Can You Close Corsair iCUE? What Works Without It—and What Doesn’t

Usually, no—you do not need Corsair iCUE running all the time. A supported keyboard, mouse, headset, cooler, or other peripheral can retain selected lighting, performance, and assignment settings in onboard memory. Once those settings are saved to the device, ordinary operation can continue after you quit the app.

That exception is important: onboard memory is a smaller hardware feature set, not a complete copy of iCUE. Synchronized RGB scenes, sensor-linked behavior, software profiles, integrations, and some assignment types require iCUE to remain available in the background. Whether you should close it therefore depends on your exact model and the feature you use.

What iCUE does—and what “running” actually means

Corsair iCUE is desktop configuration and control software for supported Corsair gaming PCs and peripherals. It provides controls for lighting, performance, key assignments, audio, cooling, profiles, system monitoring, and compatible ecosystem integrations. Corsair describes the current software and download options on its official iCUE downloads page and in its iCUE overview.

There are three different questions hidden inside “Do I need to run iCUE?”

#1 Best Overall
Corsair K55 RGB PRO Membrane Wired Gaming Keyboard – Black
  • Dynamic RGB Backlighting: Light up your desktop with six onboard lighting effects, assign a color to each lighting zone, or program your own vibrant lighting effects across five RGB lighting zones with CORSAIR iCUE software.
  • Six Dedicated Macro Keys: Activate functions, shortcuts, or keypresses in just one stroke with six dedicated macro keys, easily set up through CORSAIR iCUE software, or use instant streaming commands through Elgato Stream Deck software.
  • Dust and Spill-Resistant Design: IP42-rated protection guards against accidents so your gameplay never has to stop.
  • Detachable Palm Rest: A soft rubber palm rest reduces stress on your hands so you can play longer in comfort, with a textured surface to keep your hands from slipping.
  • Dedicated Volume and Media Keys: Convenient control for media playback and fine-tuning volume on-the-fly without having to interrupt your game.
  • Do I need to install it? You need the application to configure iCUE features, create software profiles, and write supported settings to onboard memory. A device that is already configured can continue using its saved hardware state without the application open.
  • Does it need to stay open? Only for functions that are calculated or coordinated by the computer, rather than stored and executed by the peripheral itself.
  • Does a particular feature need it? This is model- and feature-dependent. Two Corsair devices can behave differently when the same application is closed.

Closing the window is not the same as uninstalling iCUE. You can leave it installed, quit it after configuring a device, and reopen it whenever you need software-controlled features or profile changes.

Software Mode versus Device Memory Mode

With iCUE active, a compatible device operates in software mode and can use resources supplied by the application. In Device Memory Mode—also called a hardware profile or saved hardware state—the device uses its own onboard storage. The available settings and number of memory slots vary by product.

Capability Software Mode with iCUE active Device Memory Mode or saved hardware state
Settings available Full iCUE controls for features supported by that model Device-specific subset; hardware options have limitations
Lighting Complex effects and synchronized scenes across compatible devices Selected effects saved locally; software-only behavior is unavailable
Sensors and monitoring Can use iCUE sensor information and system-linked behavior Sensor resources supplied by the application are not available
Key or button assignments Software assignment options available Saved assignments can persist, but some assignment types are unavailable
Portability Depends on iCUE and its profiles being present on the computer Saved settings can travel with supported hardware to another system

Corsair summarizes the limitation this way: “When in Device Memory Mode, a connected iCUE-compatible device will store custom lighting effects, key assignments, and cooling or performance settings locally to onboard storage, however, the selection of lighting effects, key assignment types, and other misc. settings will be limited.” The exact implementation is product-specific, so do not assume that a setting available on one keyboard or mouse exists on another.

What can remain active after you quit iCUE?

If your device has onboard memory, you can save a supported hardware profile before closing the application. The profile is executed by the device rather than by Windows or macOS. Corsair’s instructions for configuring hardware profiles and Device Memory Mode are available in its support guide.

Typical settings that can persist

  • A fixed or otherwise supported hardware lighting effect.
  • Selected key, button, or DPI assignments that the device firmware supports.
  • Some performance or cooling values, where the product exposes them as hardware settings.
  • One of the device’s onboard profile slots. The number of slots is not universal.

“Supported” is the operative word. A device without onboard storage cannot retain a profile after the software is closed, and a device with memory may still exclude particular effects or actions.

How to save and test a hardware profile

  1. Connect the peripheral and open iCUE.
  2. Select the device from the iCUE home screen.
  3. Open the device’s hardware-profile or Device Memory Mode controls. Corsair’s current labels can differ by device and iCUE version.
  4. Choose an available onboard slot, then configure only the lighting, assignments, and performance options shown for that hardware state.
  5. Save or write the profile to the device. If the product has a separate Hardware Lighting section, configure the effect there as well; Corsair documents that workflow in its hardware-lighting instructions.
  6. Quit iCUE completely, including its notification-area or menu-bar process, and test the keyboard, mouse, or other peripheral. A saved hardware profile should continue with the computer in that state.
  7. If a function disappears, reopen iCUE and check whether it was configured under a software profile instead of the hardware profile, or whether the action is listed as unavailable in Device Memory Mode.

Keep the original software profile as a backup. It may contain richer effects or assignments that cannot be represented in the device’s onboard memory.

Which features require iCUE to stay open?

Leave iCUE running when the computer must calculate, coordinate, or monitor something in real time.

Synchronized lighting

Lighting coordinated across multiple components is a software task. iCUE can synchronize compatible devices and apply scenes that depend on several products or changing computer events. A hardware profile can preserve a selected local effect, but it cannot reproduce every software-mode scene.

Sensor-linked behavior and monitoring

Temperature readings, system monitoring, and behavior that reacts to those readings rely on information collected by the application. If the function depends on a sensor resource from iCUE, closing the app removes that resource. A device’s own firmware-controlled setting is a different case and must be identified in the model’s documentation.

Software profiles and automatic switching

Profiles stored in iCUE can change when an application launches, a game is detected, or another computer condition is met. Those rules are not the same as an onboard profile. Without iCUE, the peripheral cannot receive a new software profile from the computer.

Advanced assignments and macros

Some key and button actions can be written to onboard memory, but Corsair warns that some hardware-assignment options are unavailable because they require iCUE running in the background. Its onboard key-assignment support article identifies this limitation. Do not assume that every macro, remap, layer, text action, or application-specific command will work after quitting the app.

External integrations

Integrations that exchange data with other applications, including streaming-related controls, are software features. A compatible external control surface can be useful for those workflows, but it is not required for ordinary keyboard or mouse operation and does not replace iCUE’s own hardware-memory capability.

Should you leave iCUE running? A use-case decision guide

Your goal Keep iCUE running? Reason
Use a keyboard or mouse with default behavior No, if the device works correctly without saved software settings Basic input does not require a live profile.
Use one fixed lighting effect saved to onboard memory Usually no The effect can be executed locally when the model supports hardware lighting.
Synchronize RGB across several devices Yes Coordination is supplied by software mode.
Change lighting or assignments automatically for each game Yes Automatic profile rules run in iCUE.
Use sensor-driven monitoring or reactions Yes The application supplies sensor information and processing.
Use a macro or assignment not offered in the hardware-profile editor Yes That action is software-only for the device.
Move a configured peripheral between computers No, for settings saved to onboard memory The hardware profile travels with the supported device; software profiles do not.

The “No” choices assume that you have tested the saved profile. If a feature matters for work or play, test it after a full quit rather than relying on how it looked while iCUE was open.

Troubleshooting: settings vanish when iCUE closes

The device returns to a default effect

First, check whether the model has onboard memory and whether you saved the effect to a hardware slot rather than only to an iCUE software profile. Then verify that the effect is listed under the device’s hardware-lighting controls. Complex software scenes may have no hardware equivalent.

A macro or remap stops working

Reopen iCUE and compare the assignment with the options available in the onboard editor. Corsair explicitly notes that some hardware key-assignment options require the background application. Replace the action with a supported onboard assignment if portability is more important than the advanced function.

Only one of several peripherals keeps its settings

Onboard memory belongs to each device. Saving a keyboard profile does not save a mouse, headset, cooler, or lighting controller profile. Configure and test each product separately, and check the memory-slot indicator for each one.

Lighting no longer synchronizes

That behavior normally belongs to software mode. Use a local hardware effect when you want iCUE closed, or keep the application running for synchronized scenes and computer-triggered changes.

The profile works on one computer but not another

Check whether you are testing the hardware profile or an iCUE software profile. Hardware settings stored on supported devices are portable; software profiles depend on iCUE being installed and configured on the second computer.

Do you need to install iCUE, and where is it supported?

Installation is necessary when you want to configure iCUE, create or edit profiles, update supported settings, or use software-only functions. It is not the same requirement as leaving the application open every day.

Corsair’s compatibility and installation requirements page lists Windows and macOS support and identifies 1.5 GB of disk space as an installation requirement. That figure describes space needed to install the software; it is not a measurement of runtime CPU or memory use. The page was updated April 17, 2024, so verify the current requirements before installing a newer release.

No reliable official figure establishes a universal CPU, RAM, or performance penalty while iCUE runs. System impact depends on the release, enabled modules, connected hardware, and the computer, so avoid treating an internet-wide “iCUE uses X resources” number as a specification.

What changes if you try iCUE Apps beta?

iCUE Apps is a separate beta product, not simply a routine name change for iCUE 5. Corsair says it can be installed on the same computer as iCUE 5 when iCUE 5.48 or newer is present, but the two applications cannot run simultaneously. Corsair also states that onboard profiles remain untouched, while software-based profiles are not directly supported in iCUE Apps.

Read the official iCUE Apps beta page before switching. Beta compatibility and supported hardware can change, and a compatibility checker may not provide a result for every product. Confirm the exact device model rather than assuming that an iCUE 5-compatible peripheral is automatically supported by the beta application.

Choosing hardware if you want to run without iCUE

If a no-background-software setup is a priority, look for a Corsair keyboard or mouse whose current specifications explicitly mention onboard memory, hardware profiles, or Device Memory Mode. Validate the exact model’s support page and the particular features you need. “Has onboard memory” does not mean “stores every iCUE feature.”

You do not need to buy a new peripheral merely to close iCUE. Existing hardware may already support the settings you want; configure a hardware slot and test it first. Conversely, buying a model with memory will not make synchronized lighting, sensor dashboards, or unsupported macros work offline.

Streamers may choose a compatible Elgato Stream Deck integration for additional controls, but that is an optional workflow choice. It is not required to run iCUE, preserve an onboard profile, or use a Corsair keyboard or mouse in its ordinary mode.
