Yes. In Baldur’s Gate 3, a Dark Urge character can change class and rebuild their abilities through Withers, and can edit many cosmetic settings at the Magic Mirror in camp. These are separate systems: the mirror changes presentation, while Withers changes the mechanical build. Neither option changes the Dark Urge origin or its story.
What you can change
The Dark Urge is eligible for both of the game’s relevant post-creation customization systems. Use the Magic Mirror in camp for cosmetic and identity-presentation settings, and speak with Withers for a class or build respec. You can use the mirror repeatedly; Larian Studios describes it as allowing appearance changes “whenever you’d like, however many times you’d like.”

A respec does not edit your character’s face or body. It restarts the character’s mechanical build from Level 1, letting you make new choices for starting proficiencies, attributes, spells and cantrips. Appearance editing does not alter class, ability scores or spells. Treat the two options as independent: use one, the other, or both.

The Magic Mirror is a camp-based interface introduced in Larian’s Patch 3 announcement on September 22, 2023. The Dark Urge can use it after the game has begun, rather than being locked to the selections made during character creation.

Settings the mirror can edit
- General appearance settings offered by the current character-creation interface.
- Voice.
- Pronouns.
- Genitals (described by Larian as “nether regions”).
The exact collection of sliders and selections can vary with the character’s original choices and the game build. Larian’s official description establishes the categories above but does not promise an exhaustive list of every visual control. If a particular control is absent, that is a restriction of the available interface rather than evidence that the Dark Urge is ineligible.
What the mirror cannot edit
- Race or subrace.
- Body type.
Those fields remain fixed after character creation. Choosing the mirror will not turn a drow into a tiefling, change a subrace, or switch between the game’s body-type options. If your desired change depends on one of those fields, you would need a new character rather than a cosmetic edit.
How to use the mirror
- Travel to your camp.
- Locate the Magic Mirror and interact with it.
- Make the appearance, voice, pronoun or genital changes you want in the character-customization screen.
- Use the screen’s confirmation control to finish the update before leaving the interface.
Do not save while an edit is still awaiting confirmation. Patch 6 notes specify that changes still being edited are not saved if you save the game before confirming the update. Complete the edit, confirm it, and then make a new save if you want to protect the result.

Withers: changing class and rebuilding the Dark Urge
Withers provides the separate respec service. Larian’s Community Update #21 describes respec as restarting a build from Level 1 with new starting proficiencies, attributes, spells and cantrips. In practical terms, this lets you replace the Dark Urge’s class and reconstruct the character’s level-by-level choices instead of continuing with the original build.
What a respec changes
- The character’s class selection and the build choices made as levels are reassigned.
- Starting proficiencies associated with the new class.
- Attributes selected during the rebuilt progression.
- Spells and cantrips selected during the rebuilt progression.
Because the process begins at Level 1, you will need to make the progression choices again until the character reaches their previous level. The respec concerns mechanics; it does not rewrite the Dark Urge’s origin, replace the character’s narrative identity, or remove story events already triggered.
How to respec with Withers
- Go to your camp and speak with Withers.
- Choose the dialogue option that opens his respec service.
- Select a new class and rebuild the character from Level 1, choosing the proficiencies, attributes, spells and cantrips appropriate to that build.
- Confirm the respec, then review the character sheet and spellbook before returning to play.
The cited official material explains what the service does but does not establish a universal fee in the current game. Do not assume a particular gold price from an older guide or from another playthrough; the evidence for this question does not provide one.

Magic Mirror versus Withers

The distinction matters when planning a playthrough. If you only dislike a hairstyle, voice or pronoun selection, use the mirror and leave the build untouched. If you want to turn a rogue into a wizard, change ability priorities, or select a different spell progression, use Withers. If you want both, perform the appearance edit and the respec as separate actions.

Dark Urge-specific restrictions and confirmations
The Dark Urge is a supported mirror character
Larian’s Patch 3 announcement lists exclusions for the Magic Mirror: Origin characters, hirelings and full illithids cannot use it. The Dark Urge is eligible, so those exclusions should not be interpreted as a ban on the Dark Urge. A Dark Urge run can therefore use the mirror in camp after character creation.
A Patch 7 fix confirms the intended use
Larian’s Patch 7 notes describe a fix for Dark Urge characters being renamed after using the Magic Mirror. That was a bug fix for an intended feature, not a removal of Dark Urge customization. If you saw older reports about a name changing unexpectedly, update to a build containing the fix before judging the mirror’s behavior.

Cosmetic editing does not erase plot-driven changes
The mirror is a customization tool, not a way to roll back every physical event in the story. The community-maintained bg3.wiki notes that some plot-driven physical changes cannot be undone through the mirror. If an appearance change is imposed by an event, the mirror may not restore the original state even though ordinary cosmetic settings remain editable.

- Decide whether the problem is visual or mechanical. Visual, voice, pronoun and genital settings belong at the mirror; class, attributes, proficiencies, spells and cantrips belong with Withers.
- Check the locked fields first. If the goal is a different race, subrace or body type, stop before spending time in the mirror: those fields cannot be changed after creation.
- Make a manual save before editing. This gives you a fallback if you dislike the result or encounter an unexpected interface problem.
- Confirm the mirror edit before saving again. Patch 6 specifically warns that unconfirmed edits are not saved when the player saves during the update.
- Review the rebuilt character after a respec. Since the build starts at Level 1, check the character sheet, prepared spells, cantrips and proficiencies before entering a difficult fight.
Common questions and failure cases
Why can’t I find a race or body-type option?
Those controls are intentionally locked after character creation. The mirror supports appearance, voice, pronouns and genitals, but not race, subrace or body type. This is a feature limitation, not a problem specific to your save.

Will a class respec change the Dark Urge’s personality or quests?
No. Withers changes the character’s build. The Dark Urge origin, dialogue identity and story progression remain separate from class selection.
Can I use the mirror more than once?
Yes. Larian states that the mirror can be used repeatedly. You still need to confirm each edit, and the Patch 6 save warning applies every time you leave an update unconfirmed.
Why did an old guide say the Dark Urge cannot use the mirror?
The Magic Mirror was added in Patch 3, and later patch notes addressed a Dark Urge-specific rename bug. Advice written before those updates may describe the game as it existed before the feature or before the fix. The supported post-Patch 3 behavior is that the Dark Urge can use the mirror, while the listed exclusions remain Origin characters, hirelings and full illithids.
Can the mirror undo a story-caused transformation?
Not necessarily. Ordinary customization remains available, but some plot-driven physical changes are reported as non-reversible through the mirror. Treat those changes as story state rather than ordinary character-creation settings.
