Usually not in your carry-on. TSA’s multi-tool rule prohibits multi-tools containing a knife of any length in carry-on bags, so an ordinary blade-equipped Leatherman should go in checked baggage. TSA lists multi-tools without blades as allowed in both carry-on and checked baggage. Even when an item appears eligible, the TSA officer at the checkpoint has the final decision.

The short answer: check a Leatherman with a knife

If your Leatherman has a knife blade, do not put it in your cabin bag or pocket. TSA’s Complete List (Alphabetical) — What Can I Bring? specifically says multi-tools with knives of any length are prohibited in carry-on baggage and should be packed in checked baggage.

That rule applies even when the knife is very short, folds into the handle, or is part of a compact keychain tool. Size alone does not turn a knife-equipped multi-tool into a carry-on item. For example, the compact Micra product page shows a multi-tool that includes a knife; its small dimensions do not override TSA’s specific multi-tool rule. See the manufacturer’s example at Leatherman Micra Keychain Multi-tool.

TSA does list two related categories that can travel in the cabin: multi-tools without blades, and multi-tools with scissors measuring less than four inches from the pivot point. Those allowances must be read carefully. A tool that contains a knife remains prohibited in carry-on baggage; the scissor allowance does not create an exception for a knife-equipped Leatherman.

What TSA allows in each baggage type

Tool configuration Carry-on Checked baggage Important qualification
Multi-tool with a knife blade Not allowed Allowed TSA says knives of any length in a multi-tool are prohibited in carry-on bags.
Multi-tool without blades Allowed Allowed The exact tool configuration still matters and may receive additional screening.
Multi-tool with scissors under four inches Listed as allowed Allowed The separate scissors rule measures from the pivot point; do not apply it to a tool that also has a knife.
General tool seven inches or shorter May be allowed Allowed This general length guidance does not override the specific ban on multi-tools containing knives.

The table reflects TSA’s published categories, not a guarantee that every model will pass. TSA says generally permitted items can receive additional screening or be refused when a security concern exists, and that “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.”

Why knife length and overall size do not change the answer

Travelers often assume a tiny blade is acceptable because some ordinary knives are evaluated by blade length. That is not the safe interpretation of TSA’s multi-tool entry. The wording is categorical: multi-tools with knives of any length are prohibited in carry-on bags.

Consequently, these features do not make a blade-equipped Leatherman suitable for your cabin bag:

  • A blade that is only a few centimeters long.
  • A folding blade that is locked inside the tool.
  • A tool marketed as a keychain, pocket, or miniature model.
  • A tool whose other functions are pliers, screwdrivers, files, or bottle openers.
  • A tool that is shorter than TSA’s general seven-inch tool threshold.

The specific multi-tool rule controls when it conflicts with a broader rule about tool length. Treat the presence of a knife blade as the deciding factor for carry-on planning.

How to pack a Leatherman in checked baggage

Checked baggage is the straightforward option for an ordinary Leatherman containing a knife. TSA allows these multi-tools in checked bags, but it also asks travelers to protect baggage handlers and inspectors from sharp edges.

  1. Close every implement. Fold the knife, scissors, saw, and other hinged tools fully into the handle.
  2. Use a sheath or secure wrapping. TSA says sharp objects in checked bags should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury.
  3. Place it where it cannot open or move freely. Put the sheathed tool inside a sturdy pocket, toiletry case, or other secured section of the suitcase rather than loose among clothing.
  4. Keep it accessible enough for inspection. Do not bury it in a way that requires an inspector to handle surrounding sharp objects to reach it.
  5. Confirm that the bag is actually checked. If you are unexpectedly required to gate-check a carry-on, make sure the multi-tool is inside that bag before it is taken.

These steps reduce handling risk; they do not change the carry-on prohibition. A sheath protects people and luggage but does not make a knife-equipped tool acceptable at the checkpoint.

When a bladeless multi-tool can go in your carry-on

TSA’s list identifies “Multi-tool without Blades” as allowed in both carry-on and checked baggage. This is the useful distinction for someone who needs a compact tool after landing but cannot check a bag.

Before relying on that category, inspect the exact model rather than its marketing name. Look for every component, including small secondary blades, package openers, or scissors that may be easy to overlook. A model described as bladeless by a seller may still contain a cutting edge that changes its classification.

A practical pre-flight check

  1. Identify the exact model. Record the model name and compare it with the manufacturer’s current tool list or product page.
  2. Inventory the implements. Confirm that there is no knife or other blade hidden in the handle or accessory module.
  3. Measure scissors correctly if present. TSA’s scissors standard measures less than four inches from the pivot point, not from the tip of a closed handle or the overall length of the tool.
  4. Review TSA’s list immediately before travel. Use the official What Can I Bring? page because checkpoint guidance and item entries can change.
  5. Allow for inspection. Keep the tool easy to remove and be prepared to show that it has no blade.

If any part of the configuration is unclear, checking the tool is the lower-risk choice. A bladeless label is not a promise that a particular model or accessory will be accepted.

The scissors rule and the common misreading

TSA’s multi-tool entry says scissors less than four inches may be carried on. Its separate scissors entry also describes carry-on scissors as less than four inches measured from the pivot point. That measurement is important: measure along the blade from the hinge or pivot, not the entire tool.

However, do not use the scissors allowance to justify carrying a Leatherman with a knife. The knife prohibition is more specific to multi-tools and says knives of any length are prohibited in carry-on bags. A tool can have short scissors and still be barred because it also has a knife blade.

If a tool has scissors but no knife, verify the pivot-point measurement and the complete configuration. If the tool has a knife, plan to check it regardless of scissor length.

  • Toolbox Simplified: Combines 19 tools, including pliers, wire cutters, knife, saw, hammer, can opener and more into a compact 4.5-inch size that weighs a mere 7.5 ounces to fit in your pocket or backpack

Why the general seven-inch tool rule is not a workaround

TSA’s general tool entry says tools seven inches or shorter may be allowed in carry-on baggage, while longer tools and power tools must be checked. That language is often cited as a reason to carry a small Leatherman, but it is not a blanket authorization.

When a tool is a multi-tool containing a knife, the specific multi-tool entry governs. The seven-inch guidance cannot override the explicit “knives of any length” prohibition. Use the general rule only for tools that do not fall under a more restrictive category.

What Leatherman itself recommends

In “How to Travel with your Leatherman,” published June 20, 2022, Leatherman says: “To play it safe, always fly with your Leatherman in checked baggage.” That is consistent with the safest approach for a blade-equipped model.

The same article says Leatherman considers certain products compliant with TSA carry-on requirements, including Tread, Tread LT, Tread Metric, Brewzer, Piranha 2, Style PS, Mako Ti, Grind, Jam, Thruster, Pump, Rail, Cam, and Rime. Leatherman’s customer-service page, FAQs — Leatherman Customer Service, repeats that model list.

Those statements are manufacturer guidance, not a TSA guarantee. A model’s tool configuration can change, an accessory can add a prohibited component, and TSA officers retain discretion at the checkpoint. Leatherman also cautions that airlines may have their own rules and that international laws vary. Treat any model list as a starting point for checking the exact item, not as a promise of acceptance.

Airline and international travel considerations

TSA rules apply to security screening in the United States, but they are not the only rules that can affect your trip. Airlines may impose their own baggage or cabin restrictions, and another country may classify knives and multi-tools differently.

For a domestic itinerary departing from the United States, the conservative plan is simple: put a knife-equipped Leatherman in checked baggage, wrapped or sheathed. For an international itinerary, check the departure airport’s security authority, every airline involved, and the destination and transit countries’ rules. A tool accepted when leaving the United States can still create a problem at a connecting airport or on the return journey.

Do not assume that a tool accepted on one flight will be accepted on another. Checkpoint officers evaluate the item presented, and the final decision is made at the security checkpoint.

What to do if the tool is discovered at the checkpoint

If you reach security with a blade-equipped Leatherman, do not argue that the blade is too short or that the tool is under seven inches. Those points do not address TSA’s specific multi-tool prohibition.

  • If time and airport procedures allow, return to the airline desk and place the tool in checked baggage.
  • If you cannot check it, ask the airline or airport staff whether it can be surrendered or otherwise handled under their procedure.
  • Do not attempt to conceal it in clothing, another bag, or a container; present it when asked.
  • For a bladeless tool, explain the configuration and allow the officer to inspect it.

The available remedy depends on the airport, airline, timing, and officer instructions. The safest way to avoid losing the tool is to decide its baggage location before entering the security line.

Decision guide before you leave home

Your tool Best baggage plan Why
Any Leatherman with a knife blade Checked baggage TSA specifically prohibits multi-tools with knives of any length in carry-on bags.
Bladeless multi-tool with no questionable accessories Carry-on may be possible TSA lists multi-tools without blades as allowed, subject to screening and officer discretion.
Multi-tool with scissors but no knife Verify and carry on only if it meets the measurement rule Scissors must be less than four inches from the pivot point; inspect the complete tool.
Unclear, modified, or newly configured model Check it Uncertainty about a blade or accessory creates avoidable checkpoint risk.

Save the official TSA page to your phone before departure, confirm the exact model, and make the baggage decision while you still have access to your suitcase. That small preparation step is more reliable than trying to interpret the tool at the checkpoint.
