Amazon’s official instructions require the Alexa app to set up an Echo Dot and connect it to Wi-Fi. Amazon does not document a supported first-time setup route that skips the app, whether you try using a computer or the Dot’s temporary setup connection. If you do not have a suitable phone, you can try another compatible mobile device with the app and authorized access to the Amazon account.
Can you set up an Echo Dot without the Alexa app?
Amazon’s setup instructions direct you to use the Alexa app on a mobile device. Its Echo Dot guidance says, “Use the Alexa app to set up your Echo Dot, or Echo Dot with clock.” The official instructions reviewed do not describe a browser-only or computer-based setup method, or a supported way to finish setup without the app. That is the limit of Amazon’s documented process; it does not establish that no unofficial workaround has ever worked.

The Dot’s setup mode or temporary Wi-Fi connection should not be mistaken for a complete app-free setup. Amazon’s published steps still direct you to finish in the Alexa app.

For the Echo Dot (5th Generation), Amazon lists the following prerequisites:
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- The Echo Dot and its power adapter
- An Amazon account
- An internet connection, plus the Wi-Fi network name and password
- A mobile device with the Alexa app available for that device
Amazon’s instructions establish app use on a mobile device, but do not confirm compatibility for every device or operating system. Check whether the Alexa app is available for the device you plan to use.
How to connect the Echo Dot using the Alexa app
- Plug in the Echo Dot with its power adapter.
- Open the Alexa app on a mobile device and sign in with the authorized Amazon account.
- Tap Devices, then tap +.
- Choose Add Device, then Amazon Echo.
- Select Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Pop and more, then follow the app’s instructions to complete setup.
Amazon’s general Echo Dot setup guidance likewise directs users to the Alexa app and the Devices > Add Device > Amazon Echo path.

If you do not have your own compatible phone
You can try using another compatible, internet-connected mobile device that has the Alexa app. Do this only with the Amazon account holder’s authorization, since setup uses that account. Check app availability on the borrowed device before starting; Amazon’s guidance does not guarantee support for every mobile device or operating system.

Network compatibility
Amazon says Echo devices connect to common home Wi-Fi networks using 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz and 802.11a/b/g/n standards. It says they cannot connect to ad-hoc or peer-to-peer networks.

If setup will not connect
Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking that the Alexa app is current, trying its listed Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps, and restarting the Alexa-enabled device. If those steps do not work, Amazon recommends resetting the device and trying setup with a phone hotspot. A reset may erase device settings, so follow the reset instructions for your specific Echo Dot generation rather than assuming the steps are the same across models.
A phone hotspot is a possible internet connection to try during Amazon’s documented app-based setup and troubleshooting process; Amazon does not present it as a substitute for the Alexa app.
