To view gameplay on the laptop, route the console’s HDMI output through an external USB HDMI capture card, then open the card’s compatible software.
What you need
- An Xbox 360 with an HDMI output. If your console lacks one, identify its revision and available video outputs before choosing equipment; Xbox Support’s connection guide covers console-to-TV connections, though its page does not provide enough accessible detail to list every revision’s ports.
- An external USB HDMI capture card with an HDMI input and a USB connection supported by your laptop.
- An HDMI cable between the console and capture card. Check the selected card’s included accessories before buying a cable; Elgato says one is included with the HD60 S in its Xbox 360 setup guide.
- The capture card’s supported software, plus an optional TV or monitor if you want to play on a separate display.
How to connect the Xbox 360 to your laptop
- Connect an HDMI cable from the Xbox 360’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI In port.
- Connect the capture card to the laptop with its USB cable.
- Install and open the capture card’s supported software, then select the card as the video source. Elgato’s setup instructions direct users to download its capture software.
- Turn on the Xbox 360. The console’s video should appear in the capture software if the card, software and signal are compatible.
How to play on a TV while capturing
If the capture card has HDMI passthrough, connect the TV or monitor to the card’s HDMI Out port. This sends the console signal to a separate display while the card connects to the laptop over USB. Passthrough is optional; it is not needed just to view the capture software’s feed.

What to check if there is no picture
The laptop shows no video
Confirm that the console is connected to the capture card’s HDMI input—not directly to the laptop—and that the card is connected over USB. In the capture software, select the capture card as the source. Also check that your laptop’s operating system and USB connection are supported by the card.

The software shows video but the passthrough display does not
The TV or monitor may not support the Xbox 360’s current output resolution. Elgato notes that a display limited to 720p or 1080i may not show an initial 1080p signal; set the console to a resolution the display supports, following the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance.

The console or capture card has no matching port
Check the Xbox 360 revision and the capture card’s inputs before connecting anything. If your console does not have HDMI output, this HDMI setup does not apply directly; choose a capture device compatible with the console’s actual video output instead.
HDCP and capture limits
Elgato says its Game Capture HD can receive unprotected HDMI signals such as Xbox 360 output, but cannot display HDMI signals protected by HDCP. That establishes compatibility for the cited Xbox 360 gameplay setup, not capture of every kind of protected media. See Elgato’s explanation of unencrypted HDMI sources.

Choose the right kind of device
The essential device is an external USB HDMI capture card—not a basic HDMI-to-USB cable or an HDMI splitter. The signal path matters: console HDMI output goes into the card’s HDMI input, and the laptop receives the captured stream through USB. Elgato’s HD60 S is one example documented for this setup, but check current availability, operating-system support, USB requirements, software compatibility and included cables for whichever exact model you choose.
