Can You Change Your PSN Region to Access Games Unavailable in the US? What Actually Works

No. Sony does not let you change the country or region on an existing PlayStation Network (PSN) account after it is created. The practical way to use another country’s PlayStation Store is to create a separate PSN account registered to that country, using accurate registration details. Keep your US account for its purchases, trophies, saves, subscriptions and account history.

Why your existing PSN region cannot be changed

PlayStation Support states: “Once created, your country/region can’t be changed.” Sony’s US Terms of Service say the same thing in contractual language: “Once your account is created, you will not be able to change the country or region code associated with your account.” There is no settings switch, support request or console option that migrates a US account to Japan, Europe or another storefront.

The region is selected during account creation and affects the storefront, billing rules, voucher redemption and availability of digital content. Changing the console’s physical location, system language or time zone does not change the account’s country.

The supported way to use another country’s storefront

Create a second PSN account with the target country selected during registration. For example, someone who keeps a US account can create a separate account for a Japanese or European storefront when a particular title is sold there but not in the US store.

This is a second account, not a conversion of the original one. Your US purchases remain attached to the US account, while purchases made through the regional account remain attached to that regional account.

How to create and use a regional PSN account

1. Keep the US account unchanged. Do not delete it or attempt to alter its country. Its purchase history, trophies, subscriptions, saves and other account records stay associated with that account.
2. Start a new PSN account. Use the PlayStation account sign-up flow and select the country or region whose storefront you intend to use. The selected country cannot later be changed, so check it before completing registration.
3. Enter accurate information. Sony’s terms require account information to be accurate. Using false information can lead to suspension, termination or other restrictions under those terms. A regional account should therefore be created only when you can comply with the information and payment requirements for that country.
4. Sign in to the regional account on your console. The account can be added alongside your US account. Switching users lets you open the corresponding storefront, subject to Sony’s account and transaction rules.
5. Arrange an accepted payment method. Use a payment method or PlayStation Store voucher accepted in the account’s country. A card issued or billed in another country may be rejected when its details do not match the account’s billing area.
6. Buy the title from the matching storefront. Sony’s purchase documentation says you cannot purchase or download items from a country or region other than the one selected when the account was created. The purchase is therefore made through the regional account, not by changing the US account.
7. Record which account owns the game. Keep the regional account’s sign-in information available. The account that completes the purchase is the account to which the purchase is tied.

What happens to your existing US library and account history?

Nothing moves between accounts. The US account keeps its existing digital library, purchase records, trophies, saves, subscriptions and other history. The regional account starts its own account history and owns the items bought through its storefront.

This separation is the main convenience trade-off. You preserve continuity by continuing to use the US account for US purchases, but you must remember which account bought a particular game and sign in to that account when managing its ownership, downloads or transactions.

Why payment cards and vouchers often fail across regions

Sony ties transaction eligibility and billing information to the account’s country or area. A credit card can be declined when the card’s billing details do not match the selected storefront, even if the card works normally for other online purchases.

Voucher codes are region-sensitive as well. PlayStation Support says: “Voucher codes and your account’s country/region must match to be activated successfully.” A code purchased for one country should not be expected to redeem on an account registered to another.

Using a PlayStation Store gift card

A PlayStation Store gift card for the target country can be an option when that country’s payment methods are otherwise unavailable. Verify the specific marketplace listing, currency and redemption region before buying. The voucher must match the country selected on the regional PSN account; a US code will not automatically fund a Japanese or European account.

When a card is rejected

• Confirm that the card or voucher is issued for the same country as the PSN account.
• Check that the billing information entered for the account matches the payment provider’s requirements.
• Do not repeatedly submit mismatched card details; use an accepted payment method for the account’s country instead.
• If a voucher fails, verify its country, currency and activation status with the seller before trying another code.

Will an imported PS5 or PS4 game work with US DLC?

DLC compatibility depends on the country or region of both the base game and the add-on. PlayStation Support warns: “An add-on can’t be used with a game on disc if its country/region doesn’t match with the country/region of the game on disc.”

That makes a foreign physical edition paired with US DLC a common compatibility risk. A Japanese disc, for example, may not recognize an add-on downloaded from the US store. The safest arrangement is to use DLC from the same regional storefront as the disc’s licensed edition.

Before buying an imported disc

• Identify the disc’s licensed country or region, not merely the country where the seller is located.
• Check which storefront sells the matching add-ons and season passes.
• Use a PSN account registered to that storefront when purchasing region-matched DLC.
• Do not assume that identical game titles have interchangeable add-ons across stores.

Digital base games and add-ons should likewise be planned as a matched storefront purchase. Buying the base game through one regional account and an add-on through another can leave the add-on unavailable to the game.

Can a Japanese or European PSN account be created?

Yes, a separate account can be created with Japan, a European country or another available country selected at registration. The account remains tied to that selection permanently, just like the original US account.

The important distinction is between creating a legitimate second account for a chosen storefront and entering inaccurate details merely to bypass a restriction. Sony’s terms require accurate information and reserve enforcement rights when false information is used. Make sure you understand and can satisfy the target country’s registration and payment requirements before opening the account.

Does a VPN change PSN eligibility?

The official support and terms pages do not establish that a VPN changes PSN eligibility or provide a VPN as a supported region-change method. A VPN should therefore not be presented as an official way to bypass country restrictions. The account’s selected country, payment eligibility and voucher rules remain the controlling factors described by Sony.

Choosing between the US account and a regional account

Common situations and the correct response

“The game is missing from the US PlayStation Store.”

Check whether it is sold in another country’s storefront. If it is, create a separate account registered to that country, fund it with an accepted method and purchase the title there. Do not try to convert the US account.

“My foreign voucher code will not redeem.”

Confirm that the voucher’s country matches the PSN account’s country. Sony explicitly requires that match for successful activation. A code from another region is not a workaround for the account’s fixed country.

“My credit card works everywhere except this store.”

The card or billing information may not meet the target account’s country requirements. Use a payment method accepted in that country, or a correctly matched PlayStation Store voucher.

“The imported disc runs, but its DLC is unavailable.”

Check the disc’s licensed country or region and compare it with the add-on’s storefront. The base game and DLC need matching regional licensing; US DLC is not guaranteed to work with a foreign disc.

“I want all my trophies and purchases on one account.”

Keep buying and playing through the US account where possible. A regional account preserves access to a different storefront but necessarily creates a separate ownership and account-history path.

• Confirm that the title is genuinely unavailable in the US store and is offered in the target store.
• Decide which account will own the game before paying.
• Verify the target account’s country; it cannot be changed after creation.

You cannot change the region of an existing US PSN account.
