Sometimes—but the answer depends on the exact Acoustimass model. Bose systems do not all use the same wiring: some require the Acoustimass module between the receiver and speakers, while Bose names Acoustimass 3 and 5 stereo systems as compatible with its Music Amplifier. That does not mean a generic subwoofer can replace the module or that every Acoustimass system works with the same amplifier.
Why the exact Acoustimass model matters
“Acoustimass” covers different speaker systems and signal paths. Find the model and series printed on the module and speakers before changing connections or buying equipment. Then use the owner’s guide for that exact system; wiring advice for one series is not a safe substitute for another’s instructions.

The central question is not just whether another amp or sub has a matching connector. The amplifier must suit the system’s documented wiring, power and impedance requirements. A replacement subwoofer must also accept the signal the proposed equipment provides. The available Bose documentation does not establish a universal third-party subwoofer replacement for Acoustimass systems.

What the manuals say about connecting an amplifier
Acoustimass 5 Series V
Bose’s Acoustimass 5 Series V owner’s guide places the module between the receiver or amplifier and the cube speakers. Connect the receiver or amplifier to the module’s “INPUTS FROM AMP OR RECEIVER” terminals, then connect the module outputs to the speakers. Bose specifies a receiver or amplifier rated at 10–200 watts per channel with 4–8 ohms impedance for this system. These are specifications for Acoustimass 5 Series V, not a general rule for all Acoustimass products.

The guide warns that incorrect wiring can result in little or no bass and could damage the system. Preserve the +/− polarity shown in the manual.
Acoustimass 6 and 10 Series V
For these systems, Bose gives a different path: only the Acoustimass module connects to the receiver, and all speakers connect directly to the module. The Acoustimass 6 and 10 Series V owner’s guide warns not to connect the speakers directly to the receiver, citing possible damage and electric shock. Do not bypass the module based on instructions for another Acoustimass model.

Legacy Acoustimass Bass System
Bose’s legacy Acoustimass Bass System guide says that system should be used only with specified Bose speakers and does not recommend using it with non-Bose loudspeakers. Treat that restriction as applying to this product, rather than every system with Acoustimass in its name.

A subwoofer’s presence or a matching-looking output does not prove it can replace the Acoustimass module. Confirm from both devices’ manuals what signal the receiver or amplifier supplies and what the proposed sub accepts—such as speaker-level input, line-level/LFE input or a manufacturer-specific connection. Also check whether the original module must remain in the signal path for your model.

Bose describes the Music Amplifier’s 3.5 mm bass output for a Bose Bass Module 500 or 700, using a standard 3.5 mm stereo cable, with one wired bass module connected at a time. That statement documents a Bose-specific pairing; it does not establish compatibility with arbitrary third-party subs or authorize removing an Acoustimass module where the system manual requires it.
A named amplifier option, with a limited compatibility list
Bose’s Music Amplifier compatibility information lists Acoustimass 3 and Acoustimass 5 Stereo Speaker Systems among its compatible passive speakers. Bose says the amplifier can drive passive speakers rated at 4 ohms or higher; for two connected pairs, it recommends speakers rated at least 8 ohms.

This is a named compatibility statement for the listed Acoustimass 3 and 5 stereo systems, not a blanket endorsement for every Acoustimass home-theater system. Check the individual speaker system’s guide for its required signal path before connecting it. The compatibility listing also does not say that a third-party sub can replace an Acoustimass module.
Check compatibility before changing your setup
- Identify every component. Read the model and series on the module and speakers. Record both if the labels differ.
- Find the matching owner’s guide. Use Bose Support and follow that model’s wiring diagram rather than inferring the connections from another series.
- Check the amplifier’s electrical match. Compare its supported impedance and power guidance with the system’s manual. Wire the terminals with the stated polarity.
- Check the proposed sub’s input. Confirm its supported signal type in its own manual, then verify that the receiver or amplifier provides the corresponding output. Do not assume a generic sub will substitute for the Acoustimass module.
- Check an older module for recall status. Use Bose’s recall guidance and the product name and serial number before continuing to use an older unit.
Check recall status for older bass modules
Bose says certain bass modules manufactured before April 1, 2006, and sold with select Acoustimass, Lifestyle and Companion systems, are included in a voluntary recall because electrical components may fail and pose a fire hazard. The date is the stated manufacturing boundary for the recalled group, not proof that every older module is affected. Follow Bose’s bass module recall instructions to check the product name and serial number. For Acoustimass 6 III and 15 II systems, Bose specifies checking particular serial-number digits. If Bose confirms your module is included, stop using it, unplug it, and follow the return process on the recall page.
