Yes—MacBook Pro models introduced in 2016 or later can charge through USB-C, provided the charger or display supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD). The wattage you need depends on your model, and a lower-wattage USB-C PD source may charge more slowly. “USB” does not mean that any USB port or adapter will work: the relevant connection is USB-C with USB PD.
What “USB charging” means for a MacBook Pro
Apple says MacBook Pro models introduced in 2016 or later can charge through USB-C. Its compatibility condition is a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery. The connector’s shape alone does not establish that a source can charge your Mac. Apple also advises that third-party adapters and displays comply with applicable international and regional regulations and safety standards. Apple’s power-adapter guidance explains the requirement.

A USB-C or Thunderbolt display can supply power as well as a wall adapter. Check the power it actually delivers against your Mac’s model recommendation; the display’s connector type alone does not tell you its charging capacity.

To check an adapter’s wattage, inspect its certification label. You can also hold Option while choosing Apple menu > System Information, select Power, and read AC Charger Information. For model-specific advice, compare the Mac’s exact model with Apple’s adapter recommendations.
Will a lower-wattage USB-C charger work?
It can. Apple says a USB-C charging Mac can charge from a compatible adapter or display whose wattage is above or below the recommended rating. For the best charging experience, Apple recommends at least the minimum wattage listed for the model. If a source does not provide enough power, macOS may show “Slow Charger”; Apple recommends using a solution that delivers more power to charge more quickly. Apple’s laptop charging guidance also explains charging indicators and pauses.

So a lower-wattage USB-C PD adapter is a possible fallback, not an equivalent replacement for the model’s recommended adapter. Charging speed depends on the power delivered, and may be especially limited while the Mac is in use.

On MacBook Pro models with MagSafe 3, you can charge either through a USB-C/Thunderbolt port or through MagSafe 3. A USB-C charge cable connects the adapter to a USB-C port; a USB-C-to-MagSafe 3 cable connects it to the MagSafe port. Apple notes that the USB-C charge cable is sold separately. Its MacBook Pro guide describes the available charging connections.

The Mac charges through only one port at a time and uses the source providing the most power. Connecting a second adapter or charging display will not combine their output or increase charging speed. If using a display, check its delivered wattage just as you would for an adapter.
When MacBook Pro fast charging is supported
Fast charging is limited to particular model, adapter, and cable combinations; a USB-C connection by itself does not guarantee it. Apple’s guidance lists these combinations:

- 14-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2021 or later: a 96W or 140W USB-C adapter with either a USB-C-to-MagSafe 3 cable or a USB-C charge cable.
- 16-inch MacBook Pro introduced in 2021 or later: a 140W adapter with MagSafe 3. For 16-inch models introduced November 2023 or later, Apple also lists a 240W USB-C charge cable.
Apple reports that compatible configurations can charge to about 50 percent in around 30 minutes. That is an Apple test result, not a guaranteed time for an individual Mac: settings and environmental conditions affect charging, and actual results vary. See Apple’s fast-charge requirements and testing information for the listed combinations and test details.
If charging seems slow or stops
- “Slow Charger” appears: check that the adapter or display supports USB PD, then check its wattage against the guidance for your Mac. A compatible but lower-output source may charge more slowly.
- Charging pauses or stops below 100 percent: this does not by itself mean the adapter is faulty. Apple notes that Optimized Battery Charging can put charging on hold, and a charge limit can intentionally stop charging below full.
- You connected two sources: the Mac uses only one charging source at a time, choosing the one providing the most power; it does not add their wattages together.
- You expected fast charging: verify the exact model, adapter wattage, and cable against Apple’s listed fast-charge combinations. Ordinary USB-C PD charging may work without meeting those conditions.
For more on a slow-charger message, a charging pause, or a charge limit, see Apple’s laptop charging guidance.
