No—not as a viewer. YouTube’s current desktop help documentation does not describe a setting that switches the overall desktop interface to another layout, restores an old design, or applies a desktop theme. You can use the standard navigation, change recommendation inputs, and—if you own a channel—rearrange that channel’s Home tab. Those are different controls, not a viewer-facing layout selector.
The distinction matters because YouTube uses “layout” for more than one thing. A creator can customize the way visitors see the creator’s channel page in YouTube Studio, while a viewer cannot use that editor to change YouTube.com’s general Home, watch, Search, or subscription pages.

Is there a YouTube desktop layout setting?
YouTube’s desktop navigation guide documents Home, Search, the Guide, Subscriptions, History, and account settings. It does not list a control for switching the overall desktop interface between layouts. The practical answer is therefore no: there is no documented viewer setting for changing YouTube’s general desktop layout.
This also means there is no officially documented switch in that guide for “old YouTube,” a compact desktop mode, an alternate column arrangement, or a permanent viewer-selected theme. YouTube can change its interface as part of product updates, but the help documentation does not provide a user setting that reverses those changes.

What YouTube does let desktop viewers use
- Home: your personalized starting page.
- Search: a way to find videos, channels, playlists, and other content.
- Guide: the main navigation panel for moving around YouTube.
- Subscriptions: videos from channels you follow.
- History: your watched-video record and related controls.
- Account settings: controls for your account, history, and other preferences.
These are navigation and account features, not alternative desktop layouts. If your aim is to see different videos, the relevant controls are recommendation and history settings rather than display settings.
Do not confuse viewer layout with channel layout
YouTube’s separate channel-layout documentation is for creators organizing the Home tab of their own channel. It does not change the interface that a signed-in viewer sees across YouTube.
What a channel owner can customize
In YouTube Studio, a channel owner can use the channel’s Customization area and Home tab to organize content for visitors. The documented tools include:
- A channel trailer for people who have not subscribed.
- A featured video for returning subscribers or other selected viewers.
- Custom content sections that group and present videos or playlists.
- Reordering and managing those sections.
The documented limit is up to 12 custom sections on the channel Home tab. That limit applies to the creator’s channel presentation; it is not a limit on the number of desktop layouts available to viewers.

How to reach the creator editor
- Sign in to the Google account that owns or manages the channel.
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Open Customization, then choose the Home tab.
- Use the layout controls to add, remove, manage, or reorder the trailer, featured video, and content sections.
- Save or publish the changes when YouTube presents that option.
Those edits affect the public presentation of that one channel. They do not move YouTube’s global Guide, change the Home page columns, alter the watch-page arrangement, or give the channel owner control over another viewer’s account interface.
If you want different videos on Home, change recommendation inputs
Many requests to “change the layout” are really requests to change what appears on Home. YouTube says homepage recommendations primarily rely on watch history. Your viewing activity and other account signals influence which videos are surfaced, so changing history can change the content of Home without changing its visual structure.
Watch-history controls
YouTube says viewers can turn watch history off or delete it if they do not want recommendations based on that history. Because history is a major recommendation input, either action can change the videos shown to you. It does not, however, create a different desktop layout or restore an earlier interface.

- Use the account and history controls documented in YouTube’s desktop help pages.
- Choose whether to pause watch history, delete selected activity, or clear the history available for deletion.
- Return to Home and allow recommendations to update; the exact results depend on your remaining account activity and YouTube’s recommendation system.
Deleting or pausing history has a trade-off: recommendations that depend on that activity may become less tailored. If you want a different mix of videos rather than a different page design, this is the documented direction to investigate.

What history controls do not do
- They do not change the size or position of YouTube’s desktop panels.
- They do not add a compact or classic desktop theme.
- They do not alter how another person sees your channel.
- They do not guarantee a particular set of videos on Home.
YouTube’s experimental custom feed is a content option, not a layout theme
YouTube documents an experimental custom feed for YouTube Home. It is designed to let an eligible viewer maintain a private, personalized feed, but it changes which content is surfaced—not the overall desktop interface.
Eligibility and limits
The help page states that the experiment is available to users in the United States who have English selected. You must be signed in, have watch history and search history turned on, and have the device language set to English. Availability can change because the feature is experimental.
You can maintain one custom feed at a time. The feed is private to your account, so it does not redesign a channel for visitors and does not become a public Home-page template. YouTube also states that the custom-feed prompt expires after 30 days of inactivity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to use it when YouTube offers access
- Confirm that you meet the location, language, sign-in, and history requirements.
- Open YouTube Home on the eligible account and look for the custom-feed invitation or entry point described by YouTube.
- Follow the on-screen creation flow to define the feed; the available wording and controls may change while the experiment is running.
- Use the feed privately from that account, or return to the standard Home experience when you want YouTube’s normal recommendations.
- If the invitation is absent, do not assume a setting is missing: experimental availability is limited and may change without a universal desktop-layout switch.
Turning history off can affect ordinary recommendations, but it also conflicts with the custom-feed requirement that watch and search history be enabled. That is why the two approaches solve different problems: history controls reduce or redirect recommendation signals, while the experiment provides a separate content feed for eligible accounts.

What you can change versus what you cannot
| Option | What it changes | Who can use it | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Channel Home-tab customization in YouTube Studio | The arrangement of content on a creator’s own channel page | Channel owners and managers | Up to 12 custom sections; it does not change YouTube’s general viewer interface. |
| Watch-history controls | Recommendation signals and potentially the videos shown on Home | Signed-in viewers | Changes content personalization, not the page’s layout; pausing or deleting history can reduce recommendation signals based on that activity. |
| Experimental custom feed | The videos surfaced in a private custom feed | Eligible users in the United States with English selected | Requires sign-in, watch and search history enabled, and an English device language; one feed per account; the prompt expires after 30 days of inactivity. |
| Desktop navigation | Access to Home, Search, Guide, Subscriptions, History, and account settings | Desktop viewers | Provides navigation, not a selector for alternate overall layouts. |
Can you switch back to the old YouTube desktop layout?
There is no documented YouTube setting for reverting to an earlier desktop design. The official desktop guide does not describe a “classic layout” control, and the recommendation and channel-customization pages address different functions. If YouTube has changed spacing, menus, cards, or navigation in your account, the supported controls documented by YouTube do not include a general rollback switch.
Be careful when evaluating advice that calls a browser add-on, script, or hidden URL an official setting. Such tools are outside the documented YouTube controls, can stop working when YouTube changes its code, and may introduce privacy or account-security risks. The official help pages supplied for this question do not endorse a third-party method for restoring an old layout.

You want a less personalized Home page
Review watch-history controls. YouTube says turning off or deleting watch history can prevent recommendations from relying on that activity, although the resulting Home content is not guaranteed to follow a particular design or topic mix.

You want to see a creator’s videos arranged differently
That is a channel-owner request. The owner can edit the channel Home tab in YouTube Studio, add a trailer or featured video, and organize sections. A viewer cannot apply those edits to the creator’s channel.

You want a private stream built around your own interests
Check whether YouTube offers the experimental custom-feed feature on your account. Verify the United States and English requirements, keep watch and search history enabled, and remember that the feed is private, limited to one, and subject to the 30-day inactivity expiry for its prompt.
You want a different arrangement of YouTube’s menus or columns
No viewer-facing layout setting is documented. Use the Guide, Search, Subscriptions, History, and account controls that YouTube provides, but do not expect those navigation links to switch the entire desktop presentation.
A quick diagnostic checklist
- Only the videos changed: review watch history and recommendation controls.
- Your own channel page looks wrong: open YouTube Studio’s Customization and Home tab.
- You saw a custom-feed invitation: check its eligibility and inactivity conditions before relying on it.
- You want the previous global design: YouTube’s documented settings do not provide a rollback.
- You cannot find a menu: open the desktop Guide or account interface rather than searching for a layout selector that is not listed in the official guide.
Bottom line for desktop viewers
You cannot currently change YouTube’s overall desktop layout from a documented viewer setting. You can customize a channel you own, influence Home recommendations through watch-history controls, and—if eligible—use YouTube’s experimental private custom feed. Each option changes a different part of the experience, so none should be treated as a switch for the entire YouTube desktop interface.
