Usually, you cannot switch a parcel to a competing courier after it has been dispatched. Once the original carrier has scanned the package, its shipping label, tracking record and physical handling are tied to that carrier’s network. You may still be able to change where or when it is delivered—such as redirecting it, holding it for pickup, correcting an address or returning it to the sender—but those services normally stay within the original courier.
The practical route is to identify the carrier from the tracking number, open its delivery-management page immediately and request an eligible change. If the recipient controls are missing, the seller or shipping account holder may need to submit an intercept. Options can disappear once the parcel is out for delivery, so timing matters.

Why a courier switch is normally impossible after dispatch
A courier is not just the driver bringing a box to your door. The shipping label identifies the carrier’s network, service level, billing account, routing data and handling instructions. Scans at depots and vehicles are planned around that label. A competing courier generally has no authorization, manifest entry or payment arrangement for the parcel, so it cannot simply accept the package midway through the journey.
That is why a request such as “send this UPS parcel with DHL instead” is normally treated as a request to change the delivery arrangement, not to change the carrier. The original courier can sometimes alter the destination or timing in its own network. It usually cannot replace the label with another company’s label while the shipment is moving.

A merchant may be able to arrange a new shipment with a different courier, but that is a separate transaction. The original parcel would usually need to be returned, intercepted or delivered before a replacement is sent. Ask the seller about that option rather than assuming a carrier change can be applied to the existing tracking number.

Eligibility depends on the shipment status, destination, package contents, sender settings and the carrier’s service rules. Some changes carry a fee, require identity verification or create a new delivery estimate. A request is not the same as a guarantee that the parcel can be physically redirected.
Carrier-by-carrier options
UPS: change the delivery arrangement, not the carrier
For a package coming to you, UPS may provide a delivery-change request through UPS My Choice or a one-time guest flow. Depending on the shipment, the available choices can include rerouting to another location or changing the delivery date. Open the tracking record and look for Delivery Options or the equivalent delivery-management control.

If that control is not shown, UPS says the shipper may have restricted changes or the contents may be ineligible. The absence of a button therefore does not mean the tracking page is broken; it can be an intentional restriction attached to the shipment.

If you sent the package, UPS Delivery Intercept must be requested before delivery. Eligible outcomes can include returning the parcel to you, redirecting it to another address, rescheduling it for a future date or holding it for pickup. A fee may apply, and UPS charges it when the request is completed. Delivery Intercept changes the handling of the UPS shipment; it does not transfer the parcel to another courier.
FedEx: address changes and rerouting are conditional
FedEx may honor an address-change request when the sender has not restricted changes, the new address is not in another country and the shipment has not already been delivered. Other restrictions and fees can apply. Use FedEx tracking or Delivery Manager to check for address correction, rerouting to a retail location, delivery instructions, vacation holds or return-to-sender choices.
FedEx expressly warns: “Please note that rerouting is not a guaranteed service, as we are unable to physically change the original shipping label attached to the shipment.” That limitation explains both the uncertainty and the lack of a courier switch: the original label remains attached, so FedEx is still responsible for the movement.

DHL Express: date changes and collection points
DHL Express On Demand Delivery can offer a different delivery date and collection from a nearby DHL Express Service Point or Locker. Those choices let you control timing or pickup location while DHL continues to carry the shipment.
The listed DHL Express options do not provide a mechanism for replacing DHL with a competing courier after dispatch. If you need another carrier because of a service-area, access or timing problem, ask the seller whether it can arrange a separate replacement shipment; do not expect the existing DHL tracking number to migrate.
Recipient or sender: who can request the change?

Even when a recipient can submit a request, the carrier may still require the shipper’s approval, reject the destination, or apply a charge. Save the confirmation number and any revised delivery estimate after submitting a change.

Step-by-step: try to reroute, hold or reschedule a shipment
- Read the tracking number and identify the carrier. Use the carrier named in the order confirmation or the tracking page. If a marketplace shows a logistics intermediary, open the detailed scan record to find the company actually holding the parcel.
- Open the carrier’s official tracking page. Enter the tracking number and select the delivery-management control. Labels vary: look for Change My Delivery, Manage Delivery, Delivery Options, reroute, address correction, hold, pickup or reschedule.
- Check the available destinations. Read whether the option means a new street address, a carrier facility, a retail location, a Service Point, a Locker or a pickup hold. A nearby pickup point is often easier to approve than a completely different address.
- Review the eligibility message. Confirm that the package has not been delivered, the new address is allowed, the sender has not blocked changes and the contents are not excluded. FedEx, for example, does not accept a new address in another country under its stated conditions.
- Confirm cost and timing before submitting. Note any fee, identity check, signature requirement and revised delivery date. A reroute can add handling time, and a request can be refused even after you enter the details.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the request number, screenshot or email. Continue watching scans because a pending request is not proof that the driver has received the new instruction.
- If no option appears, contact the seller immediately. Ask the shipper to submit an intercept or authorize a change. Provide the tracking number, the requested outcome and the latest scan status so the account holder can act without delay.
Timing: what changes when the status advances?
Label created or shipment information received
At this stage, the parcel may not yet be in the carrier’s physical network. Contact the seller quickly if the address or courier is wrong. The seller may still be able to void the label, correct the order or choose a different service before handoff.

In transit between facilities
This is the normal window for checking reroute, hold and date-change controls. The carrier can evaluate the request against its scans and service rules, but approval is still conditional.
At a local facility
Pickup-point or hold choices may be practical, while a cross-country address change can be restricted. Submit the request before the parcel is loaded for the final delivery route.
Out for delivery
Expect fewer choices once a driver has the parcel. An online change may close, arrive too late for that route or be replaced by a missed-delivery workflow. Call the carrier or seller promptly and ask whether the parcel can be held, attempted again on another day or returned to the sender.

Standard delivery-management tools are generally finished. If the package went to the wrong address, was refused or is damaged, contact the seller and carrier with the tracking record and delivery details. The remedy may be a return, claim or replacement rather than a reroute.

Restrictions, fees and risks to check
- Sender controls: A merchant or account holder can disable recipient changes, and some services require the sender to request the intercept.
- Package contents: Hazardous, regulated, perishable, high-value or otherwise special items may be excluded from rerouting or pickup changes.
- Destination rules: A new address may need to remain in the same country or service area. FedEx specifically states that its eligible address change cannot be to another country.
- Identity and signature: The carrier may require an account login, one-time verification, identification at pickup or a signature at the revised destination.
- Fees: Intercepts and some address changes can cost money. Check whether the charge applies when you submit the request or only when the carrier completes it; UPS states that its Delivery Intercept fee is charged if the request is completed.
- No guarantee: A submitted request can be refused or arrive too late. FedEx describes rerouting as not guaranteed because the original label cannot be physically changed.
- Delivery estimate: A hold or reroute can add time. Do not schedule a time-sensitive appointment around the original estimate until the carrier confirms the new one.
Common situations and the best response
“I chose the wrong courier at checkout.”
If the order has not been handed over, ask the seller to cancel the label and recreate the shipment. After dispatch, use the original carrier’s hold or reroute tools; a competing-courier request normally requires a new shipment arranged by the seller.
“The parcel is going to my old address.”
Open the carrier’s delivery-management page immediately. Request an eligible address correction or pickup hold. If the control is missing, contact the seller because sender restrictions may be the reason.
“I will be away when the driver arrives.”
Choose a future delivery date, vacation hold or pickup location where offered. A Service Point, Locker or retail-location hold keeps the original carrier responsible while removing the need for someone to answer the door.

“The parcel is already out for delivery.”
Try the carrier’s phone or live support channel at once, but prepare for a missed-delivery or return-to-sender process. The driver may not receive a last-minute online instruction.
“The seller says the courier can be changed.”
Ask whether the seller means a reroute within the existing network or a replacement shipment. Request the new tracking number if a second parcel is being sent; the original tracking number will not normally become a different courier’s label.
