Google Photos’ current Android help says you cannot speed up or slow down an Animation. Although the title points to a possible change, Google’s official sources reviewed do not confirm that new controls are coming. For now, an Animation remains a slideshow made from selected photos and videos.
Can you change an Animation’s speed in Google Photos?
No. Google Photos Help states: “You can’t speed up or slow down your animation.” The guidance appears on Google’s Android instructions for creating animations. That is the current documented behavior; it does not establish whether Google is testing a future speed control.

The phrase “could soon” should therefore be treated as unconfirmed unless Google announces the change or a reliable report directly verifies it. The official materials described here do not specify a test, supported platforms, or release timing for new Animation controls.

On Android, Google’s documented steps are:
- Open Google Photos and tap Create.
- Choose Animation.
- Select the photos and videos you want to include.
- Tap Create.
The result is a slideshow made from the selected items. The help page documents creation but does not offer a speed adjustment for that slideshow.

Animation, Photo to video, and Highlight video are different tools
Google groups several creation options in the Photos app, but their inputs and outputs differ. A speed or editing control documented for one should not be assumed to apply to another.
| Tool | What you provide | What it creates or lets you edit |
|---|---|---|
| Animation | A selection of photos and videos | A slideshow. Google’s Android help says its speed cannot be increased or decreased. |
| Photo to video | One still photo | An AI-generated short video clip. Google described a six-second clip and initial prompts including “Subtle movements” and “I’m feeling lucky” in its 2025 feature announcement. |
| Highlight video | Selected people, places, themes, or dates | A music-backed video. Google’s computer help instructions describe changing music, reordering clips, and removing clips. |
Photo to video is not a way to alter the timing of a sequence-based Animation: it animates a single still image into a generated clip. Google’s announcement described initial availability rolling out in the United States on Android and iOS; availability can vary. Its later Create tab feature article discusses daily generation limits for Photo to video and Remix, with more generations for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Those details concern generative tools, not Animation speed controls.

What to do if you need a faster or slower result
Google Photos’ documented Animation workflow does not provide a speed setting. If the pace matters, make the slideshow with a video-editing tool that lets you set image duration or playback speed, then export the finished video. That requires a separate editing step; it is not a control currently documented for Google Photos Animations.

If you want to move or remove clips, Google documents those edits for Highlight videos, not Animations. Choose that feature only if its selected-moments format suits what you want to make.
