough to preserve a burst that may last only milliseconds. For comparison, CHIME’s FRB backend operates at approximately 1 millisecond time resolution. A receiver that records too slowly can miss the event or smear its brief signal across time.

Speed is only one part of the challenge. A search instrument also needs useful frequency coverage, enough collecting area to detect faint signals, a wide view of the sky or a way to observe likely directions repeatedly, and software capable of processing a large stream of data for candidate bursts. Human-made radio transmissions can further obscure faint astronomical signals, particularly at a home site with nearby electronics and communications equipment.

| Instrument | What the published specifications show |
|---|---|
| CHIME | Four semi-cylindrical reflectors, each with 2,000 m² of collecting area; observes 400–800 MHz and uses an FRB backend with approximately 1 ms time resolution. NASA GCN’s CHIME mission page and the CHIME instrument page describe its design. |
| DSA-110 | A 110-dish array designed for FRB detection and localization. Its listed observing band is 1280–1530 MHz; the project page reports a search sensitivity of less than 1.7 Jy ms at 7.5 sigma and 1 ms. These figures describe the stated search conditions, not a backyard-equipment benchmark. See Caltech/IPAC’s DSA-110 page. |
These systems combine antennas, fast digital processing and search pipelines. The contrast is not simply “large dish versus small dish”: field of view, frequency band, receiver performance, observing strategy and data analysis all matter. The published figures above are not a like-for-like comparison with consumer or amateur equipment, and they do not establish a minimum dish size for detecting an FRB.
Does the small-dish exception change the answer?
It adds an important qualification, but not a practical route to backyard FRB discovery. An NRAO public proposal describes high-cadence observations of FRB 20240114A, an unusually active repeating source, using small European dishes. The proposal reports emission from that source up to 1.7 GHz. That frequency is specific to the reported source and proposal; it is not a general upper limit for FRBs. See NRAO’s proposal page.

Observing a known repeater that produces frequent bursts is different from pointing an ordinary telescope at an unknown part of the sky and finding a random, millisecond event. The proposal does not establish that standard consumer or amateur backyard equipment can detect FRBs reliably or conduct an effective survey.

Backyard radio astronomy can still be rewarding when the receiver is matched to the signal and frequency range. NASA’s Radio JOVE project describes observations of the Sun, Jupiter, lightning and the galactic radio background using spectrographs in the 16–24 MHz range. That is an educational amateur-radio-astronomy activity, not an FRB detector: its listed frequency range differs from CHIME’s 400–800 MHz band, and NASA does not present its equipment as a way to detect FRBs.

For faint-signal work, the observing location matters too. The U.S. National Science Foundation explains that Green Bank’s radio-quiet location helps protect astronomical observations from human-made radio transmissions. A backyard setup may face interference from local electronics and radio sources, another obstacle to detecting a brief, faint burst. See the NSF’s Green Bank Observatory overview.

Treat FRB detection as outside the realistic capabilities of ordinary backyard equipment. The small-dish observations of FRB 20240114A show that targeted work can be possible in exceptional circumstances, but they do not make a home FRB survey a practical project. For hands-on observing, choose an amateur program designed for accessible targets such as solar or Jupiter radio emissions, and use equipment built for that program’s frequency range.
