Cancel a recurring World of Warcraft subscription in Battle.net before its next renewal. Open Games & Subscriptions, select Manage beside the correct World of Warcraft license, choose Cancel Subscription, and finish the prompts. Cancellation stops the next automatic renewal, but your account normally remains playable until the game time you already purchased expires.
If you are using the Modern WoW free trial, there is no recurring subscription charge for the trial itself. The current trial lets you download and play Modern WoW through level 20 without a subscription. A charge becomes a concern only when you separately start a recurring subscription or buy another form of game time.

What “cancel forever” means for a WoW subscription
Canceling a subscription means turning off its automatic renewal. It does not delete your Battle.net account, erase characters, or immediately remove paid game time. Blizzard says the account stays playable until the current game time expires; after that, it becomes inactive unless you add more time.
The cancellation remains in effect until you deliberately subscribe again. You can therefore cancel once and leave the account inactive for as long as you want. “Forever” is not a separate setting, however: it is simply a subscription that will not renew again unless you restart it.

- World of Warcraft Game
- Includes Expansion Packs: The Burnings Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, and Mists of Pandaria
- 30 days of free game time included
- Includes levels 1 through 90
- Subscription, Internet connection, and Battle.net registration required
Do not confuse this action with uninstalling the game, removing a payment card, or closing a Battle.net account. None of those actions is the normal way to stop a recurring WoW renewal, and deleting a payment method does not reliably reverse a charge that has already been submitted.
How to stop the next World of Warcraft charge
Use the Battle.net account that owns the subscription. If you have more than one account, checking the wrong login is the most common reason the subscription or cancellation control appears to be missing.
- Sign in to Battle.net. Verify the account email or account identity before changing anything.
- Open Games & Subscriptions. This page lists the game licenses and billing arrangements attached to the signed-in account.
- Find the relevant World of Warcraft license and select Manage. If several WoW accounts are listed, match the one you actually play and the one whose renewal you want to stop.
- Choose Cancel Subscription. Follow each confirmation prompt rather than closing the page after the first click.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the confirmation email or a screenshot, then revisit the subscription page or transaction history to check that the recurring plan is no longer active.
Cancel before the next renewal is initiated. Blizzard’s billing system may begin processing a renewal before the date you notice on a bank statement, so do not wait until the last possible minute if you already know you will not continue.

If “Cancel Subscription” is not shown
Blizzard’s support instructions identify two normal explanations: the signed-in account has no active recurring subscription, or the subscription was already canceled. Check that you are using the correct Battle.net login and the correct WoW license. A prepaid game card or digital game-time purchase also will not show a recurring cancellation control because it does not renew automatically.

What happens after you cancel
- Your current paid time remains available. Cancellation does not normally cut off access immediately. You can play until the expiration date of the game time already on the account.
- The next automatic renewal is stopped. The recurring plan should not purchase another period after the cancellation is recorded.
- The account becomes inactive when time runs out. You can add game time or start a new subscription later if you decide to return.
- Your account is not deleted. Characters, account history, and the Battle.net account itself are separate from the billing renewal setting.
Recurring plans can be set to renew monthly, every three months, every six months, or every twelve months. The period you selected determines when the next renewal would have occurred; canceling disables that future renewal rather than converting the remaining time into a different period.
Trial, recurring subscription, and prepaid game time compared
These three arrangements behave differently. Identifying which one you have tells you whether there is a renewal to cancel and what access remains after you take action.
| Access type | Payment method and billing | Playable content | Is cancellation needed? | Refund position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern WoW Free Trial | No recurring subscription is created by the trial itself. | Modern WoW can be downloaded and played through level 20 without a subscription. | No, because trial-only access does not renew automatically. | There is no subscription purchase to refund unless you separately bought game time or a subscription. |
| Recurring WoW subscription | A payment method is used for automatic renewal on the selected monthly, three-month, six-month, or twelve-month cycle. | Subscription-based WoW access, including the modes that require game time or a subscription. | Yes. Cancel in Battle.net before the next renewal. | Subscriptions are generally non-refundable, subject to Blizzard’s refund-review process and stated exceptions. |
| Prepaid game card or digital game time | Non-recurring time; it does not automatically purchase another period. | Access associated with the game time you added, including modes that require game time. | No recurring cancellation is needed. | Refund eligibility depends on the applicable purchase policy; it is not the recurring-subscription cancellation process. |
The free trial is specifically for Modern WoW. Blizzard’s support information says Classic versions and selected modes require game time or a subscription, so reaching the trial’s level-20 limit does not grant unlimited access to every WoW version.
If the renewal is pending or the charge has posted
A missed cancellation is not automatically refundable. Blizzard describes World of Warcraft subscriptions as generally non-refundable, but it provides a refund-review route for possible exceptions. Act quickly if a renewal is pending or has just appeared on your payment account.
- Confirm the billing status. Check Battle.net transaction history and your payment provider to determine whether the transaction is pending, completed, or only an authorization.
- Cancel the recurring subscription immediately. This prevents another renewal even if the current transaction cannot be stopped.
- Contact Blizzard Billing Support promptly. Explain that the renewal has entered processing or has just posted and provide the transaction details requested by support.
- Submit the refund-review request. A support review is required; do not treat the request as an automatic approval.
- Keep the account usable while it is reviewed. If you have already played during the newly purchased period, explain the timing accurately because the refund policy distinguishes unused subscription time.
Blizzard’s published refund wording states: “We’ll refund any unused World of Warcraft subscription within 14 days of the purchase.” That is a policy condition, not a guarantee that every request made within 14 days will be approved regardless of account activity or other exclusions.
The same wording says: “We won’t refund subscription time lost due to a suspension and/or permanent account closure.” A suspension or closure can therefore remove time without creating a refund entitlement. Blizzard also states that for permanent closures and suspensions longer than 15 days, it will cancel upcoming recurring subscriptions; that does not itself promise a refund for time already purchased.
Do not assume that removing a card, disputing a payment with your bank, or closing the Battle.net account reverses a completed charge. Those actions can create separate account or payment problems. Use Blizzard’s billing channel first and retain the transaction and cancellation confirmations.

A charge can still occur if you leave the trial and separately select a paid subscription, add paid game time, or use an account that already has a recurring subscription. Check Games & Subscriptions rather than relying on the game launcher alone: the launcher can show the game while the billing status is managed on the Battle.net account page.
How to verify that cancellation worked
Successful cancellation should leave you with evidence of the new billing state. Use this short verification checklist:
- The WoW license is the one you intended to change.
- The account page no longer presents an active recurring renewal for that license, or it shows a cancellation/expiration status.
- You received an on-screen or email confirmation after completing the prompts.
- The transaction history does not show a newly created renewal after the cancellation time.
- You know the date when the existing game time expires, because access continues until then.
If the status is unclear, sign out and back in, check the correct Battle.net account, and contact support with the confirmation you saved. Avoid creating a second subscription while trying to diagnose the first one; that can produce a separate renewal.

Common mistakes that do not cancel a subscription
Uninstalling WoW
Removing the game files changes only the installation on your computer. It does not change the subscription record or stop automatic billing.

Removing a payment method
Deleting a card or changing a payment account is not the cancellation command. It may cause a failed renewal, but it does not guarantee that a pending authorization will disappear, and it does not undo a completed purchase.
Closing the Battle.net account
Account closure is a much broader action than ending a subscription. It can affect access to games and account data and is not a substitute for canceling the recurring plan through Games & Subscriptions.
Assuming prepaid time renews
Prepaid cards and digital game time are non-recurring. If you bought one of those, there may be no subscription to cancel; the time simply runs until it expires.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe policy behind automatic renewal
Blizzard’s End User License Agreement explains that when you choose a recurring subscription, payments are processed automatically until you cancel the subscription or the account. That is why an active recurring plan must be canceled through the account billing controls rather than by stopping game use.
The agreement also says Blizzard is not generally required to refund amounts paid for use of the platform or digital purchases. The separate support wording for unused subscriptions within 14 days is the practical exception to check when a renewal has already occurred. Because eligibility can depend on use, suspension, closure, and the transaction date, submit the review instead of assuming either an automatic refund or an automatic denial.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each situation
- You have an active subscription and have not been charged yet: cancel the correct WoW license under Battle.net’s Games & Subscriptions page and save the confirmation.
- You are playing only the Modern WoW trial: the level-20 trial itself does not create a recurring subscription charge.
- You canceled today: keep playing until the paid game time expires; cancellation stops the next renewal, not the remaining time.
- You forgot and were charged: cancel now, contact Blizzard Billing Support, and submit the refund-review request. Blizzard generally does not refund subscriptions, but its stated policy covers unused subscription time purchased within 14 days, subject to exclusions.
- You cannot find the cancellation button: check the Battle.net login and WoW license; the account may have no active subscription or may already be canceled.
