Yes—but only in a stainless steel bottle or growler that its manufacturer specifically rates for carbonated beer and the pressure your carbonation method can produce. Stainless steel alone is no safety guarantee. Check the exact model’s pressure rating, closure, fill instructions and pressure-relief guidance before sealing beer inside.
What makes a stainless steel bottle safe for carbonated beer?
Carbonation creates pressure inside a sealed container. Use only a vessel documented for packaged carbonated beer, and confirm with its manufacturer that its pressure rating meets or exceeds the pressure expected in your beer. The Brewers Association’s growler guidance says to verify this rating with the container supplier.

A regular insulated bottle, retail growler, soda-maker bottle or other steel container is not automatically suitable. Do not improvise a sealed pressure vessel. Follow the vessel maker’s instructions for its closure, fill level, temperature, regulator and any pressure-relief feature.

Natural conditioning in the bottle
In bottle conditioning, fermentable sugar produces CO2 after the beer is sealed. The vessel must be suitable for the pressure this process can create, and both the sugar addition and remaining fermentation need to be controlled. The guidance cited here does not provide a complete homebrew priming-sugar method, so there is no safe universal dose to give without details such as batch volume, residual CO2 and fermentation status.

Force carbonation with CO2
Force carbonation introduces CO2 from a regulated gas source into a pressure-rated vessel. Pressure and beer temperature affect carbonation, so use the growler and regulator instructions rather than applying one generic PSI setting to every beer or bottle.
How should you fill and store a carbonated growler?
- Use the manufacturer’s marked fill line when one is provided. If there is no line, the Brewers Association recommends leaving 5% headspace.
- Keep filled growlers cold and dark. Do not let them warm up or freeze; the Brewers Association warns that warming, freezing or overfilling can cause failure.
- Use only the specified closure and follow any instructions for pressure relief, cleaning and maintenance.
The pressure effect can be substantial: the Brewers Association’s 2019 Draught Beer Quality Manual gives examples of 29 psi at 68°F and 52 psi at 90°F for a sealed growler filled to 99% with beer at 38°F containing 2.5 volumes of CO2. These are scenario-specific examples, not universal pressure ratings for bottles.

What to check when choosing a pressure-rated steel growler
Compare the exact model’s documentation rather than relying on material or appearance. Check:
- Maximum working pressure and intended carbonation range.
- Whether it has a pressure-relief feature and how that feature operates.
- Closure and regulator compatibility.
- Fill line or stated headspace.
- Cleaning access and whether seals can be replaced.
- Temperature, use and maintenance instructions.
Pressure-rated products exist. For example, GrowlerWerks describes its uKeg 64 as a vacuum-insulated stainless steel growler with a pressure-regulating cap. Craft Master describes its pressurized growler as 304 stainless steel and lists an integrated CO2 regulator cap, gauge, safety valve and pressure-release tap. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance tests; verify the current instructions and limits for the model you are considering.

Will a carbonation cap or SodaStream bottle work?
A carbonation cap can feed CO2 through a compatible bottle connection. Kegco describes using one with a gas-side ball-lock disconnect and recommends chilling the beverage to help CO2 dissolve. That does not establish that an arbitrary steel bottle has compatible threads or fittings—or that it is rated for pressure. Confirm all three before use: vessel rating, connection compatibility and the cap’s instructions.
A SodaStream metal carbonating bottle is a model-specific appliance accessory, not a general-purpose beer growler. SodaStream’s instructions concern adding water to a marked line, using compatible machine models, and not removing or using a damaged bottle during carbonation. They do not establish that the bottle is approved for beer.
